After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Ziva says
FABRIC ME! My name was the name of a Slavic goddess of fertility.
Catherine Walker says
Fabric Me! My name comes from the town of Catharine, New York, where my Grandfather was born! The town was named for a Native American queen who governed the region before it was colonized by settlers. It makes me feel much more regal than I really am :)
Darcy says
FABRIC ME!
Man, I would love to win this one. I need some new curtains! My name is Darcy and it was my mother’s maiden name. Apparently when they told my grandpa that’s what they were naming me, he threw a fit because he thought that would make my name Darcy Darcy. Luckily, my mom had taken my dad’s last name or I would have been in for a world of teasing in school.
Zohreh Daly says
FABRIC ME! My name is Zohreh. I am half Iranian and my name translates into “venus” in Persian.
Erin says
FABRIC ME!
My Mom named me Christina in the hospital, but my Dad changed the paper work without telling her to Erin. (yes, they are still married)
Addie says
Fabric me! It was my great grandmothers name!
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
My mom always wanted a little girl named Sarah – so when I was their firstborn (and happened to be a girl), her wish came true.
Pebbles says
Fabric me! My name came from a dream my father had.
Erica says
I am one of three sisters who all have names that start with e, so I think I got Erica because it sounded good with my sisters names!
Ivonne says
FABRIC ME!
No idea why my parents chose my name but they misspelled it!
Not sure if that’s better or worse than my “surprise twin sister’s” name (no kidding! this happened in the days before ultrasound), whose name was suggested by the lady laying in the hospital bed next to my mum;) when it turned out that another one was urgently required.
The story also involves my grandma thinking that excessive alcohol was talking when my merry dad called to inform her that they had had twins :) so she refused to believe him…
Glenn says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my aunt since she had all boys and always wanted a girl. However, my name ended up being what most people would call a guy’s name! Her name had been Helen Glenn or Glenny for short so the Glenn part was more like her name. When I was younger I wanted a different name because everyone expected me to be a boy or I’d get mail sent to “Mr Glenn”. Now I like that its different.
Would love to get some fabric to finish my kitchen project!
Rachel says
FABRIC ME!
HI! My name is Rachel. And well, my dad wanted to name me Raquel because he just loved Raquel Welch. Fortunately, my mom stepped up with a religiously-inspiried compromise because she just couldn’t let me go through life with a name that would be constantly mispronounced and when nick-named, becomes “Rocky” (thanks mom). So, I became the similar and more anglicized, Rachel, meaning “little lamb”. I’ve always liked my name : ) And my initials are, RNR, and goodness knows, everybody needs a little more of that in their life. *cue Lou Bega’s “Mambo Number Five”*…
Robin O says
FABRIC ME!
My maiden name initials were RJR – the same as my late grandfather’s. And my middle name is after my father’s cousin. I love having a name that’s somehow tied to family!
Morgan says
FABRIC ME! My name isn’t particularly interesting…it’s my grandmother’s maiden name.
Amanda says
FABRIC ME!
My name means, ‘beloved’ or ‘worthy of love’. I’d like to think it fits me! There isn’t any particular reason my parents chose the name other than the fact that they both liked the sound. It doesn’t make a very good story, does it? ;)
debi says
“FABRIC ME!
My Mum was going to name me either Bonnie Jean or Debi Jean and I’m glad she picked Debi Jean! LOL
My nickname is Junior. My Mum’s name is Jeanne. ( how I got Jean for a middle name) At work I’m Jeanne Junior or June or just plain Junior.
I got that nickname because I laugh exactly like my Mum and it is pretty unique.
So unique in fact that one Sun. she was at work and laughed on the server line and a customer came over to the doorway and yelled her maiden name out.
He has recognized her laugh about 40 years after the last time he had heard it! ( we live in South Carolina and my Mum went to school in PA!!)
Morgan says
FABRIC ME!
Morgan means ‘by the sea’ so it was fitting that I grew up by the ocean! Though I probably would have ended up with that name anyhow :).
Melissa K. says
FABRIC ME! My name doesn’t have special significance but does (supposedly) mean ‘honeybee’ in Greek.
Danielle says
Fabric me! My mom apparently demanded that my name be what it is. It used to be pretty rare 30 yrs ago, but it is pretty standard today!
indigorchid says
Fabric me!
Melissa says
FABRIC ME!
My parents named me Melissa, after singer Melissa Manchester, who my dad was a huge fan off!
Dana says
FABRIC ME! A girl scout showed up on my mom’s doorstep selling cookies and her name was Dana. The rest is history… and it all explains my inappropriate love for Thin Mints.
Mary W. says
FABRIC ME!
My name was originally supposed to be Naomi or Rebecca, but when I was born my parents looked at each other and said, “She looks just like a Mary”.
For the rest of my life, I’ve been hearing everyone else say, “You just don’t look like a Mary.”
:D
Kate says
FABRIC ME!
“Take me home again, Kathleen . . .”
Emily says
FABRIC ME!
My parents couldn’t decide on a name but had narrowed it down to Alexandria and a few other names. When I was born, the doctor asked what my name was and my dad screamed out, “Emily!” and that ended up being my name. Good thing they both liked the name. :) My middle name is Elizabeth which is one of my great aunt’s names.
My husband, CJ, was named after his dad (Craig Julius) so his whole life he thought that it was a “family name”. At our wedding, I asked his grandpa who originally had the name Craig Julius and he said that CJ’s dad was the first one. They couldn’t come up with a name for him so, on the last day they were in the hospital, they were watching a baseball game. One of the player’s names was Craig Julius so they decided to name him after that player. I’m not sure if that’s exactly what happened but that’s how his grandpa remembers it. Super random but it worked out!
Emily W says

