After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Alison says
FABRIC ME!
My parents like to say that they “created” my name from two relatives “Alice” and “Lawson” but I’m not sure why they think they invented the name Alison – it’s pretty common. We have a saying in my family, though… “never let the truth get in the way of a good story” and I think this story might be a perfect example…
Jessica says
FABRIC ME!
There is no real reason why my parents went with my name, other than they liked it. My middle name is the same as my mom’s middle name, though. Mae.
Kate says
FABRIC ME! I am named after my grandmother’s aunt.
Carrie says
Fabric Me! Named after a great grandmother, but missed out on the super old school middle name she had (Ada). Totally a fun name today, but in the 90’s I was super relieved not to have it. How funny how our opinions change!
Jacki says
FABRIC ME!Named after my mother and grandmother.
Audrey says
FABRIC ME!!! My name is Audrey, one letter different than my father’s name, Aubrey. Easy peasy.
Amber says
Fabric me!!
Amber means golden. :)
Matilda says
Fabric me!
My parents lived in a ski town and in the winter they would rent out their basement to Aussie’s in town to work at the ski reosrts for the season. One Aussie would come home from the bars singing Waltzing Matilda and then I waltzed right into the world! :)
Elizabeth Nicole says
Fabric me! name after my grandmother.
Traci says
Fabric Me!
My first name was just one my parents liked. My middle name is Lynn, which is a derivative of Linda, which was my Mom’s name. I gave my oldest daughter the same middle name too. Thought is would be a cool tradition to carry the middle name on, so now I just have to hope that maybe my daughter will do the same! :-)
Ash @ HumberHomeProject says
Fabric Me!!
I was supposed to be named “Samantha” but a couple weeks before I was born, my parents’ best friends got a dog and named her Samantha and they didn’t want me to share my name with a dog. haha
While in the hospital, my mom was watching Happy Days, and Fonzie’s girlfriend was apparently named “Ashley”… and so it stuck.
I always wished I had been “Sam” though. It just felt cooler than “Ashley”
Kelly R says
FABRIC ME!
My name on my birth certificate is Kelly Corrine, my name is supposed to be Kelly Corinne. My mom spelled it wrong after au-natural labor and delivery! That is her excuse anyway!
Brandyn says
Fabric Me! People who’ve seen my name but not my face are surprise to find out I’m a girl. Even with the confusion I like my name. Plus I’m a 6 ft engineer who loves sports so a super girly name wouldn’t fit me at all.
Nari says
FABRIC ME!
My name means lily in Korean, it’s not a common name in Korea and I must be the only person in New Zealand with this name!
My parents just liked the name :)
Michael Ann says
FABRIC ME! I have an uncle named Michael and an aunt named Ann, so my grandmother combined the two and named me Michael Ann. I have always loved my name except for a brief rebellious period when I was in the third grade… I had three friends named Ashley and wanted to be just like them! :)
Andrea says
FABRIC ME!! I’m named after my Dad who is Andrew.
Emma says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after my mom’s grandmother, who in the late 1800s ran a small farm in a dangerous part of the country. I hope I have inherited some of her strength and tenacity!
Aisling says
Fabric Me!
My name was given to me by my mom’s best friend, after not having a name for 2 weeks!
It’s pronounced “Ash-ling” and is Gaelic for Fairy Dream

FABRIC ME! I was named after Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth’s sister.
Andrea says
Fabric Me! I always kind of wished my name were different although I’m not sure what I would want it to be.
Gretchen says
Fabric Me! :) Something about Super Gretch. I hated my name growing up and always wished it was something different. My husband hated my name until he met me. I can live with my name now; it’s mine.
Anne says
FABRIC ME! My first name means “grace” and my middle name “pure” – so I’m pretty happy with my parents choice!
Courtney F. says
FABRIC ME!
My mom had a lot of awful names she liked for me: Blair, Kirby, and worst of all Brooke (not bad in itself, but when your last name is ____brook, that’s just asking to be teased!). She ended up having an emergency C-section, and while she was still loopy from the anesthetic, she says “How about Courtney?” My dad had the nurse write it down before she could come around and change her mind. :)
Erin says
Fabric Me!
Erin is the poetic name for Ireland
Corrie says
FABRIC ME!
My full name is Corrine (pronounced “kor-IN”) but my parents have called me Corrie since birth. People rarely pronounce my full name properly, so I’m glad to have a substitute. Regardless, no one can spell my full name, short name or last name correctly, so it’s pretty much a wash.
Stacy says
FABRIC ME!
