After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Meg says
Fabric Me!
All I can say is that I was almost named Penelope. I am happy with Megan.
:)
Jo Barker says
FABRIC ME! I think my parents originally thought I was going to be a boy, so they had the name Joseph picked out…But since I was a girl, they called me Johanna. I still go by Jo :)
Kelly says
Fabric me!!
I was named after the dog that lived upstairs. All the women in my mom’s office were pregnant at the same time and giving their daughters Irish names. My mom planned to name me Kathleen after my grandmother, but two other women gave their daughters that name and my mom wanted something different. She couldn’t think of anything until she heard the upstairs neighbors calling their dog. That’s where I got the name, Kelly.
Ashley says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name is after my grandmother but my first name was just something my parents liked.
Becca says
Fabric Me!!! I was going to be named Amanda, but a week before I was born, my parents met a family with a daughter named Becca. They loved it and changed my name. It worked out well because my brother married an Amanda, so it is nice that we have different names!
Samantha says
FABRIC ME!!! My original name was too difficult of the Western culture. I picked my own name.
Janet Lopes says
FABRIC ME!
I don’t think there is a story behind my name – but it’s a rare one for a 30-year old (it’s always someone’s grandmother’s name!), and I’ve always appreciated that!
Erica says
Fabric Me!
My parents used to come home for lunch in high school and watch “All My Children” with my grandmother. They loved the character Erica Kane, and 10 years later, that’s what they named me!
Marisela says
FABRIC ME!
I love my name. It means queen of the sea. I was named that because as soon as my mom heard it she loved it. At the time there was a really popular latin pop singer with that name and it just stuck with her and she named me. =)
Alleene Smith says
FABRIC ME! I was named after my paternal grandmother. I was the 6th out of 7 granddaughters, and it had to be done sooner or later. I’ve never liked it (nobody can pronounce it or spell it correctly), and I made sure that both of my children had “normal” names!
Erin Schwille says
FABRIC ME! In 9th grade, I was bored with ‘Erin,’ so spelled my name Aryn on all of my papers, tests, etc. The teachers actually believed I was ‘Aryn’ and were correcting student lists, etc. with my made up spelling.
Jamie says
“FABRIC ME”
I was named after my grandmother Amy. They wanted a slight variation, so they added a “J” in the front of her name and changed the spelling.
Kiersten says
FABRIC ME!
My name was going to be Mackenzie, but sometime during my mom’s pregnancy it occurred to my parents that if I were fat my nickname might be “big Mac.” Instead, I am a healthy weight and my name is Kiersten (and Big Macs gross me out)!
Meghan N says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after a character in a book my mom was reading when she was pregnant with me- added a H in the middle to make it Irish. If I was a boy, I was going to be Ryan.
Amy says
Fabric me! My middle name, Louise, was my mothers!
Allyson says
FABRIC ME!
The story of my name is a bit complicated..I didn’t even learn it until my 18th birthday! You see, my mom loved the name “Allison” and my dad was fine with it as long as he could decide how to spell it. He went with “Allyson.” On my 18th birthday, he told me why. Along with my middle name (Louise, a family name) I have every vowel, including the “sometimes y” in my name!
Kelli says
FABRIC ME! My name means “lover of free fabric.” Okay, obviously that isn’t true; I don’t really know what it means!
Kit Darling says
Fabric ME! My full name is Katherine, but my parents planned on calling me Kit the entire time…the crazy thing about it was there was a nurse who helped deliver me who was also named Kit!
Kate says
FABRIC ME! I’m my parents’ third daughter, and both of my sisters were already named after my grandmothers, so… my name is just a name that my parents thought sounded nice. Boring!
Caitie says
FABRIC ME!!!
Caitlin (Caitie) means Pure.
My Mom wanted to call me Ashley, my Dad said no way. Thank GOD!So I ended up Caitlin with a C, which was very different in 1989! ;)
Shawna says
Fabric Me! I was just on this website last night,
My grandma picked out my name. As far as wanting a different one, I wanted to be called Sara in the second grade so I could find stuff with my name on it. Not many name plates or Lisa Frank stuff with Shawna in the 80’s.
Joy says
FABRIC ME!
My name is supposed to be “Christine Joy”, but my mom thought it was too long so she just dropped the Christine and so I was named just “JOY”.
Erin Curtis says
FABRIC ME!
Kara says
FABRIC ME
Joann says
FABRIC ME!
