After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Melissa says
My mom picked the name Melissa because she liked Missy for a nickname. Ironically no one has ever called me that, including her – it’s always been Liss or Lissa
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
When I was a kid I thought that Sandra was the most gorgeous name ever and I wished that had been my name instead of boring ol’ Sarah. :-)

FABRIC ME!
My mother’s friend picked my name because it was her (the friend) favorite. When said friend’s daughter came along, she got the same name.

Fabric me! Pearl.
Miche says
“FABRIC ME!”
My name is something I gravitated into as I got older because I was tired of having the same name as so many other people. My name, Miche, is just short for Michelle…. pronounced “me”-“shhhh”
hannah says
Fabric ME!! My name was suppose to be a prarie name and a strong name. They had just moved to Chicago and my father was obsessed with americans moving west. He wanted a name that sounded like a pioneer.
AshleyB says
Fabric me! I was named after … wait for it … a soap-opera character. No joke. And apparently, prior to 1984, there were no other “Ashley”s to be found. Not so from, say, 1984 on. :) For those two reasons, I’ve always wanted a different (and bit more unique) name.
Katie says
FABRIC ME!
My name runs in my mom’s family – in fact our names are only one letter different… which has caused no end of credit reporting issues and mixed up mail =(
Linda E. says
FABRIC ME!
Named after my parents farm Lindarbrekka. My twin sister’s name is Linda too. But we have different middle names :)

FABRIC ME!
My parents picked my name in part because my first and (maiden) last name have 4 letters and my middle name has 8.
When i was 3, i came home from preschool and told my mom i wanted to change my name to Mary Smith (NO idea why). I’m glad i didn’t. ;)

Heather says
FABRIC ME!
I was supposed to be “Mike Jr.” but lo and behold, I didn’t have the Y chromosome, haha! My dad ended up opening the baby book and he chose the first girl name that he said sounded good.
Kate Sergent says

FABRIC ME!
My name means, deserving to be loved, and why yes I am!

Growing up I always wanted to be Samantha, I’m not sure why now but I must have thought it was a better name. Now however I love my name!
Alicia says
FABRIC ME! My name is part of my maternal grandmother’s name – Mary Alicia. However, she goes by Lee. When my parents told my paternal grandmother that they were thinking of calling me Alicia she looked at my other grandmother and said “Lee. Have you ever heard of the name Alicia? Who would name their daughter, Alicia?”. She said, “that’s my name – Mary Alicia…Lee is a nickname”.
Lea B says
FABRIC ME! My name is Lea which means a grassy meadow or the goddess of canoe makers depending on where you look.
…I’m not quite sure why there’s a goddess specifically for canoe makers but what ever floats their boat…or..er..canoe.
I think my mom just liked the name.
Kathy Z says
FABRIC ME!
I was kid #3 and there wasn’t any real reason behind my name, they just liked it. However, my nickname was Catastrophe Lynn – which I’m told was appropriate.
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
I’m afraid Sarah was just a popular name that my mum liked, I quite fancied taking my middle name (Alexis, after an old friend of my Dad’s) as a kid but I never felt up to reminding people constantly!
Diana says
Fabric ME!
I’m a child of the mid-1980s, and for YEARS my Mom refused to admit I was named after Princess Diana…but she finally caved about 5 years ago. :)

Sara P says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after both of my grandmothers.
Leanne says
FABRIC ME!
My mom was trying to find names that both sides of the family could pronounce (She’s French Canadian, and my father was from a Scotch American background). She’s not too certain where she found mine… either a soap opera or a shop girl!
Sara says
FABRIC ME! My name was pretty common/trendy at the time it was given (I always had to use my last initial in school.) but I don’t mind that my mom chose it because my dad had another name picked out that was really awful & old lady-ish.
Sil says
FABRIC ME!!!
My name was planned to be Alexandra after my grandmother since my parent found out I was a girl. Then a few weeks before her due date my mom was watching some italian movie and there was this “beautiful beautiful girl named Sylvia” and she had a change of heart. The interesting part part about it is that since I’m originally from Eastern Europe and we use the cyrillic alphabet when I moved to the US it had to be transformed, so it is spelled Silviya now and people always say how “exotic” it is LOL I kinda love the fact that it is a pretty common name but the spelling makes is a little special :-)
meryl rose says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after Meryl Streep. Not too shabby I think :)
Lindsay says
FABRIC ME!
Lindsay originates from the Linden Tree… okay not that exciting. My Dad wanted to name me Pearl, my mom wanted to name me Ginnie. So they settled on Lindsay. Ha!

FABRIC ME!
No exciting meaning behind my name :( but one day I will win one of your giveaways. I’m sure of it! :)

FABRIC ME! My parents found my first name in the newspaper and my middle name is after my grandmother. I was born in the afternoon but my first name is Dawn.
Erica says
FABRIC ME!
I was going to be Gretel or Gretchen. I am the third daughter. After I was born my mom made my dad promise no more trying for a boy. He agreed so they named me after him (Richard). Erica was the closest female version they were comfortable with and since all the kids got German names it worked. He is called Dick and they call me Ric. A year later my sister, Katrina, was born.
Linda says
FABRIC ME!
Linda means beautiful in Spanish and my mom liked that- although she doesn’t speak Spanish so not sure where she heard it!
Meghan says
FABRIC ME!
(Are you kidding me? 250 dollars worth of fabric? If I win this, I will have a heart attack from pure delight)
Anyway, I don’t know much except that I think my mom got my name from The Thornbirds, and that I was going to be Lindsay at first. Luckily, since I just married a man with the last name Lindsley, my mom named me Meghan. With an H because it looks more Celtic or something.
Anne says
FABRIC ME
Named after my great aunt. I often wished my name was another popular name. Always changing what name I wanted.
Laura C says
Fabric Me!
My parents are bilingual and wanted their kids to have names that they liked the sound of in both English and Spanish and ideally, are spelled the same in both languages. I travel to Spanish-speaking countries quite a bit and definitely appreciate their foresight!
Bree Dietrich says
FABRIC ME!
This is an amazing giveaway, I’m currently lamenting the fact I have NO curtains at all and need get cracking.
Originally, I was suppose to have a different name, but my cousin was born a few weeks before me, and our names were too similar. So off my parents went to see the movie Klute. Whenever Jane Fonda was on, apparently I did a little dance. My parents knew I must like it, and so here I am, named after a fictional hooker! (Thank goodness it’s fictional, or that could have been awkward!) To slightly disguise the fact, my parents mixed it up with a family name to become Breanna. And, I love my name and am thankful for happy accidents:)