My dad noticed my name in a 2-week old newspaper he was reading :) my middle name is borrowed from my aunt.
Jackie says
Fabric Me!!!!! Nothing special about my name
Tim says
Fabric me!
No story behind my name…

FABRIC ME! My name means Ireland and it was chosen by my Irish-roots loving mom… who also liked it from “The Waltons” TV show. :-)
Tammy C says
Fabric me!! A certain famous country singer was on the radio when I was born — could have been worse. :-)
Ashley S. says
FABRIC ME!
Nothing too significant about my name (that I know of) but my parents ended up naming all of us with names beginning with ‘a’. Our middle names go in order too. AL(K), AM, AN, and then they didn’t want the next initials to be AOK they started back at ‘a’ – AA, AB, AC & AD. Yup, you counted right! There’s seven of us. And because everyone always asks… Yes we’re all from the same two parents, and no, there aren’t any multiples. :)
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Sarah but when I was a child my whole family used to call me Jule. Nowadays I’m mostly called Sarah and I’m fine with that.
Greetings from Germany!
Keegan R says
FABRIC ME!
Mum fell in love with the name ‘Keegan’ after watching a famous English soccer player named Kevin Keegan play a match in Australia. She decided no matter what gender her baby was going to be, they would be named Keegan. Out I popped, a girl, and was named Keegan. She thought she was very clever to make up such a great name, only to later discover it was actually already a well known first name… and it was also a boy’s name. Did I mention I’m a girl? Fun fact: I used to be called Kevin by my sister as a joke when I was being bratty as a child. I hated that more than actually having a boy’s name.
Kristin (Aust) says
FABRIC ME! My name is Scandanavian in origin even though my parents are not! Mum used to work with a lady that was so lovely, she used her name for me :)
mamelynn says
Fabric Me!!!
My parents picked my name because they didn’t know anyone else with it… funny thing is it ended up be a pretty popular name when I was a baby and now I have two sisters (one step one in-law) with the same first name! I haven’t ever minded my name but my parents didn’t give me Marie as a middle name (first one in like 6 generations to not have it!!) and now everyone in the family sense then have given their first daughter Marie as a middle name…hahaha
Beth_N says
FABRIC ME! I was named after my great grandmother.
She was a strong , lovely person, so hope it was something special my mom saw in me that made her name me after her gran.

FABRIC ME!!
I am not named after anyone, but my husband’s middle name is Grey, after his grandfather. We were planning to name our son Christian Grey for the longest time… But that seems like it might be a tad bit inappropriate now… *sigh*
Maria says

From what I know I am the 5th generation of Maria in my family

Susan says
FABRIC ME! I think my mom named me after her childhood friend.
Sandy says
FABRIC ME!
My Great Grandmother gave me my first name, Sandra. My Grandmother gave me my second name, Renee. Other than references to Annie’s dog, and Grease, it’s a great name. :)
CrayolaJW says
FABRIC ME!
My name has no hidden meaning which is kinda boring really…
Mahal says
FABRIC ME!
The handle I use online is more fun than my real name! It’s the Tagalog word meaning “love”, and my first boyfriend called me this. I kinda prefer it to my birth name.
Tarah says
FABRIC ME!
My name has a number of different meanings although it’s not commonly spelt with an h at the end. But it turns out that my name was just picked because my parents liked it and I keep getting assured by my Mum that it had nothing to do with “Gone with the wind” :). Not that I’d mind really – I love my name.
Kate says
Fabric me!
My mother claims he wanted something “short, sweet, and to-the-point”.
Kelly says
Fabric me! No name story to share!
Rosie says
Fabric me! I think I was named after my Dad’s cousin. We’ve always been referred to as ‘big Rosie’ and ‘little Rosie’ at family gatherings.
