After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Whitney says
Fabric me…please! My name means “White Island” and my sister’s name means “White Wave”…one would think my parents put intentional thought into these coordinating meanings, but they didn’t even know what our names meant. It was providential, though, because between my sister and I, I am the island and she is the wave…and we’re two whities.
Sarah W. says
FABRIC ME! My mother said that she named me Sarah Claire because “it was the prettiest name she could think of.” I used to tell her that she didn’t think hard enough (!). I wanted to be named Allison or Gillian. Now I like my name because it had stood the test of time and it doesn’t connect me to any particular decade.
Jessica says
Fabric Me!
My first name Jessica was picked because of the J. My mom is Jewish and it is a custom to name your child after the last person who has passed, so I was named after my mother’s paternal grandfather. My middle name is Erin after Ireland where my mother and father went on their honeymoon. I really connected to the name Erin especially after I took a trip to Ireland and ended up marrying my Husband who is 100% Irish. Our son has both those traditions, his name Brayden Ewan Peter is based off the first name just being Irish and cute, Ewan is from my maternal great grandmother, and Peter is my husband’s grandfather’s name. I know this is TMI, but is it all about names. :)

I know 2 things about my name. My first name, Deirdre, came to my parents, the day I was born. They had planned on naming me Whitney, but another lady came out of labor before they went in and declared she named her daughter, “Whitney, after Whitney Houston.” They thought it would be too common and switched to Deirdre at the last minute. It’s terrible and I go by my middle name Julia.
2nd, if I was a boy, they planned to name me Sam, not Samual. Sam Adam Meredith, so my initials would be the same as my name… apparently they thought, if I were a boy, that I wouldn’t be that smart.
Emmie says
Fabric Me!
I was named Erica after my mom’s father, Norman Eric, but I’ve been called Emmie since I was a baby. My middle name is Megan, so she combined the two…Erica Megan…E.M…Emmie. Kind of complicated but I like my name. It’s just been annoying throughout school because I always have to tell the teacher/professor on the first day of class that I go by Emmie, not Erica.
Lyndsey Mart says
FABRIC ME!
My name means “from the Lindon Tree”. Not too amazing, but my husband likes to make the stretch that Lindon Trees are used for healing and I work in the medical field so it all makes sense. Right? I actually just learned on my last birthday that I really was named after someone. And that person was someone that my mom used to have in her in-home day care, Lyndsey-the-biter. Yup, the person I was named after was known for sending all the other kids home with bite marks on their face and arms. Not that my mom was hoping for a biter, but she just liked the name :)
Esther says
FABRIC ME! (please!!) I’m named after my dad’s great aunt. I wanted to be named Veronica when I was younger because my name is so old fashioned. Eventually I grew to LOVE my name. I wouldn’t trade it for any other now :)
Abigail says
Fabric me! My name means my fathers joy- it’s kinda cool because I’m the only girl after a long line of boys :)
Monica says
FABRIC ME!
No special reason for my parents picking my first name other than they both liked it. But my middle name is the same as my mom, just spelled differently.
Sara B. says
Fabric me!!!!!! It means princess, but nothing special about it. My parents chose it because it was unique at the time- but eventually it became one of the most popular names.
Donna says
FABRIC ME!
My brother and sister both have names that start with D as well, though my parents swear they didn’t plan it that way. I think it made for quite a tongue-twister when they were calling us for dinner. :-)
Alison Sutter says
FABRIC ME!! My mom took one L out of my name because my last name was 12 letters long and she didn’t want it to be any longer. Nothing personalized (like key chains) ever had the right spelling for me!
Rachel says
Fabric Me!
No special meaning to my name that I know of, they just liked it.
Amanda says
Fabric Me!
My name means loved one. Which is pretty heart warming. My favorite thing about my name though is that my family calls me Amanda-Panda
Dylan says
FABRIC ME!
I love my name (even though most people mistake me as a boy when they hear it) because I was named after Bob Dylan!
Allison says
Fabric Me!!!! NO special meaning to my first name – my parents just liked it … but my middle name is after my paternal grandmother, & it works!
Jessica H says
FABRIC ME! My name does not come from anyone else in our family, but my parents liked the sound of my name + the meaning “gift from God/wealthy.”
Becca says
Fabric me……
No idea!!! My mum can’t remember
Erica Smith says
FAB ME! My parents had actually decided to name me Emily. It wasn’t until after I was born that my mom decided that I didn’t look like an ‘Emily’, and was more of an ‘Erica’
Kim says
Fabric me!
No special significance for the first name, but my middle name is after my mom

Ellen says
FABRIC ME!
Lena G. says
FABRIC ME!
