After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Maja says
Fabric me!
My name was the first one both of my parents agreed on. In Croatian it doesn’t have any meaning (and it’s exceedingly common), but in Greek mythology Maia is the mother of Hermes, and in Sanskrit Maya means an illusion.
Shelley says
“FABRIC ME!”
Amelia S. says
FABRIC ME! I’m named after my great-grandma. Before I was born, my parents disagreed with each other as to how to spell my name, but my mom held out and after labor, my dad caved.
Mandi says
FABRIC ME!
My first name has no real significance, but my middle name is after one of my great aunts who died when she was 4-5 years old.
Julia says
My name means “youthful spirit” and it’s not really a family name – my parent just like it! My middle name, Lowe, is my paternal great-grandmother’s maiden name and unfortunately people started calling me “J. Lowe” in middle school. That was the only time I wish I had a different name!
emma says
FABRIC ME!!
I’m named Emma because my mom wanted an uncommon name. There were very few Emma’s my age. And then Rachel Greene decided to name her baby Emma and there are endless little Emmas! Working in a kids store was interesting!
Kayla says
FABRIC ME!
My name comes from my grandmother’s maiden name.
Valentine says
Ah, loaded question. My name is Valentine, yes like Valentine’s day, yes I have to repeat it and explain it constantly for some reason. My parents named me after my paternal grandfather Valentin. Nurses wrote my name incorrectly with an ‘e’ at the end and the rest is history. For a long time I wished I had a different name but I’ve come to like it. We even gave our son Valentine as his middle name.
conny says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after the state of my birth. I got off easy–my parents had a friend whose daughter was born in Tennesee, Tenny.
Ramona says
FABRIC ME!
My mom picked my name out of a baby name book. She just liked it and I have always loved it :)
JMay says
FABRIC ME! My nickname, JMay, is the phonetic combination of my first and last names.
Robin @ our semi organic life says
FABRIC ME!
nothing special with my name… other than it’s a bird!
Kate says
Fabric me! Not sure why my parents picked my first name, but my middle name is my Grandmother’s first name. It’s a bit of an old lady name, so people always comment on it. I used to be embarrassed about it when I was younger but now I think it’s cool that it connects to my family. Plus I feel like my grandma favors me a bit over my cousins and siblings because of it!
Kim says
FABRIC ME!!
My adopted, older sister named me, my parents thought it would be a fun way for her to get excited about a younger sister. :)
Lesley says
Fabric Me! No realy meaning other than my parents were watching 60 minutes and liked the way Lesley Stahl spelled her name
Karen Lindauer says
FABRIC ME!
My parents were going to name me Kristin until my mom saw me & changed her mind to Karen. She just said that I “looked like a Karen”!
Ginger says
FABRIC ME!
My initials are GEG. My dad wanted my middle name to be Alicia but my mom vetoed the initials GAG.
Kasey says
My dad’s initials are K.C., so my name became Kasey. And, they weren’t sure if I would be a boy or girl, so it could be used either way.
Christy says
FABRIC ME! I’m a Christmas baby, brought home from the hospital on Christmas Eve, so Mom thought Christin would be appropriate. I love my name, though I’ve always gone by Christy. (no way am I a “Kristi-with-an-i”)
Chelsea says
FABRIC ME!
My first name, Chelsea, came from a verse in a Rolling Stones’ song befittingly titled, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. My middle name, Clarise, is in honor of my grandmother, who owned the name long before The Silence of the Lambs. Take that, Jodie Foster.
Anja says
FABRIC ME!!!
My first name is Anja (pronounced ‘ahn-ya’) – everyone says it is beautiful, so I’ve grown to love it even though growing up (and still now) it can be bothersome that no one knows how to pronounce it. My mom and dad fought over whether to spell it the “German way” with a ‘j’ or the “American way” with a ‘y’… the ladies (my mom and grandmother) won, and the more difficult ‘j’ spelling was it!
Betsy C says
Fabric me!
I’m named after my mom’s best friend growing up. So no, I don’t have any idea how people get “Betsy” from “Elizabeth”.
ashley says
Fabric Me! I think my name means tree, which is pretty lame.
Sara says
Fabric me please!
My name only meant “bo-ring” when I was a kid. I always wished for some awesome name like Summer. What a weirdo.
Stacy says
FABRIC ME!
My parents actually couldn’t agree what to name me so I was nameless for a few days. I was referred to as “Baby Ouellette” which was my maiden. I guess 9 months wasn’t enough time to decide! ;)
Melissa Powell says
FABRIC ME!
