After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. FABRIC ME!
I’m named after my grandfather. Kind of in reverse and with the feminine versions.
Amy M. says
FABRIC ME!
No fun family story behind my name, but as a child I thought it was a very boring name. In 2nd grade I told my teachers my name was really Amanda. That only went on for a few months as I recall. I’m quite happy with my real name now, though. :)
Jacie says
FABRIC ME!!
My name was supposed to be Sarah. When I was born, my parents lived in a small town and my mom has a very common first and last name. There happened to be another person in her town with the same name who was arrested for massive check fraud and there was a front page article about it in the paper. For awhile after that, every time my mom tried to write a check she got a hard time and many people thought it was her who committed check fraud!! After that, they decided that their children would have very unique names!
Carley says
Fabric me! I have a twin brother and our names both begin with C and just go together well!
Julianne says
Fabric me!
My mom named me after one of the babies she delivered
Laura James says
FABRIC ME!! (Pretty please)
My parents heard my name whilst in the middle of the Simpson Dessert here in Australia – they had met a couple who had a little girl with my first and middle name. I think they just liked it! If I had have been a boy I would have been “William”, which coincidentally I would love for a future son of mine!
Ashley S. says
Fabric me! Love this weeks bonus question (:
My name was actually supposed to be Jennifer Lynn right up until I was born, then my mom decided on Ashley Renee instead. She picked it because Ashley was the most popular girls name that year, talk about doing the opposite.
Deena Hopkins says
FABRIC ME!!
My parents both have names that start with D. They named my sister after my mom’s grandfather, whose names also started with a D. So when I came, they had to find another D name. They liked Deena and hated Dina. I like having a slightly unusual name, I rarely meet another Deena. But it was frustrating when I could never find pencils or a license plate for my bike. :(
Sarah S says
FABRIC ME! My parents named me after a song my mom liked. Although I was pretty excited when I was told that Sarah meant princess, growing up I always wanted a name that had a nickname with it. Now that I see how annoying that can be (like, ” will I be listed under Bill or William” or something like that…), I’m good!
Renee VanReed says
FABRIC ME! No significance behind being named Renee – my mom just liked it – but I LOVE it. I would never change my name!
Jennifer M says
FABRIC ME!!
My name was just one that my mom always liked. She had a friend with a sister named Jennifer, and they called her Jenner, so that was always my nickname growing up. My middle name is after my great grandmother though. :)
Kelly says
FABRIC ME! Although they try to deny it, my parents named me after a bar. Super classy.
Lauren says
FABRIC ME!!!!!
My parents just liked my name although my dad’s favorite is my first name and my mom’s my middle.
Avis Wampler says
FABRIC ME!
I am apparently named after a girl my dad knew in high school. Weird right? It wasn’t an ex-girlfriend or anything, just a name he liked. It means bird in latin and warning in french (have you ever seen AVISO on a plastic bag?).
It’s strange and I have only run into 2 other Avises in my life. I get lots of compliments on it but many people introduce themselves as Hertz. I also used to say that my dad owns Avis car rental but that’s not even close to being true.
I absolutely LOVE my name and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. My family called me Avie growing up and now that is my company name.
Anna K says
Fabric me! My name isn’t a family name, just one both my parents liked.
A. Hansen says
FABRIC ME!
I love my name, though my middle name took some getting used to. I’m named after my dad (and grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather) even though I didn’t turn out to be a boy (my parents ended up with 3 daughters and I was their last-ditch effort). I love the history and sentiment behind the name and we carried on part of the tradition with my son.
Kelly says
FABRIC ME! At first, my Mother wanted to name me Victoria, but settled on Kelly after a woman on a daytime soap:)
Sara says
Fabric me!!
I was named after my aunt and my twin after my mother.
Meg says
Fabric me! My name means rain and I wasn’t born on a rainy day, but I love rain.
Amanda w says
FABRIC ME!
My name means “worthy of love.” But no special family significance. I do like it though.
Christina says
FABRIC ME! I think my name means of Christ or something similar to that, which I love because I am a Christian. I’m not sure why my parents chose it, but when I was a kid I had a major meltdown because my parents didn’t name me Marcia. Yeah, I was watching a ton of the Brady Bunch at that time. Haha! My Mom still picks on me about it!
Liz says
FABRIC ME!
I don’t think I’m named after anyone…although my dad did want to name me Geneva instead. I’m happy with my mom’s pick, though!
Kristin says
FABRIC ME!
My parents picked my name because it means “follower of Christ”, not realizing that I’d grow up with at least 3 other Kristen/Kristins in my class at all times :) Also, they didn’t know this either, but it’s a Scandinavian name that goes very well with my Norwegian maiden name.
Lindsay says
Fabric me!
And no exciting meaning behind my name. I’ve always liked it though, even after a certain Lohan came into the picture (I had it first! – hehe). sigh.
Aurelie says
fabric me!
my name is french. my parents met in france when my mom was an exchange student (it’s a great, movie-worthy story). it was rough as a kid and i even tried being called by my middle name (rachel) for a brief time in 2nd grade (epic fail when the other rachel in the class put up a big stink to the teacher). but now i love its uniqueness, and think it was very character building. i can’t imaging having a common name! but i still do cringe a little when i say my full name on the phone and get ” what??” as a reply.

