Luckiest home find was a beautiful solid oak, Amish-made table in perfect condition with 6 matching ladder-back chairs for $140 on my local CL, and being the first person to inquire about it! :) The person selling it just didn’t need it anymore and had priced it to sell quickly…I’m guessing she could have sold it for 4-5 times as much? Joss-y me! :)

I fell in love with DKNY’s Peacock Blue Poet Bedding set, but the duvet cover alone was over $460 and being on an educator’s salary, no way this was going to happen. Then Macy’s had a big clearance sale and it was there! I got the duvet cover, 2 European shams and 2 standard shams for a total of $150- no kidding! The universe was smiling on me that day:-)

Lucky moment= recently inheriting a beautiful beige plaid carriage blanket that belonged to my grandmother’s grandfather. I can picture it someday gracing a worn-looking brown leather chair in an equestrian-themed guest bedroom… :)

When we were house hunting, we were running out of time and put an offer in on a house that we really liked (but didn’t love) and I said, “why can’t we just find a house like that,” speaking of a house around the corner from the one we were moving forward with.
Three weeks later, our short sale house offer fell through and the house I referenced went on the market! We scooped it up and I never felt as lucky!
Pam says
JOSS ME! Like someone else said, the luckiest moment for us did not feel that way at the time – our first contract fell through, and then we found a much better option!

I’d say our luckiest house-related happening is that we managed to sell our first house within a week of putting it on the market. Thank goodness I didn’t have to try to keep the house show-ready for long, since my daughter was almost 2 and I was pregnant with my son. I just didn’t have the energy!

My lucky home moment is the highway to get to our house opened after severe flooding in the area the day before we closed on the house (and our house had no flood damage)
Abby says
Joss Me! We got a great price on a house that the owners were ready to dump. It was perfect timing.

JOSS ME! My luckiest home improvements occur when I track an item for weeks (and don’t forget about it), waiting for it to go on sale and then take the plunge!

I’m going to say getting our new house was one of the luckier moments as well. We looked at it the day after it was listed and made an offer, which was initially rejected due to our contingency. Then we got an offer on our old house the same week and put in another offer on the new house. By that point, the sellers had found out he had cancer and were in Vegas getting treatment. They almost pulled the house off the market but after a few days of crossing our fingers, they accepted our offer. We had to go through a few hoops to get closed since the seller was sick but after a couple extra weeks all was good and we were able to move in.

Joss me! I found the cutest little framed print at Marshalls for $.70 and used it in my old home’s laundry room. I paid in coins just because I could!

JOSS ME! My luckiest moment was moving to NYC not knowing a single sole or having a penny to my name, with a dog… and finding a rent controlled apartment half a block from Central Park. It’ll be 5 years in February!

I’m not so sure I’d call anything in my house shopping/home decor experiences lucky… I tend to run on the opposite side of that, but I was fortunate enough to NOT apply the first color grout that I chose for my last tiling project – and picked a MUCH better one the second time around. (Sound familiar, John and Sherry?)

My luckiest home related find happened when we found our house. It had been sitting empty for two years. The builder had already dropped the asking price $50K, and our offer was another 25K less, and he accepted… oh, and we made the offer without my husband having seen it.

My luckiest moment was attending a yard sale of a neighbor’s and finding a large wooden display shelf that was once used to display candles in a gift shop. The piece is going to be painted and used to display china in a dining room!

Joss me! I feel so lucky that we were able to purchase, move into, and renovate/update the 250+ year old farmhouse that has been in my family for over 200 years. The house has so much history and character and I love the fact that my kids are creating their own memories there too! My grandmother has an in-law ‘apartment’ in the house too which is just frosting on the cake. Thanks for the opportunity!

Joss me! Found a new-to-us sectional on the way home from consigning our old, too-big couch. The price was only $30 different between what we paid and what we got from the old one!

We found our house, which was built in 1925 the day after it went on the market! It is perfect for us, with just the right amount of improvements needed. Not too many, and not too few. Just perfect!!

JOSS ME! My fave pieces came from a friend at work who was down-sizing. I heard she was moving and asked her to let me know if she was getting rid of anything. So one day she packed up all she could fit in her car and brought it to work, and I got some amazing lamps, mirrors and paintings to furnish our home!

Luckiest moment: When we first bought our house 5 years ago, we really wanted the Pottery Barn Sullivan square ottoman for the living room… but not for $1k. After calling the nearest outlet store weekly and never having any luck, I found it there while randomly driving through the area (an hour from home)… marked down to $600… on a day when all furniture was an additional 40% off. Hauled that baby home in a heartbeat!

Joss ME! My luckiest moment came when on a whim I wanted to create a headboard for our new guest room. I found the perfect sized board in a pile of scrape wood the previous home owners had left behind and had exactly enough fabric in my stash to cover it! Zero dollars and one hour!

Joss me! My grandma gave me a copper sanitizing unit from the college she went to, I use it as an end table. It’s cool and holds memories, I love it.

Luck. Hmm, I guess we’re lucky to have such wet weather in the Pac NW that we don’t have to pay to water our lawn while the rest of the country is in a heat wave? (sorry… it’s all I’ve got)

This may not be my luckiest moment, but it was the most recent. I just happened to stop in one of my favorite stores the other day and an art piece I had previously eye-ing had just gone on sale an hour before I stopped in for 70% off. It was meant to be mine :)

My luckiest moment was when we put in offers on 4 homes only to be outbid on every single one, but then found by far the best, biggest, and CHEAPEST house and snagged it!
emily @ thirtyeight20 says
JOSS ME! Our luckiest home improvement moment was when we were walking around downtown Baltimore and saw that a local business had gone under and was being dismantled by our favorite local salvage center. We saw in the window that they had an essentially brand new two-bay industrial prep sink — exactly what we were looking for for our industrial kitchen renovation — ready to be hauled out. So we secured it right on the spot for $250, which is about 10 to 15% of retail price!
