still looking for my lucky find. I seem to miss out on the good stuff or the “fund” on craigslist turns out to be in horrible shape. One day…

My husband and I are still renters (hopefully that will change in the not too distant future!), but my luckiest home improvement moment has been scoring lots of quality used furniture for cheap via craigslist, or free via extended family. Just about all of our furniture is used (except for our mattress, a desk, & a few end tables) but I like to think our townhouse is pretty cohesive and aesthetically pleasing (it also helps that since reading YHL I’ve gotten my hubby to help me paint/upholster some of our finds to make them work better)! We get lots of compliments on it when friends and family visit, and everyone is always surprised to find out our furniture is on its (at least) 2nd life. :)

After 5 MONTHS (omg!) of waiting on a short sale house we retracted our offer and the same day put an offer on the house that finally became our home (after only 3 more months of waiting.) I think we were just lucky to get a home in the end! :)

I think our luck has come in the form of free furniture: a Thomasville dining set (that we’re about to refinish), an awesome antique buffet, and some comfy living room furniture. We love free!

I think we really lucked out getting the house in the location (location, location, location) we love. But the funniest moment in our house happened when we tried out the laundry shoot. It happened one fateful afternoon, when I was too lazy to drag the laundry down to the basement. So, from the second floor, I dropped one piece of laundry down the teeny tiny shoot at a time. Most of it got stuck and my husband had to use a broom handle to shove it down. In the pile of clothes that came out in the basement was an extra large pair of (dirty) granny panties! After screaming and laughing, we decided they are our lucky panties!

My luckiest home find was a set of dishes in my parents’ attic. They just retro enough to be cool, and the colors perfectly match my decor. Plus, they have sentimental value because my parents registered for them as wedding gifts when they got married.

JOSS ME! Craiglist has been our good luck charm lately. We scored a 1200 + valued table and chairs for $250. It was in perfect condition… now to just find something else to go in the room!

Joss Me! A lucky renovation story…we had a beautiful stone fireplace in our first (and current) home, unfortunately it had huge brass doors attached to the stone. They just had to go but we didn’t know we would remove them without damaging the stone. A month after we moved in lightning struck our chimney and popped those puppies right off! While there was exterior damage (thank goodness for insurance) the stone fireplace on the inside was in perfect shape and now minus a huge brass eyesore:)

My luckiest find would be a toss up between my dumpster desk chair and my $20 Goodwill desk. Both were just the style I was looking for at a fabulous price. A similar style of the chair retails for around $114 and similar desks sell for around $250. I swoon everytime I see/use them!

JOSS ME! My luckiest decorating/furniture find was a beautiful piano in great shape for dirt cheap at a garage sale. I’d been browsing craigslist for months, but all the decent ones were too much money. I had exactly the amount of cash on me that he was asking for it. Score!

Joss Me – my lucky (or unlucky) story is that I went with a broker to find a new apartment for my husband’s (boyfriend at the time) and mine first apartment together. We went to look at one that he was listing. Then he took me to a place that he had seen on Craigslist. The listing had no pictures on it (so I guess I wouldn’t have gone to see it myself), but the apartment was spacious and gorgeous. I did end up having to pay the broker his fee, but four years later, we’re still in the same apartment. LOVE IT!

Our luckiest moment in our house was basically SCORING on the closing costs. We ended up with a couple extra Gs in our pockets which were SORELY needed to um…buy furniture and replace an electrical panel and get our broken garage door fixed and replace the furnace and…well, the list goes on. We burned those extra Gs pretty quick, but it was a pretty lucky start :)

Our luckiest moment included both of our houses. Our starter home was sold by us to an older couple a few days after we decided to try and sell it on our own.
Our current home was found by accident after driving down a side street and seeing the for sale sign. And it’s the perfect home for us – older home plenty of space and actually fits our contemporary decorating style! Plus we got it cheap!!!