My first name (Marjorie)is after my maternal grandmother. She died when I was just a baby so it’s pretty special to me and my mother especially. Who cares that only me and 80 year women have this first name! Maybe it’ll make a comeback someday. :)
Sara says
FABRIC ME!
My parents thought it was unique. I think I was one of four Sara(h)’s in my middle school classes.
Heather W says
FABRIC ME!!!! My middle name, Lynn, isn’t unique and it’s actually my older sisters middle name too. She is 10 years older than me and my dad sort of forgot and gave me the same middle name. Dad hasn’t lived that one down yet!! Haha!
Katelin says
FABRIC ME! I think there were about a gazillion girls with some sort of form of my name born in the late 80’s. I’m thankful my parents went with a simple, phonetic spelling of my name, to make it stand out. My parents tell me I was almost named Skylar. I always wonder if I would be the same person if I had a different name…
Kristen says
FABRIC ME!
Kristen was the only thing they could agree on- and was super trendy at time in 80s!
jill says
fabric me!
Bridget says
FABRIC ME!!
My parents just liked the name…no special meaning.
Colleen says
Fabric Me!
My name means girl in Gaelic. My mom wanted to name me Mildred, but my dad saved me from that fate. I’ve always been grateful for that!
Courtney L. says
FABRIC ME!
I’ve always been a bit indifferent to my name, when I was little I thought it was clever to put “quartknee” on my school papers. My favorite story about my name is when my father called my mother’s parents to tell them I was born. Upon hearing my name, my grandmother said “Oh. Well, we’ll love her anyway!” LOL
Melissa says
“FABRIC ME!” no special name behind my name, that my Parents chose. But a cool coincidence about my name: it means honey bee in Greek : ) Pretty cool…since you guys have a special meaning for the bee : )
Carolyn says
FABRIC ME!
I’m proud to be named after my grandma.
Veera says
FABRIC ME!
My name has two meanings: truth and faith. My granny used to say that they’re the same thing… :)
I’d love to get new curtains for our living room, and maybe even try sewing a sofa cover and some pillows!
FABRIC ME says
My parents couldn’t decide what to call me so my older sister named me!
Lacy says
Fabric Me!
Suzanne says
FABRIC ME! I have no idea why my name was chosen but it means “A lily”. I like my name and I wouldn’t change it because they’re aren’t a ton of Suzanne’s running around!
Jennifer says
Fabric Me.
My mom thought she had come up with an unusual name (Jennifer). She didn’t realize it was the most popular girl name of the seventies.
Morgan says
FABRIC ME!
Melissa W. says
FABRIC ME!
My name has a boring story. Melissa is just a name my mom liked at the time she was pregnant with me. I do not really care for my name. I cannot think of a name I would rather have though! Many people today, name their children “trendy” names. I tried to stay away from “trendy” when choosing names for our children. Amelia’, Henry, and Hudson are not-so-trendy.
I would LOVE new fabric!
Melissa
Brandy says
Fabric Me!
I was named after “Brandy, what a fine girl. What a good wife you will be.” I’m not kidding. I always thought it sounded like an adult entertainer. Also, my parents 2nd choice was Candace. Got to love the 80s.
I have no curtains in my house. This would be awesome. Wait, that’s not true. I have those paper accordion blinds. Do they count? I don’t think they should count.
Kelly says
Fabric Me! I am the oldest of 3 girls and a boy. The legend goes that my parents agreed my father would name the girls and my mother would name the boys. At the time Kelly was quite common as a boys name. My other two sisters also have names that could be considered boys names. Thankfully, the names were also trending for girls so we weren’t stuck with names we hate. I love my name and I think my sisters love their’s as well. My brother was named after my father who had a very strong gender appropriate name.
Rachel says
FABRIC ME! My name was just my parents’ favorite fit for me when they first saw me. I think that’s cool.
Oskar says
FABRIC ME!
My father picked it an having some German heritage it’s spelt unconventionally with a K. Oskar!!! It has more character and I would never change it for anything else.
Kristen says
Fabric ME!!
I don’t have a special story behind my first name, but my middle name is from my mom’s side of the family!
Emily says
FABRIC ME!
My First, Emily, name is after my great grandmother Emmy. And my middle name, Helen, is the same as my Grandma’s…but then when I got married I changed my middle name to my maiden name. :) She didn’t seem to mind LOL
Stacy says
FABRIC ME!
My name has no special meaning – just a name my parents liked!
