After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Katy says
FABRIC ME!
Brenda Kliethermes says
FABRIC ME!
No special meaning other than that my parents liked it.
Joanna says
FABRIC ME!
My name, Joanna, means God is gracious.
I’m named after two great grandmas… one had Johanna has a middle name and the other her first. And the one with the same first name, I was born on her birthday, and everyone says I look just like her. She was a sweet woman who I’m honored to take after.
Courtney Alisa says
FABRIC ME!!!!
My name has a funny story. My mom and her childhood best friend promised to name their first daughter after each other. My mom lived up to her side of the promise, but Alisa only had boys. hahahahah!
Chelsey says
FABRIC ME!
My name comes from my neighbor, my mom liked it… so she went with it! No special story, but I make the name special ;)
Susie says
FABRIC ME! I am named after both of my beautiful grandmothers, Susan and Grace :)
Brooke says
Fabric me! My parents loved the name Brooke Alison and it coincidentally both of my aunts’ middle names, so it’s a faux family name:)
Caitlynne says
FABRIC ME!
My mom named me after a nurse on her favorite show, All My Children. She had it picked out before I was even conceived.
Amy D says
FABRIC ME!!
My name is Amy Suzanne. My parents originally told me that I was named after Amy in Little Women, but I think that’s a lie because she was kind of bratty. Then I found out later (like 5 years ago) that my mom’s friend was pregnant about a year before I was born… she was going to name her kid Amy Suzanne, but their last name started with an S so that wouldn’t have been appropriate initial-wise. So they ditched that name and my mom snatched it up for me. :)
kristi benningfield says
fabric me!! my parents just liked the sound of it, i guess. glad they at least spelled it a bit differently than most since it is SUCH a common name :)
morgan smith says
FABRIC ME! My name (Morgan) means by the sea, but it was actually the (last) name of the doctor that delivered me! How’s that for not planning ahead!
Matt says
Fabric me!! no clue!
Martha says
FABRIC ME!
My father simply liked the name. My older sister and three younger brothers all were named after someone, so as a child I was sure that I wasn’t really part of the family.
I love the fabric and I have a whole house that needs curtains or fabric shades.
JennyA says
Fabric Me! I’m named after my great-great-grandmother, whose name was Jenny (it was really Jane), BUT my mother wanted me to have a name that Jenny is “short for” (because her name is Bonnie and people always asked her when she was a kid what it was a nickname for and she was just, like… “Nothing, it’s my name.”) and so they named me Jennifer. But I go by Jenny!
Devynn says
FABRIC ME!
My mother named me for… drumroll please… the Devon Horse Show in Devon, PA. The current spelling is more practical than the original (Devinne) which everyone in the hospital on the day of my birth mispronounced as ‘divine.’ Thanks, mom!
Melissa says
FABRIC ME!
You’ll love this…my name is Greek for honeybee!
Holly Faske says
FABRIC ME!
My name is the name of my mom’s cousin :-)
Melissa says
FABRIC ME!
My name literally means “honey bee” but my parents got it from Little House on the Prairie (Melissa Gilbert & Melissa Sue Anderson). :) 80s baby!
Hannah R says
Fabric Me! My name means Full of Grace. I really like my name, and my nickname, Hannah Banana, and the song my mom used to sing to me…Hannah Banana with meatball eyes, stick her in the oven and got french fries. Or this one: Hannah Banana plays the pianah’, all she can play is the star spangled bannah’
Katie says
FABRIC MEEEEEE
My full name is Katherine which is a family name which my dad loves (its like everywhere you turn there is a Kathryn, Kate, Kathy etc) but my mum doesn’t like it so she only agreed to call me Katherine if I would be known as Katie. It works since I am definitely more of a Katie than Katherine.
Jessica K. says
FABRIC ME!!
My first name was the most common girl name in 1987, which I wonder all the time what my parents were thinking because my maiden name is Johnson! So original, I know!
Petra says
FABRIC ME!
I love sowing…
Concerning my name: my Dad picked my middle name after the main character of a ply he was rehersing when I was born. The funny thing though is that he did not tell my mom that he was going to put a second name on the birth certificate. You can tell that she got angry once she’d figured that out
Stephanie says
Fabric me! Oooh I want to make some new pillows. My name… no idea why it was picked.
Jenny Maesas says
Fabric Me!!
Wendy says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Wendy and it didn’t become popular until Peter Pan. A little girl who adored JM Barrie couldn’t pronounce her r’s so friendy became fwendy as she referred to Barrie as “my fwendy.” This is how Barrie name Wendy Darling in Peter Pan.
Sarah says
FABRIC ME!
Technically my name means princess. I think the inspiration behind it was the Hall and Oats song, “Sarah Smile.”
Angela B says
FABRIC ME! My Mom picked out my name when she was 11 years old. She refused to think that she would have anything other than a girl so it was only in the car on the way to the hospital that my Dad finally got her to agree to a possible boy name.
Miranda says
FABRIC ME! There isn’t a particularly interesting story behind my name–my mom just likes to read. It comes from Shakespeare’s The Tempest. As far as I know, he’s the one who coined the name Miranda.
