If you’re a Richmonder, you might’ve already deciphered that the Sunny mentioned in this morning’s Reader Redesign is none other than local paint heroine Sunny Goode. Heck, even non-locals with a good memory might have picked up on it since Sunny’s name has popped up more than once on YHL, like when we house crashed this Domino-featured home that sported Sunny’s signature stenciled paint treatment on her floors:
Or when we dropped in on her store, Sunny’s Goodtime Paints, a couple of years ago:
Plus we even got to sneak a peek of one of her newest creations: the floor at the soon-to-be open children’s consignment boutique called Clover located in Richmond’s Carytown district. Sidenote: we’ll be showcasing even more inspiration from this stunning shop soon because it’s chock full of awesome (and doable!) ideas.
But in case you’re still in the dark about just how talented and inspiring Sunny is, allow us to shine a little light on the subject. Sunny serves up a boatload of tools and inspiration to make your next paint job work a little harder when it comes to creating a more unique, playful, personal, and beautiful space. We know her best for her stencils, color washes, and stains- which can bring some much-needed pattern to a blank floor or wall. But she’s also got monograms, decals, and even two books (Paint Can! and its kid-tastic sidekick).
So because Sunny has so much fun stuff to dish out, we’re excited to announce that TWO lucky winners will score an $100 shopping spree. So you have the chance to snag whatever goodies catch your eye on her site the most! And the rest of you will be able to cash in on a pretty sweet discount too (stay tuned for those details on Thurs). But enough jibber-jabber. Here are all the deets:
- PRIZE: $100 towards anything from Sunny’s Goodtime Paints
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “SHINE ON ME!” and…
- BONUS QUESTION: … help us get the creative painting juices flowing and share your favorite use of paint (whether it’s something you’ve done or just something you’ve seen). Is it a surprisingly stellar color combo? An object that was totally transformed by a few brushstrokes? Or perhaps a painted pattern or stencil that really make the room?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 21st at 8pm EST
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: Two
- PRIZE SHIPS: The lower 48 United States
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winners will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday. Good luck!

I have just finished witnessing the transformative powers of paint when I completed my son’s nursery! I can’t wait for our little boy to get here so he can enjoy it himself.

I love taking painting risks in fun, small, or flexible spaces. Like our powder room off our family room. I want to do a bold fun color that I’d never try in the living room or kitchen!

I once painted a large butcher block with a harlequin diamond pattern and it brought so much life to the kitchen! The best part was that it only took 30 minutes!

I really hope I win this because my dining room is next on my list and because we live in an 1900’s era victorian… this could be the best room re-do ever!

I painted the plywood floor in my former jailhouse (really!) when I couldn’t afford carpet after buying kitchen cabinets. It stayed pretty nice for the six months it took me to get carpet in!

I love the use of large stenciling with paint, rather than wallpaper–since wallpaper makes for a messy transition when one decides they want to change it.
However, one I do not love is the mosaic fish border in my kitchen… we have yet to paint over and it needs a new look!

SHINE ON ME! My best recent use of paint was to use Idea Paint (http://bit.ly/btjlNk) on one wall of my studio. It’s a dry-erase whiteboard paint for expressing yourself–doodling, mind-mapping, calendaring, etc. A friend used it in her kitchen as a whiteboard for her kids to draw on, and she was kind enough to share it with me. I use it to visualize something I have to think through, whether by drawing it, outlining it, or mapping it. Thanks for the giveaway!

Awesome giveaway! My cousin has a faux-painting business and he’s SUPER talented. One of my favorites of his was he took a plain cheap-o laminate countertop, and made it look identical to real marble! I was amazed!

SHINE ON ME! Please!
I have been known to take a can of paint to just about anything.
Most recently, I hit our teeny tiny NYC bathroom with some leftover Martha Stewart paint in ‘Tailor’s Chalk’. Suddenly the little hole looks so bright, crisp and clean!

Paint totally transforms a home. I cried every morning when we moved into our home because it was dark and dated. After a few coats of paint, the results were amazing!

My best use of paint has been to redo some tacky old furniture I inherited for our guest bedroom. It was particle-board “wood” which I painted all white and now looks downright darling!

I am still enamored with a bedroom you featured a few months back that showcased a stencil pattern and tone on tone paint, but the use of gloss to make the stencil “pop”. I LOVE it and plan on using it and my self-proclaimed “stencil goddess” mother as my master bedroom insperation!

Nothing is more exciting to me than popping the cover off of a fresh can of paint. Don’t be afraid to pick a color that the paint guy may never have mixed before. I chose a bold shade of avocado green for the walls on my craft room. Sarcastically, my husband asked the guy behind the counter if he’d ever mixed that color before. The guy quickly responded “no”. That didn’t stop me and it turned out to be one of my favorite color selections in the whole house.

I love to pull different odd pieces of furniture together, uniting them by paint color. My basement is the place where tired old oak furniture goes to die, only to be born again in bright colors which breathe new life into them, and make them kind of funky and fun.

One of my favorite uses of paint was to paint the bottoms of a pair of jeans in high school (not house-related, sorry!). I painted roses up from the hem and loved them until they absolutely fell apart.

My husband and I are brand-new homeowners, and I am lucky enough to have a very generous father who is a decorative painter who was willing to stay at our new home for two solid weeks and paint it all according to our wishes. My favorite is the distressed stripe accent wall in the living room!
