After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Devin says
FABRIC ME!
I was named for the character Devon on Knight Rider (true story), it was all my Dad’s doing, but my Mom got her way on spelling.
Tammie K. says
FABRIC ME! please!! I have a fabric obsession!! Tammie—My sister and my aunt named me after the “Tammy and the Bachelor” movie starring Debbie Reynolds. I was supposed to be a boy though and my dad lost a case of beer. That still makes me laugh.
lauren says
Fabric me!
I grew up in the West and thought my name was pretty unique until I went to college on the East Coast. There are so many Laurens over there! Grr!
Haley says
FABRIC ME! My name is just a name that my parents liked. Nothing super special, but I like it.
Alison Detwiler says
Fabric me! My middle name was my great aunt catherine’s maiden name. My parents found out after the fact I was born on the same day she died (several years prior). Guess it was meant to be!
Sarah M. says
Fabric Me!
angie says
FABRIC ME! Nothing deep – my mom says she just liked the name. :)
Samantha says
FABRIC ME!!!! As for my name…I think it was just a name my mom really liked. Of course, everyone assumed it was from the Bewitched TV show. If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me to twitch my nose, I’d be rich!
Meg Palmer says
Fabric me!!
My name and my brothers name mean the same thing in Gaelic. We are boy/girl twins just like Heather and her brother!
My least favorite question is – are you identical?? Still get asked that
Megan says
FABRIC ME!
Megan means pearl. My mom picked out my name, it was the same as the Governor’s daughter and she thought that she was a good person.
Holly c says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Holly because I was due on Christmas day. I was 3 days late thankfully. My family has a tradition where our names have a “y” or the “ie” sound. I can’t really imagine my name being anything else.
Sophie says
FABRIC ME!
My name doesn’t have family heritage or anything like that, just one that my folks liked.
It means ‘Wisdom’ though, which I think is pretty nice. There are worse meanings to a name!
connie says
Fabric me! I have always hated my name. Constance Janene. I go by Connie. I was named after my moms two best friends…Connie and Janene. I am the 6th of 7 kids so I think my parents were running out of options.
Christine says
FABRIC ME!
Christine was the only name my parents could agree on. My dad wanted to spell it with a K, my mom wanted to spell it with a Ch. In the end my dad said the Ch was fine since my mom did all the hard work. Ya know, carrying and birthing an almost 9 pound baby :)
Jessica F. says
FABRIC ME!
My name is after my Mom’s best friend. :)
Sarah says
Fabric me!!! My dad picked my name because he though it would be unique. I guess so did every other parent in the 80s. I must have gone to school with at least 8 other Sarahs!!
Brittany says
Fabric Me!
In the literal sense, my name means “from Britain” and is also a French province (Bretagne); however, that’s not at all how/why I got my name. My sisters, who were 8 and 10 at the time, got to choose between Brittany Jo and Emily Else. Else (our great-grandmother’s name) reminded them too much of Elsie the cow (from Borden milk or something). BUT Alvin’s (yes, the Chipmunk) girlfriend’s name was, you guessed it, Brittany. The rest is history.
Jenn says
fabric me !
Stephanie Riggin says
FABRIC ME!
My name Stephanie and although it is common, it comes from the combinations of my paternal great-grandparents Stephen and Annie. Stephen was an early DIYer and built his entire house on the hillside in Cannonsburg, PA!
tiffany says
FABRIC ME
hahahahahahaha, i love this story. I am the youngest of 4. Two older sisters, then my brother. My Mom thought for sure I was a boy, another son to play with her other boy. Two girls, two boys, what a perfect dream? She was so set she only picked a boy’s name – Timothy.
What a surprise I was so she named me Tiffany…similar to Tim and I have been surprising her ever since…LOL
Melanie says
FABRIC ME!
So…named from Melanie in Gone With the Wind (although I am definitely more like a Scarlett than a Melly). But my middle name (Rose) was picked out for me by my two older brothers when I was born so it holds a special place in my heart. Love your blog. But my wallet doesn’t…
Tara says
FABRIC ME!
I get asked all. the. time if my parents picked my name from Gone With the Wind. Answer: I don’t think so, but you’ll have to ask my aunt.
My mother was convinced she was having a boy — no ultrasound evidence, just a bunch of old women on the street telling her so based on how she was carrying the pregnancy. When – surprise – I was a girl, she was shocked and without name ideas. And when the time came to sign the birth certificate and I was still name-less, my aunt was in the room and came up with “Tara” on the spot.
Hannah says
FABRIC ME!
My mom always said a little birdy told her to name me Hannah, after the Hannah in the bible. I love my name and wouldn’t dream of changing it!
Sarah m says
FABRIC ME! My name is Sarah and the meaning is “Princess”, which is pretty perfect, considering I married a guy named Stefan, meaning “crowned”. :)
Sarah M
Lesley says
Fabric Me!
