After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Nancy says
FABRIC ME! Nope, nothing special about my name – Nancy, I was the 4th girl and I think they ran out of ideas (maybe not since my 2nd sister is named Barbie) :)
Maky says
FABRIC ME!
Mine is a nickname that I apparently gave myself when I was little and couldn’t pronounce my real name (Maria Christina) – it stuck ever since :-)
Megan says
FABRIC ME!
No meaning behind my name, my parents just liked it :)
Diane says
FABRIC ME ! Diane if I was a Girl and Yann if I had been a boy, I guess they liked the sound :)
Cathy says
FABRIC ME My parents just liked the name Catherine but I like to think I was named after St. Catherine of Siena.
Valentina says
Fabric Me!
My name is pretty common, but I do have a name-related story for you. Until the very last minute my mother wanted to call me with another name. Then, right after I was born, my parents had second thoughts and my father picked the name “Valentina”. To this day my mother keeps insisting that the other name would have been much better suited… What she doesn’t know is that I chose it as my pen name for my literary work. Things have a strange way of working out…
Have a great day! :)
Stacey says
FABRIC ME! My mom was a Stacy Keech fan. She decided to put the ‘e’ in to make it less obvious I was named after a man!
Rachel T says
FABRIC ME!
My first name doesn’t carry any familial significance, but the funny thing is that my parents had a completely different name picked out but when they “met” me they decided I didn’t look like that name at all! Thus, Rachel :)
Andrea says
FABRIC ME!
My name was chosen so my Chinese-born Father could pronounce it. When I was fve, I chose to be called Vanessa, but that was short lived.
Aoife D says
FABIRC ME!
Aoife D says
*FABRIC ME!
Michele says
Fabric me! My name only has one L in it, which is super silly. Michele is my mother’s middle name, and her parents spelled it that way to shorten it due to a long last name. Nothing exciting!!!
Saskia says
FABRIC ME! A very typical Dutch Name, with no real meaning (in old Germanic it meant Knife – not sure that is the prettiest meaning to a name :)) So maybe its better to say that Rembrandt’s wife was also called Saskia
Missy says
FABRIC ME!! My full first name is Melissa, which means “honey bee”! My middle name (Sarah) was my great-great grandmother’s name (my mom’s favorite growing up).
Sofie says
FABRIC ME!
When I was born, the midwife who delivered me puttered about, telling my parents how to care for me with a new name in every sentence. Like, “remember to give Helen a bath every day” and “here’s how to hold Dinah”. At some point she used the name Sofie, and my parents looked at each other and said, yes! That’s her name. :)
Johanna says
FABRIC ME! My name had to be “pronouncable” in both German and English, and my dad just really liked it :) (Note to self: Need to find out more about it!)
Nicole says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name is my mom’s first name. I kept my maiden name when I got married, because my parents had no sons, and because I got married when I was 31 and already trying to establish a fashion line under my own name. The doctors thought I was a boy (from my heartbeat in the womb–before ultrasounds were so common), so my parents decided on my name a few hours after I was born. My first name is quite common for girls born the same year I was, so I was always one of several in my class. I went by a nickname at home, and it felt strange to be called by my actual first name when I started kindergarten. When I turned 13 I asked my family to please discontinue the juvenile nickname and call me by my full first name. They actually all use various nicknames for me, and only my mother uses my full first name. I went through quite a period of time even into adulthood in which my first name didn’t really seem to capture “me”, and in a conversation with my boyfriend at the time, we simultaneously said maybe I could be a Penelope. Apparently, there’s a lot in a name!
niksoap says
FABRIC ME!
Nicole means victory or people’s victory which I prefer. They’re both pretty good though!
Grace says
FABRIC ME! Puh-lease!
My mom picked my name because she wanted me to be graceful, but my pre-marriage initials have the real significance. GEM-Grace Eileen Mathews.
Janey says
FABRIC ME!
Janey is actually my nickname. I picked it myself, as my character name for Renaissance Faire. “Mistress Jane” onstage quickly became “Janey” backstage and then it stuck.
I do like my real name, too. It’s biblical and classic. I now have the baby name book where my parents wrote down the names they liked and then put stars next to the three they chose (me, my sister, and a boy name that didn’t get used). Jane wasn’t on their list, though!
Petra says
FABRIC ME! My name means rock. My dad apparently heard it on the radio. I have been known to get mail with the only thing that I had in common with the name and address was my first name.
Abigail says
Fabric me!
Delphine says
FABRIC ME!
Back in the day while my folks were dating they saw a movie in which two of the characters where named Monique and Delphine. My mom decided there and then that if she married this guy and had two daughters they would be called Monique and Delphine.
Tina says
Fabric me!
I am so excited this giveaway ships internationally. My name is the only girls name my parents could agree on!
Denise says
Fabric me! I’m named after my dear great aunt who was like my grandmother to me. It’s pretty safe to say that if I have a daughter, her middle name will be the same.