Luckiest moment – we were going to buy a different house and our realtor suggested with look at one up the block that we previously dismissed – just to see how they renovated the home. Turns out it was the home for us. Thank god we agreed to take a look!

Joss me! Our house was lucky. We bought a foreclosure and made the offer without knowing the bank was fixing the broken windows, repairing the holes in the walls, painting, and giving us a new fridge and stove!

Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. Our “luckiest” moment is finding a great place in a great area for reduced rent because the landlord hadn’t been able to rent it out for over a year. Thank God. It is quite a blessing.

I was lucky enough to score 4 chairs off craigslist that match a wonderful Crate and Barrel table I also found on craigslist. They are a match made in heaven. Luck? or just in the right place at the right time.

My most recent lucky find was a HUGE antique Moroccan chest (my hubby said it looks like an ancient U-haul, it has wooden wheels and an axle!!)that the guy was selling because his girlfriend didn’t want it in the house because the ex girlfriend bought it. $40.00 – whaa??
Thanks for the chance!

Our luckiest house moment was a blessing in disguise… We did not close on our new house until three weeks AFTER our third child was born, meaning we brought our newborn home to my inlaws house. Best three weeks ever – they could not have been more helpful, and when we finally did move in I had the medical clearance to help out!

Our luckiest moment was when we decided to take our home off the market after 10 months of trying to sell it! I have spent the last little while putting my heart and soul into revamping it and have found a whole new love for my home!

JOSS ME!! One of my luckiest DIY moments was a headboard for our master bedroom. Being in a condo I didn’t have the tools or space to create even the frame from plywood. I came across the most random large handmade wood frame with plywood backing on Craigslist one day. It was only $25 and super heavy duty and the perfect size. Might have had another life as a school bulletin board. Months prior I had found a curtain panel I liked at Pier One for 75% off that would match the master bedroom. Searched high and low and couldn’t find another matching panel and it sat collecting dust. Decided to marry the curtain panel and frame with some batting and it actually came out perfect which is rare for my DIY projects!

My best deal was my mattress. When I was picking it out I randomly told the owner of the store that I was buying other bedroom furniture from West Elm and he told me he has a deal with them where if you buy furniture there, you can get 20% off at his store – what a steal!

Our luckiest moment was finding/buying our early-1900’s home in the first place! We first laid eyes on our girl (who we, coincidentally, nicknamed Clara), which searching the web for potentials during the end of our long-distance relationship. Clara, it had turned out, had been on the market for 6 months, and just went through a price drop. Strangely enough, she was also owned by our wedding photographer!
After doing a walk-through, we put in an offer the first week of July 2008, and closed in less than 3 weeks. 2 weeks later, we held our rehearsal dinner in our backyard, and got married the next day.
Clara’s still a work in progress (and a bit of a money pit), but we can’t imagine our life without her.

Recent lucky find–we were putting in two pass-through openings between my kitchen and living room. My brother-in-law mentioned that stained glass would look pretty hanging in the openings. I happened to go to the ReStore and found two old cabinet doors with beautiful green stained glass in them, both doors for $35!
We removed the stained glass and once I finish painting the pass-throughs, they will look beautiful hanging between the rooms. Perfect size, color and price. I still can’t believe it.

…and my luckiest home improvement moment was marrying my loving husband 1 year ago! We are just starting out, so I don’t have much of a home improvement resume yet…BUT my husband has definitely improved my home in that it wouldn’t be home without him! Thanks, Petersiks!

JOSS ME…our luckiest moment probably had to be getting our house. We were the second offer on it and they only countered to us because the first offer’s real estate agent didn’t file the paperwork correctly. While we were negotiating back to the seller there were also 2 more offers that came in on the house!

JOSS ME!We were lucky to get the house we wanted. We toured it at an open house, and we knew it was the one we wanted. Then, it went under contract. Boo. Luckily, just days before we sold our house and were in a position to make an offer, it came back on the market!