My name means Honey Bee in Greek. My mum had always wanted a daughter named Melissa :)
Kristen says
FABRIC ME!! My middle name is Kay, after my moms best friend who assisted in my delivery. We ended up living three states away from our home town, ten minutes apart, and her teenage daughter babysits my little girls.
Sarah says
Sarah means “princess”, but what I like is that my boyfriend’s name, Andrew, means “king”. The princess and the king! aww..
Annabelvita says
FABRIC ME! My mum had a distant cousin called Annabel and when I was born she decided it suited me!
Lelia says
FABRIC ME! I was named after my great grandmother!
Noelle says
Fabric me!! I was born in December so I got a Christmas-y name!
Marissa says
FABRIC ME!
Marissa (like Mary) means “of the sea.” My parents heard it at my aunt’s wedding and liked it so much, they used it for my name.
Abigail says
FABRIC ME!
Abigail means source of joy!
Alyssa says
FABRIC ME!!
My parents liked Allison but they didn’t like how it sounded with my last name so they decided on Alyssa. No middle name though and that always made me sad until I got married and my maiden name became my middle name!
Brandy says
FABRIC ME!
I was really named by my older siblings. I am the youngest of 4 and I have two older sisters and an older brother. My family figured I would be a boy since they already had 2 girls and 1 boy….great logic, right? This was before the days of finding out the gender ahead of time. Well, I came along and surprised everyone by being a girl and my family was less than prepared:) They planned on calling me “Brandon” so my sisters decided that I should be “Brandy” instead. My grandma was not too pleased by the name choice at first but eventually came around!
Lucy says
Fabric me! I was named after my maternal grandmother. And, yes, it’s just Lucy, not Lucille or Lucinda or Lucifer…
Deb D. says
FABRIC ME! Deborah means “bee” in Hebrew, but I’m pretty sure that has nothing to do with why my parents picked it. I think it was just popular in the early 70s…. definitely don’t hear of any little girls named Deborah these days!!
Meg says
Fabric ME!
My Grandma wanted my parents to name me after her mother Osmunda (Norwegian) and when she found out that they named me Megan she said, “That isn’t even a name!” I guess Megan wasn’t very popular in the early 80’s in the midwest. :)
Linda says
FABRIC ME!
My mom says she just liked the name, and despite having a family friend (who is, shall we say, a very interesting individual) with the same name, that’s what they chose. My middle name is the same as hers, and is also a family middle name. It’s my daughter’s middle name now, too.
Heidi says
Fabric Me!
I was named after my moms best friend growing up. They dont even talk anymore… :/ LOL For some reason, a lot of people seem to have dogs named Heidi, so I hated it as a kid. I wanted to be named Summer because it sounded so happy! :D But I LOVE my name now!
Erin says
Fabric me! My name means Ireland, but I’m not Irish haha my mom just liked it!
Meghan T says
FABRIC ME! Pretty Please!!! I don’t think there is any special meaning behind my name. My parents just liked it and liked the spelling so there ya go!
Karen C. says
FABRIC ME!
My first name is one that both of my parents liked, but my middle name is for my grandmother!
Eldoé says
Fabric me!
My name doesn’t have any meaning but there is a sweet story about my youger sister’s name.
My mother and my aunt were pregnant at the same time. A few days before going into labor, they asked my aunt and uncle how they would name the baby. It was actually the same name as they wanted to call their unborn baby.
The babies were in act two girls who would have had the same name and surname.
Jackie says
FABRIC ME!
My parents tell me it’s just a coincidence, but I don’t believe them. The #1 song when I was born is “Jack & Dianne” by John Cougar Mellencamp. My name is Jacqueline Dianne. I seriously doubt this was an accident.
Julia says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Julia. My mother’s name is Julia. My grandfather is Julian. His mother was Julia. And on and on it goes. So when it came time for me to have a child, the pressure was on. Should I honor or break family tradition? I found a good compromise. My daughter’s name…Juliet.
Laurena says
FABRIC ME!!
My parents used their names to make mine, Laurena Marie (my father’s name is Lawrence, Mom is Mary). For some reason my older brother wasn’t named after anyone. Guess I’m the lucky one! :P
Vanessa says
FABRIC Me! Vanessa means butterfly in Greek. My parents liked Vanessa Redgrave. I love my name. My initials also make up my parents monogram. The V from my mom and the J (middle name) from my father. So it was a great way to pass on some monogrammed towels…until I got married and changed my last name of course. = )
Patty says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Patricia and I’m named after my grandmother. I don’t really like it. I’d much prefer to be named Danielle. :)
Joni says
Fabric me!
My name is my aunt’s. It is spelled with an “i” because my mom spells her name with an “i”. Whenever I would try to spell it “cute” in elementary school with an “ie” my mom would say “We don’t spell like that in this family.”
