After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Fabric me! No meaning to my name.

Fabric Me!
I am adopted. My parents thought they were getting a boy and I was going to be named after my dad, James. Well whoops, I am a girl and the adoption agency had made an error, so Jamie it was.
Maranda H. says
Fabric me! I’m named after my grandmas…MARgie, ANn, and DonnA (step grandma). MAR+AN+DA…I suspect my parents didn’t know how to spell and figured out this happy coincidence after the fact
Jackie says
Fabric me!
My parents hadn’t decided what to name me before I was born, but then the first time my dad held me he called me Jackie and then it was decided!

Melissa says
FABRIC ME!!!
My name means “honey bee” and I love it! I’ve always loved bees too, but I’m not sure it’s because of my name… :)
Megan says
Fabric Me!
My mom loved my first name and my middle name was given to me in tribute to her sister who passed away.
Ashley says
Fabric me!
When I was younger, I always wanted to go by my middle name, Dawn, since she was the cool one in the babysitters club books, but my Mom said no ;)
JulieKP says
FABRIC ME! There is no great inspiration or story about my name. My parents liked it and that was that. But my girls, Sarah and Emily, have great stories. Both girls are adopted from China. I was very concerned about whether to include their Chinese names that were given to them by the orphanage. “What if they hate us when they’re 16 because we didn’t include their Chinese names?”, I wailed to my hubby. “Honey, they are going to hate you for a lot of reasons when they’re 16. Their Chinese names probably won’t even be in the top 10.” Smart man.
Also Sarah’s full name means Princess, Chief of the Valley, Ruler of the Mountain. If she doesn’t grow up to be a ruler of something I’ll be totally shocked.
Elizabeth Apostola says
Fabric me! I’m a fourth generation Elizabeth and each generation has gone by a different nickname — I plan on passing the tradition down to my daughter if I ever have one!
shauna says
FABRIC ME! No meaning behind my name.
Fiona says
Fabric Me! My first name is because it was my Grandmothers favourite name, my middle name is her first name and my second middle name is an old family name, being the gaelic version of the scottish clan that my grandmothers mothers mother came from.