I’m named after my great-great grandma who was the nicest person my mom knew. My middle name is the same as my mom’s and my daughter has it too. My husband and his dad also have the same middle name so we carried that tradition on with our son too.
Caitlyn says
FABRIC ME!
My name’s Caitlyn. It’s Celtic and apparently means pure. My Mum (I’m Australian, don’t dis the way I spell the shortened version of Mother!) chose it because she liked it from the tv show “degrassi”. My middle name is Dulcie which was my Dads grandmothers name. If my next child is a girl her middle name will be Dulcie too, especially since my son and hubby share a middle name :)
Andrea says
FABRIC ME! My bedroom needs curtains! Andrea means “womanly” and was derived from my mother’s middle name of Ann. My online persona is usually “Anakalia” which is the Hawaiian version of Andrea. I just found you guys recently and love you so much that I have read your entire archive! Keep on keepin’ on. :-)
Sarah says
Fabric Me!
My parents waited to meet me to choose between Katharine and Sarah…turned out that all my best friends are now Katies!
Becky says
FABRIC ME! When my parents chose my name, Rebecca, my mom swore she’d never shorten it to Becky. To this day, no one has ever used my full name, and I’ve been a Becky all my life. Go figure!
Jessica says
Fabric me please!
Mike says
FABRIC ME!
I’m not a huge fan of my name because it’s not original at all. I bet you know at least 5 Mikes…
Lisa says
FABRIC ME! No real meaning behind my name and no real story behind picking it.
Kate says
FABRIC ME!!
My name (Kathleen) means pure :) I was named after a teacher my mom worked with during her first teaching job. My middle name (Emily) is my mom’s first name. I have gone by Katie or Kate my whole life. Honestly, I’ve always wished I was a Katherine instead of a Kathleen ~ Katherine was my grandma’s middle name. :)
Kathleen says
FABRIC ME, ME, ME!!
I was named after a friend of my parents. The funny thing is, she goes by “Kathy” but I have never been called that!I’ve always liked my name (except when someone who doesn’t know me calls me Kathy)!
Megan says
FABRIC ME!
Both my parents liked my name but they couldn’t agree on the spelling. So in the end dad won, it also helped that he’d spelt it to everyone. My mum wanted it to be more gaelic so it would have been spelt MEGHAN. I remember looking into adding megHan jaYne (an H and a Y) to my name when I was 22 but I as I didn’t have a job I couldn’t afford it. I like my name :)I just wish it wasn’t linked to MARGARET because I’m not a big fan of that name. :(
Krystle says
FABRIC ME!
My parents always said my name’s unique spelling came from a famous actress. This post prompted me to finally find out who that was… Turns out Krystle was a lead character from an 80’s soap opera “Dynasty”. Not an actual person. I did not see that coming.
Carrie says
Fabric Me!
My mom chose my name from the Little House on the Prairie books.
chelsea says
Fabric me!! Someone mentioned my name and my parents liked it. Kind of boring story, but I don’t mind! I’m hoping for fabric to make curtains in our nursery! (Twin girls are coming any day now)
Betty Johnson says
FABRIC ME! No real significance to my name – something my mother liked.
Meghan P says
Fabric Me… My parents literally fought so badly about what to name me that I was over 36 hours old before they settled on Meghan.
Anne says
FABRIC ME! It’s Anne…after the queen :-)
Maryanne says
FABRIC ME!
I was named by the nurse. Why you ask? My parents were fighting over my name, my mom wanted Robin but my dad wanted Bonnie. Finally the nurse walked in and said name her Mary and be done with it. Viola!
Priscilla says
FABRIC ME!
My name was actually a name my aunt picked out for my cousin, she didn’t realize she was having a boy until birth. My mom loved the name Priscilla so much that she asked my aunt if she could use it.
Sandy says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my great-grandmother Aleksandra who was born 100 years before me.
Alie says
FABRIC ME!!
My name is Alejandra, which means defender of man kind (that’s a lot of pressure! Haha). I go by Alie, b/c most people can’t pronounce Alejandra.
Andrea says
FABRIC ME! PLEASE!
I got my name for my cousin who passed away about 10 years before I was born. I was going to be named Amanda, but at the last minute my grandmother suggested the name Andrea.
Heather says
Fabric Me! No special meaning here, my parents just really liked the name.
Esther says
Fabric Me! It was the only name my parents agreed on!
Allison says
Fabric me!
My parents named me Allison because they didn’t know anyone with that name and thought it was beautiful. I ended up being one of four Allison’s in my grade. :)
Morgan says
Fabric me!…
30 something years ago, Morgan was very uncommon. It made me feel special to be the only Morgan in school. Now I meet young kids with my name.
