After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

No special story, just my parents liked it.

My name is Anne and my father’s mother’s name was also Anne but my mother (who had a somewhat complicated relationship with her mother-in-law) swears that I am not named after my grandmother. I’m glad I am, though, because she was awesome.
Janelle says

Marlena says
Fabric me!!
My mom was going to name me Christina or Marlena (my dad suggested this name from a former girlfriend. No. really.). They settled on Marlena, but then my mom changed her mind. Since my dad had already told everyone, she decided to keep it instead. I get my indecisiveness from her. :)
Kate Sochacki says
Fabric Me!
I’m named after my grandmother and Aunt. I also have a problem with fabric stores and buying fabric. I’ve been known to pick up a piece because I can’t resist it and then months later pick a project for it!
amy b says
FABRIC ME! I was named after “Amy” from “Little Women” ;).
Alissa G says
FABRIC ME!
I was born when Alyssa Milano was just starting to become popular. My parents heard the name and liked it, but spelled it with an i instead of y. Aside from the fact that my teachers always pronounced my name wrong on the first day of classes, I love my name. It is not a common one. My middle name, Lynn, is my mom’s first name.
Jen says
FABRIC ME! My Aunt named me because she loved the name Jennifer…along with 50% of other parents of that time.
Courtney M says
FABRIC ME!
My parents named me after Natalie Wood’s daughter’s name because they loved it. At the time, there weren’t many Courtneys.
Mandy says
FABRIC ME!!!
I was named after the Barry Manilow song. I read somewhere that he wrote that song for his dog. So, I have been named after Barry Manilow’s dog Lol.
Rebecca @This Nest is Best says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after Daniel Boone’s wife, Rebecca. There are no words!
Kara says
Fabric Me!
I really have no idea what my name means. I just know as a kid I wanted a name that was more common, one I could find on key chains and things.
Heather says
FABRIC ME!!!
I heart your blog!! Your book was awesome too.
My name is Heather and I was born in the 70’s so I think they just wanted the most popular name then :)
Megan Geneva says
Fabric me! I was named after my Great Aunt Geneva.
Lauren K. says
FABRIC ME!
My name means “queen of laurel leaves” but there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to my parents choosing it other than they thought it was nice. I love my name, I think it’s beautiful!
Sarah D says
Fabric me! My middle name is passed down to the first born daughter in the family. I’m the 4th or 5th generation.
Ashley says
Fabric me!
Oh, I need this so bad. I have 12 ft ceilings I have to make curtains for (since you can’t find ones to buy ANYWHERE!)
LaTonya says
FABRIC ME! My name didn’t have a significant meaning for my parents. They just picked a name they liked! Although a variation, Tonya, means Praiseworthy which I think is cool. Thanks for the great giveaway.

Nikki says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Nicole, which means Victory of the people. I wasn’t named after anybody, my parents just really liked the name and the meaning.
Susie says
FABRIC ME!
My name (Susan) means lily, but I think my parents chose it just because my mom liked it. I’ve never loved it, but I do like the nickname Susie.
Lynzee S. says
FABRIC ME!
Nicole says
FABRIC ME!
I might need to have a chat with my parents, I don’t know why I have my name :) I think it was just a popular 80’s name.
Aitziber says
FABRIC ME!
Jillian says
Fabric Me!
My parents were certain I was a boy, so they hadn’t discussed a girls name. During labor, my mom was watching a soap opera with a lawyer named Jillian, and they decided if it happened to be a girl, that would be her name – surprise surprise, it’s a girl! – and that’s how I got my name!
Jana says
FABRIC ME! No big story here. My mom worked with a lady named Jana and liked her name. I like it though. :)
Rachael says
FABRIC ME!
My parents had an agreement that if I had dark hair, I would be Rachel but if I had light or no hair, I would be Crystal, and their next girl would be the other. The joke was on them when my dark hair fell out and turned very blonde for a few years, and my younger sister had even darker hair (and kept it). Plus, my mom spelled my name wrong on the birth certificate (second a), but decided to keep it.
Alexandra F says
Fabric Me!
My mom chose my name because it was the name of her favorite character in a book. The character was based on Alexandra Romanov the last zarina of Russia. Nothing like being named for a woman that gets executed right? I don’t have anything against the name, but Im not a huge fan. People generally think I’m a guy if I just list Alex or they call me Alexander. For that reason I gave my daughter a very feminine name!
Rachel says
FABRIC ME!
My first name was after my great aunt Rachel. My middle name (Vaughn) is my great great grandmothers maiden. The first female of every generation is given her maiden name as their middle name.
Erica says
Fabric Me!
Kerri says
FABRIC ME!
My first & middle names are my granny’s middle names – and they originally are the last names of my granny’s parent’s best friends. So yeah, I have a last name for my first, middle & last name. :)
Ashley says
FABRIC ME!!
My mom was very original and took my first and middle name from the soap opera- The Young and the Restless. I know entirely too many Ashley Nicole’s and I’d love to have a more original name!
Cyan B says
FABRIC ME!
My name, Cyan, is a color. My father is a printer, and it is a color of ink he uses. Also, my mother went to school with a girl named Cyan, and loved the name.
Jessica says
FABRIC ME!
There is no special meaning behind my name (that I know of). Although my parents tried to pick unique names for myself and my siblings. We like to laugh that they did a real good job on picking a unique name for me. Yeah, Jessica, not so unique. :)
Kelsey says
FABRIC ME!
My mom heard my name on a McDonalds commercial while pregnant, and it stuck.
Lacey M says
FABRIC ME! My parents were spitballing names for me when my mom was pregnant, and my dad told my mom he’d like to name me Chuck if I were a boy. She immediately nixed it, saying “Chuck” was an awful sounding name. He came back to her saying that he still liked the name, but also wanted to name me after his grandfathers Gordon and Herbert. I guess I should be thankful I turned out to be a girl, because otherwise I would be known as “Gordoherberchuck” according to my dad.
Laurie says
Fabric Me!!
I don’t think there is any meaning behind my name! Although my last name is still less then a year old to me, so I’m especially liking that part of my name :)
Stephanie says
FABRIC ME! I was named after my great aunt Stephie!
Molly says
Fabric Me!
My name fit a few important criteria: easy to spell (my last name is tricky), limited nickname options, Irish, and works with my last name. Molly fit the bill and still does.
Valerie says
Fabric Me!
Finally got my mom to admit she was secretly thinking of Valerie Bertinelli when she named me.
Teresa says
Fabric me!
I have never loved my name. But eh as shakespeare would say “what’s in a name?”