I’m actually named after my grandfather. I have his middle name w/ a small spelling change to the more “feminine” spelling.
Katie says
FABRIC ME!! My name is Katie, really Katherine, after “Momma Kate”, my great-grandmother. Almost everyone in my generation of cousins (and the next) has a Katherine snuck somewhere in their name, it’s definitely a Southern thing :) I named my daughter after my mom to continue the tradition, even though I was born and raised a total Yankee, hee hee.
Kate says
FABRIC ME!
My parents wanted a name that didn’t have a nickname. The only downside is that I’m always asked if Kate is short for Katherine or Kaitlin.
BTW, I’m making curtains out of the yellow and white fabric in the top left corner of your picture and I LOVE it!!
Olivia K says
FABRIC ME! I was named after Olivia D’havilland from gone with the wind. My parents use to say they should have named me Scarlett when I acted up.
Jayme says
FABRIC ME! My dad didn’t have much say in naming us kids, his were all too strange :) My mom wanted Jamie but a more feminine spelling; she thought Jay and Me were the obvious way to sound it out. I like that it’s spelled different than most who are named Jamie or Jaime so I’ll keep it!
Paulette Smith says
FABRIC ME! My name means “little” and I am short. My Dad named me after a friends child because he liked the name and there was a movie star at that time named Paulette Goddard. I’ve never liked the name very much because people always got it wrong…”Pauline?”…”Polly?”…” Paula?” It was embarrassing because I was shy and hated attention in new situations. ????I always wanted a more conventional name like Debbie or Barbara or Linda. This give-a-way is awesome! I need to make drapes and pillow covers!!!
Tara M. says
FABRIC ME! A character on my mother’s favorite soap opera was named Tara – not very deep, but I like the name anyway :)
Gina says
FABRIC ME!
I’m adopted and my (adoptive) parents came up with my name while they were waiting for their adoption lawyer to bring me home from the hospital. The song “Gina” by Ritchie Valens was playing on the oldies station while they were waiting for me to arrive and they decided it’s what they wanted to name me.
Kim Early says
“FABRIC ME!” I don’t think there was a reason and I like my name even though there are a lot of Kims.
Kelsey Jones says
FABRIC ME! My mom picked the name Kelsey because a girl in her early childhood class has it. I like it, so it’s all good!
Jennifer says
FABRIC ME!
My eldest sister named me!
AshleyM says
My mother picked a different name and then right before I was born, my grandma selected this one and on impulse, my mom agreed. My dad got no say! Ha!
David says
“FABRIC ME!”
Nothing special about my name…… but the kids in the hall put out a song “These are the Daves I know”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF1chLj1fro
enjoy!
Kathleen says
Fabric me! I had and older sister Colleen and one named Maureen so my parents were going for the een thing. I never wanted to be called Kathy growing up no matter how much my teachers and friends tried. I still go by Kathleen to this day.
Lauren says
FABRIC ME…… my husband and i named our daughter Paisley after the town in Scotland my mom was born in
Rebecca says
FABRIC ME! A shorter version of my name (Becca) was suggested by my aunt, and my parents went with the lengthened one. I like it because there are so many nicknames that have come out of it. I prefer the lesser formality. :)
Suzy B says
Fabric me! Suzy was nickname because there were 3 Susan’s in my grade…..name stuck!!
Amy says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after my great grandmother, Geneva Amy (changed to Amy Jennifer for me).
Jennifer Carpel says
FABRIC ME!!
no special meaning….luck for me it was the most popular girls name at the time.
AnnotatedLA says
FABRIC ME! My name is Lauren and I was named after Lauren Hutton because my parents thought she was beautiful. Comically, when my adult teeth came in, I had a space between them too.
Kristin says
FABRIC ME! My parents named me after Kristin on the TV Show Dallas. However, when mentioning this to my boyfriend he said that she was a B word on the show! :(
Arlene says
Fabric Me! My first name – Arlene – was my mother’s middle name but there is no family history behind it.
AshleyM says
Also, FABRIC ME! Oops!
Arlene says
Fabric Me! You don’t see many women under the age of 85 named Arlene so being 27 people are often surprised when they find out my name, but I love it. My first name came from my Mom’s Mom, she was killed by a drunk driver when my Mom was a little girl. My middle name, Starr, is my Dad’s Moms maiden name. There were no boys to carry on the name so they gave it to me to carry on. I love that I have a part of both of my Grandmothers!
Harmony Quiroz says
Fabric Me! My name is Harmony and everyone always asks how I got the name but the truth is one of my mom’s friend’s had a boy so my mom stole the name right out from under her :)
Tanya says
FABRIC ME!
My mom said my paternal grandmother suggested my name. I like to joke that I’m named after one of my mom’s favorite country singers, Tonya Tucker, she just spelled it wrong. ;)
