After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Charity M. says
FABRIC ME!
My first name, Charity, means love. My mother picked it out because when she was little, she slept in a bed built by her great-great grandfather for his second wife, Charity. The storey goes that his first marriage was arranged and short (she died 5 years into it after her third child was born) and their childeren are my mother’s ansestors, but he loved his second wife and that she loved his children as if they were her very own. He carved her name into the headboard of thier bed after she died as a way to feel closer to her. My mom loved the story and after her fiance died before they could marry, she decided that if she ever had a second chance at love, she would name her daughter after her great-great grandfather’s second wife.
Drew says
FABRIC ME!!! I’m not sure exactly how I got my name. I was originally Andrew but my parents didn’t want anyone calling me Andy so they started calling me Drew at an early age. I love your website! I need to win this so that I can make new curtains to replace the DYI ones I dyed and ruined when I tried to wash them!
Lisa G. says
Fabric Me! There isn’t anything special about my name but I do share my initials with my younger sister.
Ashley House says
FABRIC ME! I have one of the most popular names from the 80s-90s. In fact, I don’t think I was ever the only Ashley in any class I was in kindergarten through senior year. I even shared a middle name with several girls I graduated with and one of them had the same birthday too!
Holly says
FABRIC ME!
The meaning of my name should also be kinda self explanatory … :)
Maggie says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my grandmother and step-grandmother on my Mom’s side!
Kathy says
FABRIC ME!
My full name is Katherine (which is a family name) but my parents debated between nicknaming me Kathy or Katie. In the end, a close friend of my dad told him he’d never met a Kathy he didn’t like. So they took his advice. :)
jenn says
FABRIC ME! My first name is Jennifer, which, in 1979 was the most popular girl’s name. My mom insists that I wasn’t named after the movie Love Story, that she just liked it. She also had no idea how popular it was since I was the first baby born in her group of friends/siblings/cousins. I often did wish it was different growing up, being one of a million Jenn, Jen, Jennifer, Jenny, Jennie. But now I’m just used to it. :)
Amber says
FABRIC ME!
My name was going to be Brandy Eve, and it was on some paperwork at some point in time. One of my Dad’s friends visited the hospital and mentioned that my Dad dated a girl name Brandy for a while. My name was changed to Amber within the hour. My middle name is Eve after my grandmother and I was born on New Year’s Eve.
Kitty says
Fabric Me!
My mother claims that I’m named after one of my dad’s old girlfriends in Germany. He never denied it.
Elyse Danielle says
FABRIC ME! My name is Elyse…and although I like that it is unique, people are always butchering it. AND…when I meet someone new, they can never seem to remember it!
Sue Ryan says
Fabric me! My name means “full of grace”. Some say I live up to it, but it is hard to see knowing myself as I do.

My Mom named me after Wendy Darling from Peter Pan, her favourite children’s book.

Zara says
FABRIC ME!
My mom fell in love with my name when a little girl and her brother came into the store she was working in when she was younger. Years later when my parents had a daughter, they named me Zara.
Narelle says
Fabric me!
My name is Australian and had only been around since the 1950’s – it’s supposedly a combination of Nara (aboriginal for companion) and Elle.
Birgit K says
FABRIC ME!
Depending on what source you believe, my name means “shining light”, “exhalted one” and/or “to shine, to guide, to help”. For the longest time, as a child, I was however under the impression that my name meant “the hammer” (?!) – I don’t know who told me that or why it stuck for so long.
Needless to say, I wasn’t too fond of my name during that time, even though it was one of the most popular names around the time of my birth. Since I figured out it has nothing to do with a hammer, I’ve loved it a lot more!
Kathryn says
FABRIC ME!! My parents both independently chose their three favorite names. It just so happened that my day’s three in order were Alice, Kathryn, Emily and my mom’s three in order were Emily, Kathryn, Alice! So it was obvious to them that Kathryn was it!
Kaitlyn says
FABRIC ME! My parents had never heard of my name when they found it in a baby book and liked the sound of it. They actually saw a different spelling of my name and “made up” their own spelling. Now my name and its spelling are super common… so there must have been lots of other parents out there doing the same thing as my parents back in the 80s!
Amanda says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Amanda… the third most popular name for the year I was born. How original of them… I grew up with about 8 other Amandas in every class (along with all the Jennifers and Sarahs).
Ashley says
Fabric me! There is no meaning behind my name. My mo chose my first name and my dad my middle name. Both popular names at the time.
Brianne P. says
Fabric Me!!
My name means “strong, lioness of god”!
H. Hamel says
FABRIC ME! My name means Grace…although I have none, I’m as clumsy as they come!
katie says
fabric me!

emily says
Fabric me! My name comes from the Newheart show which h was on TV whilemy mom was in labor with me! My middle name also comes from the show.

