After 10,000 interesting name origin stories, random.org has selected our winners as… Beth (who says “my dad picked it out and to this day I’m whole heartily a daddy’s girl.”) and Chelsea (who’s name story is: “My parents got my name from the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond. ‘Chelsea’ was played by Jane Fonda”) Congrats!
I realize from the name Online Fabric Store, you might have trouble guessing what this online store sells, so allow me to solve that mystery for ya. Fabric! And seemingly every kind of fabric – like upholstery, decor, quilting, apparel and even garden fabric. Which means that this week’s two winners (who are each getting $250 to spend there) could tackle anything from sewing some pillow covers or making a duvet to redoing the curtains in an entire room. And the cool thing about their system is that the more yardage you buy, the cheaper each yard gets – and once you get over that $50 mark, your shipping in the US is free.

Mel Lee says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after both grandmothers (Mary Lynn and Emily) combined to make my name Mary Emily. I mostly go by Mel now though, a nick name created using my initiales by my 5th grade teacher.
Annie says
“FABRIC ME!” I was the second of an unexpected set of twins. My sister got the planned name and I was named after the babysitter who was at home watching my three older brothers.
Laura says
FABRIC ME!
My name is Laura, just like about 4 other girls in every class I ever took. And it’s funny you ask about the origin of our name, because in 3rd grade we made a personal crest where, among other things, we had to draw something that signified where our name came from. So I asked my parents and they said they just liked the sound of it. Nothing more. I was SO embarrassed! It was third grade after all. I made up a lie that I was named after an old movie star. Laura Who?? Not sure. But my classmates didn’t ask! :)
Rachel B. says
FABRIC ME!! My name actually came from my moms best friend. One of my mom’s friends always called her Wanda Rach (my mom’s name was Wanda) and so my parents debated and debated but finally decided on Rachel because of her. Funny side note- if I were a boy, I would’ve been named Ross, and that was way before Friends was on tv!
Melinda George says
Fabric ME! I was named after both my grandmother’s. My first name Melinda after my maternal grandma and my middle name May after my paternal grandma’s middle name. It’s nice having the name of people you love.
Michelle says
Fabric me!! My mom just liked my first name but my two middles names are after important people!
Amy says
FABRIC ME!!
My name, Amy Elizabeth, is what my mom named her baby doll when she was 3 years old because she thought “it was the most beautiful name in the world.” Then she used the name for me, her real life baby doll!
Angela says
FABRIC ME!
I am named after my great aunt Angelina. All I know about her is that she was super short and petite. I suspect that is why I ended up being so short — my entire family, including my younger siblings, tower over my 5 foot, 2.5 inches. If I got to choose a new name, I think I’d keep mine. However, when I was younger, I did want a more unique name. Fun Fact: I will be getting a new last name in 27 days! :)
Kelle says
FABRIC ME!
Thing about my name is, it is pronounced “KEH-lee”, like “Kelly”, but Siri pronounces it “kel”, which is, funnily enough, the nickname only my husband, brother, and close friends call me. Siri is my bestie, apparently.
Brittany C. says
FABRIC ME! My mom named me after a character on a soap opera.
rebecca says
FABRIC ME!
I legally changed my name when I was 25, to the name my mother had originally wanted for a daughter. So Rebecca, to acknowledge my new present. Hope, to express my, wait for it, HOPE for the future. And my last name? Now my grandmother’s last name, to more properly suit my past. Not one minute of regret for doing it, in 10 years!
Jennie says
FABRIC ME!
My name, Jennifer, means white wave. There’s no special family meaning to it – i wasnt named for about 3 days and then my parents decided i “looked like a Jenny” and so i was named!
shevy says
fabric me!!
Jen. says
Fabric me! My parents thought they were being original … naming me Jennifer … in the 1970s. My dad especially loved it, and I like it just fine.
Katie says
FABRIC ME!
When my mom was pregnant 33 years ago with me, they didn’t do sonograms unless they thought something was amiss. Since my mom was healthy, they just had to guess if I was a boy or girl . My mom carried me exactly the same as my brother, so she assumed I was a boy, too. They had a boy’s name picked out — Ryan James — but no girl name. So when I was born — SUPRISE — they had to come up with something quick. My dad picked Katherine Elaine because he “just liked it!”
mallory says
Fabric me. My mom named my after the TV show Family Ties.
Natalie R. says
FABRIC ME!!
My parents were so convinced I was a boy I didn’t have a name until I was 2 days old when my dad finally thought of Natalie…