Ashley says
FABRIC ME!!
I was to be Lauren until my mother met an elderly woman she volunteered to take meals to. The woman was near the end of her days, and the last time my mom saw her she said “you’re going to have a girl, and you should name her Ashley”. Since this was before you could find out the baby’s sex pre-birthday, my mom felt it was only right when, low and behold, she had a girl… and named me Ashley.
Now PLEASE, some fabric for the window seat cushions I’m on the hook to make!! :D
Shawna arsenault says
Fabric me!
Angela says
Fabric me, please!
My name means “messenger from the sea of bitterness” and, as one can imagine, I dislike it immensely. Apparently, I had a huge circular bruise on my head and my father thought I looked like an angel with a halo. It’s a sweet story, but not a cool name. :)
Alisha says
FABRIC ME!
I always wished there was a better meaning behind my name but the truth is, I was supposed to be a boy named Samuel, and when I caught everyone off guard.. they had to come up with something:)
Sara says
FABRIC ME!!! So, no news about my own name–I know it means princess, but no cool story. My husband and I decided to name our daughter Lucy, which means “light”. We had a devastating pregnancy loss prior to her, and she really was the ‘light’ at the end of a very dark tunnel for us.
Martina says
Fabric me!
My name means “warlike” and was chosen because it’s my great-great-aunt’s name.
Whitney says
FABRIC ME! My parents just heard my name and liked it.
Nichole says
FABRIC ME!
Nichole means victory…but I think my parents just picked it because they liked it…and they wanted me to have to deal with people spelling it wrong all the time to build my character. :-)
Sara says
Fabric me!
I’ve never really liked my name, but my grandmother suggested it. Picking a name has proved to be the most challenging part of my pregnancy, though, because DH and I like different things!
Kristin L. says
“FABRIC ME!”. My first name was picked just because my parents liked it. But they didn’t really have a middle name picked out when I arrived. So at the hospital they decided on ‘Jane’ who was my grandfather’s sister’s name who passed away when they were kids. My grandfather was so touched that he went right into the hospital nursery and wrote it on my name tag.
Lori says
Fabric Me!
I’m ok with my nickname, which the whole world uses. My full name is Loretta, Hate it. But my sister was Mildred…so I get the better name of the two of us.
Amber N. says
FABRIC ME!
My parents were going to name me Samantha, but they didn’t want me to think they wanted a boy instead because the name often gets shortened to Sam. I was the third girl in our family…
Justine says
FABRIC ME!
My first name means “justice”…but my mom just picked it out a name book out of desperation when my dad said he wanted to name me Ariel. (no offense all ya’ll Ariels out there!)
My middle names are Arcadia and Mari though. My dad picked those; Arcadia is the name of a planet from his favorite series of Sci-Fi books, and Mari is the name of his least favorite aunt. (he said he wanted to learn to associate it with someone better. hah!)
Aimee says
Fabric me! And my name is Aimee… More interesting than Amy perhaps?! #rebelparents
Ashley says
Fabric Me!
No special meaning that I know of! My last name is also a common female name, so my parents used to joke around that they considered making that my first name as well! Yikes. Whenever I want to complain about how common my name is, I just think about what it would be like to have a double name!
Caitlin Wallace says
FABRIC ME! My freshman year of high school I had to write a paper about how I got my name. It basically boiled down to the fact that somewhere way down the line my family was part Irish, so my dad wanted an Irish name. They couldn’t decide on anything until they finally found, Caitlin. My little sister has a way cooler story though, her name is Kelsey Valentine. My great grandpa was born on Valentines Day and was then given the name Paul Valentine. Since Kelsey was also born in February, she got the middle name Valentine after him. It fits her so well! :)
Tina says
Fabric me!
The whole family picked my name before I was born.
Hannah says
Fabric me! My mother chose the name of her first daughter (me, Hannah) when she was still in elementary school: she just loved it. At that time and through growing up, the name wasn’t very common, which was nice :)
Jacquesline says
FABRIC ME!
SO my name…. I get phonetic variations of my name all the time but it’s pronounced in French (think Devil Wears Prada Meryl Streep’s European magazine counterpart) with a rolling French “J” (like je m’appelle), last syllable “leen.” Imagine being a small child, and not only having to say this to people, but spell it!
PHEW… the struggle! I was named after my aunt Jackie because she helped my mother so much throughout her pregnancy, but my mother, who had done some tv production things in Europe, loved the French language. Hence, I honor my Aunt Jackie with a twist. (I don’t like being called Jackie by the way… weird, I know).
My middle names, Christine Antoinette, are the feminine counterpart to my dad’s middle names: Christopher Anthony. My paternal grandmother is very religious and a Christian and wanted “Christ” in me and my sister’s middle names (I am Christine, she is Christina). So I have this very long French name… but my last name is very English. It’s Walker. Just Walker. It’s actually pretty common in my family’s country… which is Jamaica. Hilarious I know – very long name story, very French, all Jamaican heritage.
*shrugs* BTW – I adore this blog. I’ve been slowly embracing my love for DIY and have been contemplating the task of upholstery for the past three weeks (only because I’ve run out of things in my apartment to paint)! You guys rock!