Kelsey M. says
FABRIC ME!!
My name means “From the ship’s island,” “refuge,” and “brave” which is fitting because I was made in Hawaii while my parents were based there for Naval service (sorry, I know that is TMI). I never really liked it that much until I married a Marine, and realized that I have the opportunity to try to live up to my name’s meanings. Life as a military spouse requires a great deal of bravery, as well as a duty to provide a constant place of safe and rejuvenating refuge for him to call home.
Angèle says
Fabric me !
My name means angel (ha!) and messenger ! It’s a really uncommon (read : old) name here in France so when I see someone called Angèle it’s always a bit weird. And it’s worse when I hear someone call it, ha!
Elise says
FABRIC ME !
I love that you guys are doing worldwide freebies :) !
No special story behind my name, but I like it since it is not too much used, but still not too unusual.
Also, it is easy to pronounce it in a lot of languages
Maggie says
FABRIC ME! My Dad always loved the name Margaret, but it was Mom who pushed for “Maggie Mae” because of her love for Rod Stewart!
Jo says
Fabric Me! My name is Joanna. My mum chose it because one of her favourite books was Little Women, and she liked Jo. She wanted to give me a name that she could call me “Jo” with but she wasn’t fond of Josephine, so Joanna I am!
Miya says
Fabric me! Well… let’s just say that without the place in Japan that I am named after, I wouldn’t exist… and now the whole internet knows it.
Laura says
FABRIC ME!
My first name is just one my parents liked, but I got the middle name Victoria because I was born on Empire Day (which is no longer celebrated in the UK for obvious reasons).
Maria Grace says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my paternal grandmother who was also Maria – but it has never really… sat with me. As a child I wasn’t bothered, but the older I get the more un-Maria I feel. Maria is just so… old and strict sounding, whereas I don’t feel old or strict at all =)
Rossella says
FABRIC ME!
My name Rossella (italian translation of Scarlet) was picked from the famous film “Gone with the wind”
Lea says
FABRIC ME!
My mother got the name from a Journalist she liked, also my parents liked short and unusual names (which it was at the time I was born). There are a lot of different meanings to my name, one I like is “lioness”. :) My second name is Maria, after my grandma. I never wished for another name. I like it a lot!
Karina Jean says
Fabric Me!! My middle name is a family name and has been handed down through 5 generations on both sides of my family!!
Gena says
FABRIC ME! My name is officially Virginia Mason, which is also the name of a hospital in Seattle. Virginia Mason was the name of my great aunt and my great grandfather was a founder of the hospital – so if I use my real name around Seattle, I always get a funny look. :) I go by Gena, though, so people don’t usually know my little secret.
Dalma says
FABRIC ME!
Brygida says
Fabric me! please. When I asked my parents about that, they just smiled. So i guess it happened to be by aacident. Maybe famous actress or so.
When I was little hated my name. No wonder, my last name in english is: borscht. Now I am proud cause it is really rarely name in my country ;)
Carine says
Fabric Me !
well, nothing special about my name, it means pretty in italian…but sounds less cute in French. So when I was a kid, i thought my name sounded so grown-up…and my ‘made-up’ name was Chloé
Kathryn says
FABRIC ME!
I had a grandmother and I have an aunt who have the same name as me, all spelled in our own way. When I was little I wished I had a different name, but as an adult, I love my name!
Valentina says
FABRIC ME! My name is Valentina (yeah, like Valentine’s Day) and it means “little, but strong”. My parents liked it. I completely agree with them because I LOVE it :-)
Sara says
FABRIC ME..my name, Sara, means princess!
Juliane says
FABRIC ME!
My parents just don’t wanted to have another Julia (a quite famous name in Germany), so they added +ne. Aren’t they creative ;-)
Greetings from Berlin, Germany
Laura T. says
FABRIC ME!
I don’t think my name means anything special :(
Dana says
FABRIC ME!
I’ m a third child and my parents had ran out of choices so they made a list and everyone who came into the house for nine months got to vote. When it got down to a few names my sisters got the right to veto anything they didn’t agree with, so here I am!
Skye says
FABRIC ME! My name is Skye and………I think my parents just wanted to punish me?? Hated this name as a kid but don’t mind it in adulthood as it’s not too common and not too out there!
Laura says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after a nurse who cared for my older sister while she had an extensive stay in the hospital as a child. She was an excellent and kind nurse!
Suzy Q says
Please FABRIC ME! My mother told me I was named after an actress (she can’t remember which one!!) I’d like to think I was named after the song “Susie Q.”
I love fabric!!!
Leisa says
FABRIC ME!
My folks wanted to give my brother (Rikki) and I names that “were a bit different”. My name is ‘Lisa’ but just with an extra letter. In the 80s in New Zealand, this was pretty wacky.
Although it drives me nutty having to spell it all the time for people (and my last name is weird, so I have to spell that out too), I actually love my name – it is a bit quirky, and so me.
