After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Lindsey d. says
FABRIC ME!
Lindsey was compromise between my dad’s pick of Elizabeth and my mom’s pick of Lindy. My middle name is my aunt’s middle name. Reading these comments reinforces my desire to name my future kids something with meaning.
Sarah says
FABRIC ME! I think my name means princess. I didn’t have a name for an entire week — my parents couldn’t decide on Sarah or Jessica. I was “Baby A,” until my dad won, and I’ve been Sarah ever since :).
Emily says
FABRIC ME!
My parents’ names both start with M and they wanted to continue the tradition, but couldn’t find any M names they liked. The first sound in Emily is M so they settled there.
Krissy says
FABRIC ME! My name is Kristina – was supposed to be called Kristy after Christie Brinkley! Krissy stuck instead. :)
Devon @ Green House, Good Life says
FABRIC ME!
Without divulging the actual name, I’ll say that my middle name was a weird hybrid of my parents’ first names. Given that they divorced when I was little, it never sat quite right with me, so I was happy to swap it out for my maiden name when I got married.
grace Nielsen says
FABRIC ME!! My name is Grace and I’ve always loved it; it is an old family name and I was named for my paternal grandmother, whom I never got to meet, so it always felt special to carry on her name.
Loved meeting you both at Rejuvenation in Portland – thrilling to discover that you are just as “real” and wonderful as you are on your blog! Thanks for making Portland a stop on your book tour!!
Leslie says
FABRIC ME!!!!!
MacKenzie says
Fabric me! All I have to say is that if I was a boy I was going to be named Roger. Thankfully, I was a girl. I like MacKenzie much better.
Anna's Mama says
FABRIC ME!
Anna's Mama says
Posted before I meant it too! See post below.
Eliza says
FABRIC ME!
My mom always loved the movie My Fair Lady, so my name is partly inspired by Eliza Dolittle. Beyond that, I think she just really liked the name. I really like my name now, but in 3rd grade I decided to go by Liz at school, unbeknownst to my parents, who came to open school night and were asked if they were Liz’s parents. They were very confused!
Momlady says
FABRIC ME!
Actual name: Mom just liked it. Momlady is from Calvin and Hobbes…I have friends significantly older than me who call me mom as well as just about everyone else…so I guess it’s a name that named me.
Jen says
Fabric me! My name means White one.. ?!
Beth says
FABRIC ME!
My name doesn’t have special meaning that I know of. My husband’s name is Ben and I really dislike that we’re “Ben and Beth”. It’s a little too sing-songy. My full name is Bethany so I wish I would have started going by Anne or Annie (from the second half of Beth-any) when we get together 11 years ago. Thanks for the chance! I’ve been eyeing your headboard fabric for months now to make curtains.
Katrin says
FABRIC ME!
… nothing too exciting behind my parents’ name choice, except that my mom always wanted to call her daughter Katrin.
MegS says
FABRIC ME!
Just like every other 20-something that shares my name, I have The Thorn Birds to thank. And I was never on a volleyball team with less than three Megans.
Amber Morris says
Fabric me. I was named by my mother and my name is a color…like Amber waves of grain :O)
Emma says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Emma Charlotte but was meant to be Charlotte Emma until my dad decided to swap it round when he went to register my birth. Luckily my mum preferred it this way round too when he told her :)
Chaley says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Chaley and I had always been told it was a combination of my parents names, Charles & Kathy. I’ve just recently learned that they really saw it in the newspaper just prior to my birth.
Shawn says
FABRIC ME!
My mom thought I looked like the person she named me after. Love my name but the “isn’t that a boys name” question gets old!
Amy says
FABRIC ME!
My dad had just joined the US Army, so he took the R out of Army and got Amy.
Robin Smith says
FABRIC ME!
My name was “Robert” until I popped out and, “SURPRISE! It’s a girl!” It has always annoyed me that I basically got a name by default, but I do prefer it to “Roberta” which it could have just as easily ended up. ;)
Jade says
FABRIC ME!
No cool story, sorry. I suppose Jade is actually my middle name, not my first name.
Katie says
FABRIC ME!!! My parents let my 5 year old sister name me. They also through tradition out the window with a family name, otherwise I’d be Ruth Elizabeth.
Emily M says
FABRIC ME!
My grandmother loved the poems of Emily Dickinson. My middle name is Mariah and came from some obscure song ‘I Call the Wind Mariah’ that I probably should have googled by now but haven’t….going to do that now!
Kelly says
FABRIC ME!
My name is a variation of my grandmother’s. When she got married she ditched her first name and kept her last as her middle. I carry her married name and similar to her, I go by my middle (which would be her last!)
Daisy says
FABRIC ME!
It might be hard to figure out, but I was named after a type of flower. :D
Erika says
Fabric Me!
There is no special meaning. It was actually my parent’s second choice, I was supposed to be Jessica, and I’m so glad they didnt!
Courtney says
Fabric me!