FABRIC ME!
My great grandma’s name was Rebecca.
Virginia says
FABRIC ME! My mom liked my name and my dad is from Virginia.
Jodi says
Fabric Me!
My mom had my name picked out when she was a young teenager. She just loved the name and told everyone in the family for years they couldn’t use it because she was saving it for her first born daughter, which was me :)
I like my name, I don’t think I would change it. She picked a unique middle name for me too, a mix of my dad’s parent’s first names.
She did good! :)
Erin says
FABRIC ME!! My parents wanted an Irish name and this was the pick!
Carolyn says
Fabric me! No special meaning at all behind my name, and I always liked it. Though as a kid I always wanted a nickname and never had one :-(
Lara says
FABRIC ME!
My middle name was my dad’s nickname:)
Julie says
FABRIC ME! I always wished it was Julia instead of Julie.
Elizabeth says
FABRIC ME!!
No meaning that my parents have ever told me, outside of it being given to them by “the angels”. I’m guessing they found it in a baby book. ha!
Tannie Smith says
Fabric Me!!!!
My name is something my dad picked up while living in South Africa for 2 years. He loved it. I have mixed feelings. Much like the reactions I receive, ranging from “oh.” to “pretty” to “were your parents hippies?” I have grown to tolerove it. (Tolerate + Love = Tolerove.) :-)
Yuki says
FABRIC ME! My name means luck and happiness in Japanese!
Amanda says
Fabric me!!
Bronwyn says
FABRIC ME
My mum loved Bronwyn, a Welsh name, as she was best friends with a little girl Bronwyn, who when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, answered “a mermaid”
Rebecca says
FABRIC ME! My name was chosen because it’s in the Bible, but I found out in my late teens that my Dad had really wanted to name me Norma. No offense to the Normas out there, but I’m glad my Mom won that one!
Lindsey S says
FABRIC ME!!
I was going to be Hanna, Abby, or Julia- but then “the Bionic Woman” came on in the delivery room. One look at the name Lindsey (Wagner) my mom was hooked! Funny thing is, I tell people that when I introduce myself, and tell they will never forget my name after that, and they never do! :o)
Sergiu Z says
FABRIC ME!
Ariel says
Fabric Me!
My dad started reading through the Bible and asking my mom about all the names that caught his eye. They got all the way to Isaiah 29. Funnily enough, they picked Eric as my boy name which ended up being the prince’s name in the Little Mermaid 7 years later.
Bonnie says
Fabric Me!
I’m named after my aunt. It took my parents a few days to figure out what to call me. I love my name.
Jessie says
Fabric me! My mom named me. It’s technically Jessica, which she gave me if I ever wanted a more adult name, but really she just wanted to name me Jessie, I’m her ” Jessie Leigh”. Note- I don’t like Jessica, I would have preferred just being Jessie Leigh. :)
karen says
FABRIC ME!
Your post earlier inspired me to work on my curtains!
Kate says
FABRIC ME!
My parents wanted a short name (like theirs) and nothing that could get turned into a schoolyard taunt
Hope says
FABRIC ME
Amanda M says
FABRIC ME!!! My name came from an ancestor – really unusual, I know. I’ve always liked my name… although at one point I was wishing my mom had picked Cimarron instead. I think she picked well.
kimyen says
FABRIC ME!

Angie says
Fabric me! Name came from a show back in 80’s it was short-lived. I like to pretend it came from the rolling stones song “Angie.”

I have the same name as my mother.
Joy says
FABRIC ME!
I was a surprise, and my mom didn’t have any particular name picked out – she was just happy I was okay, so went with “Joy”. My middle name has more of a story – I was born on Anne Frank’s birthday, so her name became my middle name. :)
Jess says
FABRIC ME!
I was named after my great grandfather Jesse, and also the Carly Simon song ‘Jesse’ about some guy who broke her heart….cheers mum! ahaha
Claire says
FABRIC ME!
My parents didn’t know my gender. My name was the only girl name on the list. It was inspired by a young woman who sailed solo across the Atlantic a little before I was born.
Kellie R. says
FABRIC ME! My parents both liked my name…no cool story to share unfortunately. But I like my name and I really like how it’s spelled. To me, it seems like a more feminine way to spell it.

Candice says
FABRIC ME! No special story for my name! :)
Kim P. says
Fabric Me!
My mom said my name, Kimberly, was the name of a popular soap-opera character at the time. That is not exactly the way I wish my name had been chosen, but oh well!