FABRIC ME!
My parents named me after my maternal grandfather’s mother, of the same name. Only a few years ago did I learn that same woman actually abandoned my grandfather as a child! Thanks for the namesake, I guess?

FABRIC ME (o please!!!)
My parents had a glamourous Russian friend and they settled on her name. My dad wanted to call me Cynthia after an old girlfriend and my mum wanted Samuela (Pronounced samwaila). I figure I lucked out with Kim!!
Diana says
Fabric me! I was named after princess Diana.
JulieW says
FABRIC ME!!
I was going to be named Tiffany but my grandma(my mother’s mother) couldn’t say Tiffany so my mother changed it to Julie. Then my other grandma(my father’s mother) went around telling everyone that my name was Julie Ann and that made my mother mad so at the last min my name was changed to Julie Marie. Lovely family dynamic there. LOL
Justin C says
FABRIC ME!
Kaitlyn says
Fabric Me!
My mom was on bed rest when she was pregnant with me, and she almost tricked my dad into thinking she wanted to name me Kalulah! Thankfully its Kaitlyn :-)
Maggi says
FABRIC ME! I want my first sewing experience to be curtains for my front family room!!
My real name is actually Margaret Mary. I was named after my grandmother, whose name is Mary Margaret. And she was named after her mother, who is Margaret Mary. So therefore, I am named after my grandma and great-grandma!! My first daughter has the middle name of Margaret, but we didn’t keep the connection of ‘Margaret’ and ‘Mary’ going – maybe one of my kiddos will;)
Kristin says
FABRIC ME! My parents just liked it; no real story behind it.
Marie B says
FABRIC ME!
I think my parents just liked it! As far as i know, there isn’t any special significance to it.
Ariel says
FABRIC ME!
My first name, Ariel, my parents picked from a baby name book. I love it, even though I get a bunch of little mermaid jokes. I’m older than the movie though :-) It’s also the name of a character in Shakespeare’s The Tempest and the name of one of Uranus’ moons.
My middle name, Solange, is also my mom’s middle name (and Beyonce’s little sister’s name).
Rose says
FABRIC ME! Please! My mom says she just always loved the name Rose but it’s also her middle name. I love it because it is short, not super common, and I never have to spell it!
Anna Reinhard says
FABRIC ME!
My name, Anna, was chosen after a platypus puppet on Mr. Rogers. For real. My four year old sister loved the show and suggested the name to my parents after the platypus family had a baby named Anna.
Jennifer Helene Lyons says
FABRIC ME pretty please :) My first name has no real significance but my middle name, Helene, is a blend of my two grandmothers’ names, Irene and Helen. I’ve always sort of wished Helene was my first name :)
Danielle says
FABRIC ME! My parents never told me about choosing my first name (I guess they just liked it) but my Dad got to pick my second name and he picked Valentina, after the day they got engaged (Valentine’s day). Very romantic huh, and a pretty cool name if I say so myself.
Love you guys!
Greetz from the Netherlands,
Danielle
Sandi says
FABRIC ME!
I am a fabric-o-holic!
Sarah {20State} says

Brianne says
FABRIC ME! My grandmother’s name is part of my first name
Jasmine says
FABRIC ME!
Kerry says
FABRIC ME!
I always thought I was named for the county in Ireland (which, technically, is why my parents agreed to it) but I found out my brother actually suggested it and his inspiration came from a cute girl in his class. LOL
megan says
FABRIC ME!
my parents chose my name based on a childhood friend of my mother.
Mandie says
FABRIC ME! Mandie is after the Barry Manalow song he wrote for his dog…. I love that my parents loved the song and spelled my name different than everyone!
