After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

FABRIC ME!
my mom was going to name me carla, but my new england grandmother couldn’t pronounce it correctly.
Heather J. says
FABRIC ME!
What a wonderfully random question! No special meaning, my folks just liked it (and so did everyone else in 1983).
Although, apparently, my mom first noticed the name because there was an instrumental piece entitled “Heather” on the B-side of a Carpenters’ album from the 70’s. I’ve since learned that the song was originally composed as background music for a Geritol commercial. Ha!
Jenny says
Fabric me!
I was named after my paternal grandmother who was also just a Jenny, not Jennifer. I love it that way.
Meagan says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Meagan – pronounced like “Reagan” – which is fun because my husband’s middle name is Reagan – after the president.
Amanda says
FABRIC ME!
My name was my dad’s grandma’s name. My mom was visiting a cemetary with his mom leaving flowers for memorial day,and saw her tombstone and picked it.
SarahO says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name was named after a little girl my mom used to babysit!
Oskar says
FABRIC ME!
My father picked it an having some German heritage it’s spelt unconventionally with a K. Oskar!!! It has more character and I would never change it for anything else.
Silvia says
FABRIC ME!
my name means “woman from the woods / forest” or “wooden fairy”. but i don’t know of any story why my parents picked my name….
Maria says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after my grandmother. She was a strong woman with a big heart, so I am proud to be named after her.
Jennifer T. says
FABRIC ME!!
My name is really common, but that’s okay. My parents weren’t the most creative, but now that I’m pregnant I am realizing how hard it is to pick a name out for your little one!
Christine says
FABRIC ME!
I’m named after my great-great-great grandfather who was named Christian.
Lacey says
FABRIC ME!
My mom always said I was “pretty like lace”, but you know, I’m sure she wasn’t going to name me “dish towel” if I had been an ugly child. I actually really like my name. It’s not terribly common and it is easy to pronounce.
Charlotte Elisabeth Langley says
FABRIC ME!
Well basically my two aunts are called Charlotte & the other Elisabeth. But everyone calls me Beth because in Wales (UK) your called by your 2nd name. And I’m called by the 2nd half of my 2nd name to avoid family confusion between me and Elisabeth. x
Charlotte Elisabeth Langley says
P.S I got my own email address wrong in the last comment…..I’m a .com not a .co.uk! x
Maggie says
FABRIC ME! Margaret Lee…after my Maternal grandmother (Lee) and Paternal grandmother (Margaret). My Mom’s middle name is also Lee, so I’m looking forward to continuing that tradition (as long as I get a girl!)…
Amanda says
Fabric Me!!
I always knew that my parents picked my name from a baby book right there in the hospital. It wasn’t until recently that one of my sisters told me that all of my siblings and parents decided on my name when they all saw me in the hospital. I love that way better than the baby book story ;)
Massiel says
FABRIC ME! Name’s got no special meaning but it definitely stands out! (And often, I am mistaken for a boy… no, it’s not French!!)
Nicole says
FABRIC ME! My parents could only agree on one boy name (Michael Alan) and one girl name (Amy Nicole). Thankfully, when my older sister was born they changed the middle name to keep Nicole for a possible younger sister. Otherwise, I think I would have been named Michael. A nice name, but Nicole fits me a bit better ;)
Tiffany says
FABRIC ME!
My dad apparently chose my name, but I’ve never liked it. TV and book characters named Tiffany are usually not very smart!
SheLikesToTravel says
Fabric Me!
My name has no significance, but I would have preferred my parents second choice… Julie.
Kim says
FABRIC ME!
My Middle name, Anne is my great-grandmother’s name.
Nikki_W says
FABRIC ME! Nicole was option #2 for my parents; they wanted to name me Sophia but grandma gave that name to her dog while I was in utero :-/
Jodie says
FABRIC ME
My mum found out she was having twins when she was over 7 months pregnant, so having already picked out one name for my sister – the nurse named me!
Kelly says
FABRIC ME! My Mom loved the original Charlie’s Angels series, especially the character Kelly. So, thats how I got my name. If I win, I will use the gift certificate to buy fabric for my baby’s nursery – she is due in April!
Stephanie says
Fabric ME!!
My dad picke dmy first name and girls in my moms family have middle names that start with “m” so mine is Marie. Both of my daughters are named after grandparents from both sides.
Marianne Kasch says
Fabric me.
My grandmothers’ names were Marian and Marion. I was named Marianne in honor of both of them.
Hill says
FABRIC ME!!
My name was supposed to be Courtney or Hillary for no other reason than they liked the sound.
I grew up during the Clinton years and was always called Hillary Clinton–which I HATED! When I married I became Hillary Banks–character on the fresh prince…not a really likeable character.
So cheers to everyone else who is getting made fun of for their parents’ name choice!!!!