Fabric me!
Kym V. says
FABRIC ME!
I was born “Kim” but changed it to a “y” in 7th grade when I was going through an innnnndivvvidual stage. Fast forward to age 30 when I officially went before a judge and paid $90 to have it legally changed because Kym suits me so much better. The judge even said..”what’s the big deal with changing the one letter?” Oh Mr. Judge if only I could tell you all about it :)
Taffee says
Fabric Me! My name came from my mom. She says she was sitting around one day and thought of the name Taffee. I think she was addicted to salt water taffy though… :)
Judy says
FABRIC ME! I was named after the obstetrics nurse that took care of my Mom at the hospital. My middle name came from my grandfather.
Kimberly says
FABRIC ME!!! My name means “a mighty fortress; a leader” and well, that tends to be true ;) I do tend to ‘step up’ and get things done, and I’m not likely to take ‘no’ for an answer very quickly ;) My parents chose my name simply because they really liked the name Kimberly.
However, my Mom does *HATE* it when people call me Kim..she’s known to say “I named you KIMBERLY, not KIM”…having said that, growing up that was a natural shortening of my name at school etc, and she was the only one who used Kimberly…and when she did, it was often because I was in trouble (I was a rather precocious child, what can I say..). Consequently, I tend to blink when people use my full name :)
Sunita Thomas says
FABRIC ME!! My name means ‘the one who walks the good path’ – whatever!! :)
leah kerbs says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name, Cathryn is my great-grandma’s name. My parents picked my name because they liked it…no other reason. I do like my name now but I didn’t growing up. At one time, I wanted my name to be Rainbow Brite :) good thing I grew out of that!
leah kerbs says
I almost forgot…my name means weary. Not so fab, but there ya go!
Karianne says
Fabric Me! No special significance. My parents just liked the name.
Jessica says
Fabric me! There was a Jessica in a soap opera my mom watched in the 80s. I’m not sure which one. She liked it because it was unique/ different. Apparently half of all mothers in America thought the same thing because it is the least unique name. The only time I wanted to change it was in elementary school when not only was there another Jessica, but another Jessica R., so we both had to be referred to by our full names.
Mallory Perkins says
FABRIC ME! I was named Mallory after the character in family ties(80’s flashback!) In New Zealand it’s very rare and so I get lot’s of strange versions but I have always been happy to have an unusual name!
Rashi says
FABRIC ME!!
My name means zodiac in Hindi.. and it also denotes huge amount of money.. Being a banker’s daughter.. i guess second meaning was what my parents were after!!
Jen F says
Fabric me! A funny story about my name is that the hospital threatened to put “baby girl” on my birth certificate since my parents took so long to name me.
grace cho says
FABRIC ME!!! ahhh the story to my name… long story short, i was born a ‘zaneta’ because my mom wanted to be different and had a nice nurse friend named anita. but years later, i changed my own name to grace because zaneta wasn’t working for me. haha
Katie M. says
FABRIC ME! I don’t think there is any huge meaning behind my name. All I know is that my mom didn’t name me Katherine because she didn’t want people to call me Kathy. If I were to have a nicname she wanted it to be Katie. So she got straight to the point and named me Katie. I always wanted a different name as a kid. I thought it sounded like a baby!
Angela E. says
FABRIC ME!!
My name means messenger of God (or angel)..My parents saw a girl who worked at Burger King with the name and liked it, so it stuck! I haven’t always loved it, however, I do like that its common enough that everyone knows it but not so common that there were other Angelas in my classes..I was always the only one!
Laura D says
FABRIC ME…
no idea where my parents got my name… but I have always liked it
Bekki says
FABRIC ME!!! (Please!!!!)
My name has long story of where they choose the name, but the spelling is what is the more interesting story. My parents chose a rather common name, but went to their German roots for the spelling. B-e-K-K-I… (Rebekka). I hated it growing up because NO ONE spelled it right, and it was never on any name gifts. Now I love it and I don’t even associate my name with the common spelling Becky, it’s not me!
Keny says
Fabric Me!
My name has no special meaning to it. My parents just liked it and thought it suited me.
Mandy says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after the Barry Manilow song!
Rashi says
FABRIC ME!!
My name means zodiac in Hindi.. and it also denotes huge amount of money.. Being a banker’s daughter.. i guess second meaning was what my parents were after!! ;-)
Sarah says
FABRIC ME! I am named after a character in a children’s book called “Magic Elizabeth.” In the story, a little girl named Sally has to stay with her old Aunt Sarah for the summer and she finds a journal in the attic written by another Sally. She eventually learns that the Sally from the journal is her Aunt Sarah because Sally is a nickname for Sarah. I never went by Sally, but my mom did call me “Sally Soup” when I was little!
Alison says
Fabric Me!
I think my Mom saw my name in a magazine and liked it…not so interesting.
Chelsie says
FABRIC ME!
My parents named me after some movie character, and then they spelled it wrong.
Stephanie D. says
FABRIC ME!!!
Martha says
FABRIC ME!
I’m named for my grandmother, who was named for her grandmother.
Angie says
Fabric me!!
I’m named after my aunt who was named after her aunt who was named after her aunt. So a whole long line of aunt-to-niece namesakes. I’ve always kind of liked my name, but of course I used to think it would be great to have a more exotic name like Jewel or Belinda or Cordelia. (Because as a ten-year-old, those were exotic.)
Elle says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my mother’s best friend (first name) and one of her sisters (middle name). I’ve never been very fond of that aunt so my middle name is a bit of a sore spot for me (however a gift card for fabric would not be!).
Kristy says
Fabric Me! My name is is a shortened version of my mom’s middle name…
Ashley says
FABRIC ME!
My mom knew a little boy named Ashley and decided she liked as a girl name, little did she know that eventually everyone would name their girl Ashley!
Jackie says
FABRIC ME! I was named Jacqueline after one of my mom’s bridesmaids.
Barathi says
fabric me!
My name is the name of an Indian poet that my mom loved.
Elsie says
FABRIC ME! My parents liked the meaning of the name Elizabeth but didn’t want me to be the last one at the kindergarten table still writing my name while the others were already out to recess. And they wanted a more unique derivative of the name. Was way too unique for my taste growing up, but love it now.
Emily says
Fabric ME! My name, Emily, is after my great, great grandmother.
Brooke C says
FABRIC ME!
My name isn’t a family name or anything… my mom just liked the sound of it. I am really glad Dad vetoed her first choice though: Cherry-Brooke.
kirsten oliphant says
FABRIC ME!
My mom was set on naming me Katherine, but my parents got a baby name book as the prize in a Cracker Jack box and my dad was sold on Kirsten. I think I would have been a snobbier person as a Katherine. Not that Katherines are snobby, but I certainly would have been.
Christy says
FABRIC ME!
Full name is Christine. They just liked the name. I’ve been Christy for my whole life though. It fits much better.
Andrea says
FABRIC ME! Up until a couple of years ago, I didn’t know there was a story behind my name. It turns out that my dad knew an Andrea back when he was in college. She was dating his roommate for a while. She’d had cancer fairly young and no longer had various internal organs, but she was not letting that limit her in any way. She was there in their lives for a while before her upward trajectory moved her onward, kicking ass all the while. My dad was so impressed by her that when he finally had a daughter, years later, that was the person he wanted to name me after. Funny how I didn’t hear the story until I was in my mid-20s.
LuRae says
FABRIC ME! I was named after a dish pattern — Luray dishes — although they changed the “y” to an “e” to feminize it. And I’ve been doomed to a life of spelling my name ever since. On the bright side — they could have liked Pfaltzgraff dishes!