FABRIC ME!
My name is Christina and my paternal grandmother was going to name my father Christina because it was the 50s and the best guess at gender for a fetus was based on nonsense like how she was carrying the baby. But, as you may have guessed he came out and seeing as how he was a boy they were forced to pick a different name. Then when he had his own baby on the way (c’est moi), my grandmother practically insisted on my name being Christina, as though it would go to waste if it wasn’t used.
hillarybug says
FABRIC ME! My parents chose my name because they liked the meaning (“cheerful”), and because they thought it sounded good with our last name. They like the alliteration. When I was a kid, I hated my name because it was fairly unusual, but now I like it. It’s nice not to share a name with a bunch of other people.
Diane Montgomery says
Fabric Me! My name doesn’t have any meaning or family significance, but that my Dad always loved the name so he named me it.
Katie Richards says
Fabric me!
My name is really Katherine Joy. My mom wanted to stick with plain Katie but my dad insisted I have a formal name in case I want to be a doctor or lawyer (I’m a stay at home mom!). The “Joy” is because after already having a boy, they were very joyful to have a daughter!
Natalie says
No story behind my name but I could sure find a use for that fabric!
Amy says
FABRIC ME! Originally my name was going to be Kirsten Elise. Would have been more in sound keeping with my siblings…Corey, Kira and Kayla. But when I was born my dad said I was Amy, which means beloved. Kirsten got bumped to middle name and Elise went to Kira!
Julia says
FABRIC ME!
My name is my great grandmother’s, so nothing revolutionary there. The better story is my middle name. My dad and sister wanted one name, my mom wanted another, and so somehow my mom snuck her choice onto my birth certificate without my dad knowing (she feels super guilty about it now, but I find it pretty funny, as does my dad). The funniest part is that until about the age of 6, I thought that my middle name was the one my dad had chosen. Don’t know how that slipped through the cracks, but if you go back to things I wrote in kindergarten and first grade, they are signed Julia Beth (my dad’s choice) instead of Julia Kathleen (my real name).
My parents tell me I was inconsolable when I first found out, but now I love my real name.
Melissa says
FABRIC ME! (It’ll decorate my house when I move to my new job post-PhD!) My parents named me Melissa Ann. Melissa after my dad’s twin sister (before my parents had any kids, my dad told my mom that if they ever had a daughter, he wanted to name her after his twin) and Ann is my mom’s middle name and was my Grandma’s middle name sort of (it was Annabelle; everyone called her Ann).
Melissa means honeybee in Greek, so I have 2 honeybee tattoos :)
Ellen says
FABRIC ME!
my name means “light” and I think it was just my parents’ favorite. It was Ellen or Ariel, which is pretty, but I’ve always been glad they chose Ellen.
Nichole says
Fabric me! My first name, Leslie, came from my great, great grandfather. My middle name, Nichole, came from a soap opera. : / I do like that it has an unique spelling, though.
Kristen says
FABRIC ME!
My grandpa decided on Kristen over Michaela, which is good because my best friend’s name is Michaela.
xoxo
Leah says
Fabric Me! My parents were inspired by Star Wars, which led them to the more classic, Biblical name.
Liz says
FABRIC ME!
My full name is Elizabeth Jane. My parents chose my name (and my sister’s names) because they love classic, old fashioned names. But I also found it too long and formal for my personality so I go by Liz.
Abbie says
Abbie (technically Abigail which means source joy) :)
alexis says
FABRIC ME!
Mary K says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after my 2 grandmothers, mary and Catherine. Actually, my name was supposed to be Faith, but after 5 boys both of my parents forgot (I can’t imagine why?!) all about that and named me Mary K. It turned out that Faith was the perfect name for my challenged younger sister.
Meagan says
Fabric Me! My middle name Sue is passed down 4 generations!
Carrie says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after a great aunt. I love my name and that it is spelled “the right way” or the old fashioned way as my elders put it.
Rebecca says
Fabric ME!!!!!
Laura says
Fabric Me! I don’t think my name had a special meaning, but my father liked it, so he got to pick, I guess.
Kristen Paulson says
FABRIC ME!
My name has a boring meaning (of Christian origin), and there is no exciting story behind why it was chosen. It was copied from a family friend’s name just because my parents liked it. The only difference is mine is spelled the cool way – I’m a ‘ten’ not a ‘tin’ ;)
(Just kidding!!! I’m not that self absorbed, I promise!)
Robyn says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after the lead female character in ‘A Falcon Flies’ by Wilbur Smith. Up to that point I think it was the only book that BOTH of my parents had read – they have very different tastes in books.
Cherie says
FABRIC ME! My first initial is for a great aunt Clara- hence the unusual spelling of Cherie!
Nickie says
FABRIC ME! I was supposed to be named Jackie, but when I arriving into the world, my folks said I just didn’t look like a “Jackie.” So they named me Nickie instead. Not Nicole, just Nickie. I love the name and feel that it fits me a lot better than Jackie!
Stacey Evans says
FABRIC ME!
My dad wanted to name me Anastasia and my mom thought it was too long. Stacey was a nickname listed under Anastasia so they went with it!