Anne with an e says
Fabric me! I’m named after my great grandmother, and it’s extra special to me because in my family we’re quite matriarchal and pass down names to girls rather than boys with sr., jr., etc. – my great grandma was Angeline, my grandma is Evangeline, my mom is Angelea, and I’m Angeline…
Laura R. says
Fabric me!!
My name means “crown of laurel leaves” – which, in the Greco-Roman era was used as a symbol of victory, honor or fame.
Karli says
FABRIC ME!!!
I’m named after my great-grandma who was full Norwegian. So, of course my parents gave me the Norwegian spelling of my name, which every. single. person butchered while growing up. Didn’t get a nickname until later in high school. I appreciate the name now, but definitely not growing up!
Karen says
Fabric me!
I don’t think I’m named after anyone, but my name starts with a “K” just like other sisters.
Nicole says
FABRIC ME! My mom just liked my first name. My middle name is the same as my mom’s middle name, her grandma’s middle name, and so on. It will probably be my daughter’s middle name if I have one.
Rhonda says
FABRIC ME!
No special meaning to my name. I think it just happened to be popular in the 80’s. haha
Beth says
Fabric Me! Both my first name and my middle name are a carried on tradition within my family and one I hope to pass on to any potential children my husband and I have as well.
Cara says
FABRIC ME! My family nickname comes from my (older) sister being unable to say my name when we were babies :) — it was the closest she could come, and it stuck :) My parents also tried to nickname me “Bubbles,” but apparently I asked them to stop calling me that when I was 4 — (a) the name came from my bubbly personality and (b) whyever did I ask for them to stop? Baby genius me.
Kandice says
Fabric Me!! No special meaning behind my name. It was my dad’s favorite name growing up. When naming my children, my husband and I have been trying to be creative and fun, without being overly creative and fun….
Brooke says
Fabric me!
No meaning behind my name. My parents just liked it!
Erin C. says
FABRIC ME! My name isn’t anything spectacular. I am Erin and would have been Aaron if I had been a boy. So creative, Mom and Dad!
Megan says
Fabric me! Megan means little pearl in Welsh and I think is some form of Margaret. I’m not sure why my parents chose it, but pearls are my favorite gem so I’ve come to appreciate my name. My engagement ring was even a pearl and I doubt my now husband knew that my name was related to that.
I’m more attached to my middle name, Marie, which is always given to the first daughter in our family. Not sure why that is, but it is nice that my mom and grandmother have the same middle tying us together since none of our last names are the same anymore.
Joelle says
FABRIC ME! I’m named after my dad :-)
Raeann says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after a character in a paperback novel my mom read as a young girl…she has no idea what the book was called, and the character apparently was a minor one, so I’ve never been able to track it down. Fans of YHL – feel free to let me know if you ever read a book with a character named Raeann!
Wendi says
FABRIC ME! My parents liked the name because it was unique in the early ’70s — Wendi Adele. When I was younger I wished they had spelled Wendi with a ‘y’ as in ‘Wendy’ because I got tired of correcting teachers, etc. who spelled it with a ‘y’
Laci says
FABRIC ME!!
Laci means cheerful/happy, and I started smiling a lot right after I was born while the doctors/nurses were cleaaning me up. I didn’t cry…just smiled (or so the story goes). My middle name means ‘Desired.’ After my older brother was born, my mom was told she couldn’t have anymore kids (really funny now because she went on to have 3 more). My dad really wanted a little girl; so he chose my middle name to symbolize that desire. :-) I secretly hated it as a kid until my dad told me that story.
Kristin says
Fabric Me!
My name was chosen very last minute. They thought I was going to be a boy, so when it turned out the other way, they had to quickly choose a name. My mom had received a lot of maternity clothes throughout her pregnancy as gifts, which unfortunately she wouldn’t be able to use much longer, but she did receive one shirt that wasn’t maternity, and the brand was Kristin Nicole, which is how I got my name.
Laura says
Fabric me!!! And Laura from little house on the prarie…my parents couldn’t agree and this was what was on the tv at the hospital….yes, I am that old,…
Kate says
FABRIC ME!
My parents both liked the name Katherine, so that is my full name. When I was younger I went by Katie and now I go by Kate!
Molly says
FABRIC ME!!!
My daddy picked my name but they ALMOST named me Madeline. So glad its not that now. If I was going to be a boy, I would have been Zach. Saved by the Bell anyone?
Amanda says
FABRIC ME! No special meaning really. My mom picked it because she thought it was a name that I could grow with. Meaning it worked for a little girl as well as an adult.
ryan says
FABRIC ME!
My mom was obsessed with the actor Ryan O’Neal back in the day. She and my dad knew that they wanted to use my dad’s middle name (O’Shea) for a boy’s middle name and Ryan sounded nice as a first name. Well, surprise! She got a girl instead and named me Ryan Barbara (middle name after my aunt and grandmother). My younger brother got the O’Shea 4 years later (he’s Cameron O’Shea).