My parents just liked the name Stacy, so that’s all there is to it. But my middle name is Renee (after my mom’s middle name), which means “reborn” and Stacy mean “resurrection.” I don’t think my parents knew that when they named me, but it’s kinda cool that both my names have the same meaning. :-)
Mary says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my two aunt Marys. I don’t know why and it’s a bit confusing at a family function when someone yells,
“Mary!” and multiple people turn!
Sarah says
“FABRIC ME!”
My name came from my mother’s family. It belonged to a Great, Great on my grandfather’s side. So in Southern tradition, my middle name is actually a last name and boy did I get teased as a kid. I always wanted my little sister’s name. It sounded so much cooler than mine. I like it so much that I tend to use her full name instead of her nickname when I talk to her. (It was also shared with a character on Lost) Her middle name is also a last name and was a close family friend, but it just sounds cooler!
Ali says
Fabric me!
Jodie Foster guest starred on Kung Fu in 1973 and her character’s name was “Alethea.” My parents loved the name and when I popped out a year later, it became my name too!
Kellie says
Fabric me! My parents thought it was super unique but did not watch Charlie’s Angels. They got a tiny bit creative with the spelling, though.
Megan says
Fabric Me!
No significance to the name, but I know it wasn’t my Dad’s first choice!
Sarah says
Fabric me!! My name doesn’t have any special meaning, it was just very very popular in the 80’s. my parents are big Fleetwood Mac fans, and I’m glad they didn’t go with their first choice, which was Rhiannon. No offence meant to any Rhiannons, it really wouldn’t suit me!
Ashley P says
FABRIC ME!!
My name is Ashley and I was the only one I knew growing up – who would have known that fifteen years later the Olsen twins would come along and ruin everything. :)
Cady says
FABRIC ME! Cady was my great grandmothers name and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (women’s rights/voting activist in the 1800’s) was a distant relative of mine. I like it now but as a kid was bummed that there were no bike license plates or personalized pencils with my name on them!
Kara J says
FABRIC ME!! My first name, Kara, was just a name my parents really liked. And I love it. Growing up, I was the only Kara in my classes. Middle name, Beth – kinda named after my dad’s cousin.
Erika says
Fabric me!
lindsay says
FABRIC ME! ‘Lindsay’ is a common last name in Great Britain, I think…and I had a poster once that said ‘Lindsay’ meant ‘from the linden by the sea…?
Carrie Ralston says
FABRIC ME!
Nothing special or interesting about my name
Nicole Proceviat says
FABRIC ME!!!
My first name was actually chosen by my Dad. He grew up in Scotland, and when he was little, there was a foreign exchange student in his class from France and he absolutely adored her – her name was Nicole. :)
Monika says
FABRIC ME! “Monika” in honor of our German heritage.
Senora H-B says
FABRIC ME!
AE says
FABRIC ME!!!!
What’s behind my name? Well I go by initials. A.E. I am the third of this given name and people always want to know what they stand for and I never tell them….it’s just my name!! :)
Jaimie says
FABRIC ME! My name means “I love” in french. My parents thought the extra “i” would make the name more feminine… but really it just makes it difficult for everyone to spell!
Nicole says
Fabric me! Funny story behind my name. My parents liked the name Nikki so they named me Nicole intending to use the nick-name Nikki… but never did. No one has every called me Nikki. Some friends call me Nic but that’s about it.
Anne says
FABRIC ME!
My name was almost Jamie Sommers, but then that was the Bionic Woman’s name at the time, so I ended up with Anne.
Kelli says
FABRIC ME!
I’m the second of three kids, and one of many K’s my family has had over the years (including pets). In all we’re: Kristi, Kelli, Kevin, KC, Kooki, Kalli, Katarina, and Kozmo.
But back before the K’s got out of control, I got my name because my dad liked it and it was “different at the time.” It’s my name, so of course I love it, but I’m always happy that my parents spelled it a bit different… even if I can’t ever find a personalized knick-knack at gift shops!
Hannah says
Fabric me! Hannah is an old family name, and means ‘grace’, which ironically is my younger sister’s name.
Ashley R says
Fabric me!
No special meaning for my name–just one my mom liked ;)
Nicole says
FABRIC ME!
My parents each grew up with names they thought were “weird”, so they were determined to give me a name that was “nice, common and unremarkable”. It was the 80’s, they chose Nicole. Now that I’m grown up I really wish they’d gone with my second name, which is Anne. My dad agrees – I’m more an old-fashioned Anne than a modern Nicole!
Sara says
FABRIC ME!!
I’ve always liked the fact that my name is “Sara without an h.”