My parents let my grandmother name me, so that makes my name special. Of course, it turned out to be one of the popular names in the 80’s…
Pam Fisher says
“FABRIC ME!”
Pamela was a very common name when I was born in the late 1950s. I never asked why they chose it. I do know that I was almost Deborah. When I was little my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins on my Dads side all called me Pammie Sue. I hated it!! Still to this day I will be inevitably called Pammie by some well meaning relative.
Janelle @ Emmaline says
My name has no special meaning other than it rhymes with my sister’s name, Michelle. My grandmother chose it. Janelle
Jennifer says
FABRIC ME! I have one of the most common girls’ names of my generation and yet my mother, who was newly arrived from Holland had never heard it before and thought it was so original! Little did she know that every other mum in 1970 was going to pick the same name!
Marcelle says
FABRIC ME!
No big significance behind my first name, but my parents each had a sister named Dianne, so that’s my middle name.
Stephanie says
Fabric Me:)
My middle name, Lorene, is for my great-grandmother whom both my parents loved. Not a middle name any other kids had so that was always different.
Kate K. says
FABRIC ME!! My name, Kate, means pure and blessed!
Erika says
FABRIC ME! My first name is from my mom’s last name and my middle name is my mom’s and great aunt’s
Maggie says
FABRIC ME!
Before I was born, my parents had narrowed it down to two names: Margaret or Emily. They couldn’t decide, and eventually my great-grandmother said to them “You have to name her Margaret. I knew an Emily once and I HATED her!”
So I’m Margaret (Maggie), all because there was some lady that my great grandmother did not get along with. Amusingly enough, my college roommate/best friend’s name is Emily, and her parents almost named her Margaret!
Anaïs R says
FABRIC ME!!!
Anaïs is a French name (like me!) that my Mom loved. Nothing special behind picking it, but I love to see English-speakers struggle with it! So far, I’ve been called Eenis, something that sounds like “a niece”, and more… So now I introduce myself as Anaïs, but if people ask me to repeat more than 2 times I’ll tell them to call me Ana ;) (It’s really pronounced Ana+iss)
Hannah C says
FABRIC ME! No meaning behind my name; my father just liked it!
Anna's Mama says
FABRIC ME!
Eh, my name, which is Jennifer, was just really popular at the time. And for the following 15 years.
Sarah Jane says
FABRIC ME!
As a kid, I wished that there was a great name to go with my story, but alas there is not. They just said, “We always knew you’d be a Sarah Jane.” I have since asked my mom what she’d name me if she knew who I’d be as an adult and she said Penelope. Way different from Sarah, but I like it.
Sara says
Fabric me! I am named after my grandmother :)
Janet S. says
Fabric Me Please!
I am named after my mom’s late sister and have carried the name with pride. :)
Carrie says
FABRIC ME!
Carrie Elizabeth: I was named after both of my grandmothers’ first names. Everyone called Carrie, ‘Chickie’. I love my name!
Fatime says
FABRIC ME!
Fatime is a version of the ancient Arabic name Fatima, meaning: Captivating; Daughter of the Prophet Muhammad; one of four perfect women mentioned in the Koran. This is a popular name among Portuguese and Spanish Catholics too, after the Marian apparition in 1917 in the town of Fátima, Portugal.
As soon as my parents found out I’m on my way, they decided I must be a girl (had to obey, you simply cannot say no to them), and my name will be Fatime (they knew none of the above – Dad heard this name mentioned in a radio interview with his favorite band). As for how I felt about my name as a child – well, it was so very rare some of my teachers claimed its not an existing name at all, and tried to call me by alternatives they considered “right” (which I always strictly rejected):D. I do not remember ever wanting any other name at all!
Laura says
Fabric me!
My name harks from general hospital – remember Luke & Laura?
Stephanie says
FABRIC ME!
My name came from a little girl that lived on my parents’ street that they both really thought was darling.
Danielle says
Fabric Me!
I was named after a family friend. After I was born and the papers were filled out my Dad wished they would have gone with Danelle because it flows better than Danielle.
Laura says
FABRIC ME!! I’m actually named from a character in the movie Dr. Zhivago, Lara (my parent’s favorite movie). But my mom was scared people would call me Lay-ra, so she went with the more American friendly spelling of Laura. Still wish she had done Lara though…it’s just cooler…
Adrienne says
“FABRIC ME! I think my parents picked my name simply because they liked it. They definitely didn’t realize (even though we live in Philly) that I would here “Yo, Adrienne!” for my entire life.
Teegan says
FABRIC ME!
My name is from Doctor Who. Mum hated the character Tegan but loved the name so decided long before I was born that she’d name her child Tegan. However, for some unknown reason she wrote Teegan on the birth certificate, not Tegan and regretted it. Especially once she saw that no one knew how to spell my name. I wanted a ‘normal’ name all throughout my childhood because I was sick of every birthday invitation and christmas card spelling my name wrong (e.g. Theighan). Luckily I love my name now, it’s slightly unique without being outlandish!
