By far, our luckiest moment was a big hail storm that hit our neighborhood. 3 of the 4 sides of our aluminum siding were damaged and we recieved a check from our insurance. We were also fortunate to find a good roofing/siding company that replaced all of our aluminum siding with brand new Hardie Board, all for the cost of our insurance deductable! The Hardie Board also comes with a 50 year manufacturer’s warranty.

Luckiest moment… our luckiest moment (or year in this case) would be that our old washing machine lastest the whole first year of our marriage! Just gave us enough time to save up for a new one.

My luckiest moment was when we found our house. It was on the boarder of two neighborhoods so it wasn’t showing up in our realtors searches. When we stepped inside for the first time we instantly fell in love AND they accepted our first offer!! Now it’s been a year since we’ve moved in and we’re still struggling to decorate.

JOSS ME! We haven’t had ANY lucky moments! Everything has been a nightmare… seriously! Well, our houses survived the big earthquake on Easter of last year… does that count?

My luckiest moment was when I asked our landlord if he would have our carpets professionally cleaned before the arrival of our baby–and he offered to put all new carpet down instead! It was a lot of work moving the furniture, but it made a huge difference!

JOSS ME!… the luckiest I think I’ve been was when we inherited a bunch of vintage furniture from my husband’s stepmother’s parents. No one in her family wanted it; they all thought it was so “dated and old”, and it was on it’s way to charity when they offered it to us. Everything was near-pristine MCM. We rented a U-haul trailer and my husband drove from New Jersey to Texas with a dining table, 6 chairs, matching buffet, 8 ft long couch, two side tables, two bed frames, and a matching dresser and vanity. That’s basically 80% of our furniture, and we love every piece. I can’t imagine the cost (not to mention time) of trying to find all of that at thrift stores or on CL. It was $400 for the trailer and then gas for the drive.

JOSS ME! My luckiest house moment came when I was just about to give up. My husband and I had our old house for sale for months, we were already in the new one and two house payments were killing us. Then, out of the blue, we got a buyer who closed just days after the birth of our other little miracle–our first son!

I’ve yet to have a home-related lucky moment, I guess. We rent and our place is styled like a college kid’s dorm room (that is to say, not at all). So maybe this will help me transform our space a bit?

My luckiest house moment happened a couple of years ago. My husband and I went back and forth with sellers of the house we wanted but could not strike a deal, sad. But a couple of weeks later, the sellers contacted us again and ended up accepting our offer so we ended up getting the house we wanted after all!! We still live here and still feel very lucky!!

My luckiest home improvement moment was seeing our favorite house on the market as a bank repo for exactly the price we thought was fair to pay! We saw the house 9 month prior with a price tag that was $60,000 higher. We passed and kept looking but never forgot the great bones, floorplan, lot and school district. We made an offer the day we saw it as the bank’s listing. Oh, happy, lucky day! That was 14 years ago and we still love our place!

One time when I was walking home in Brooklyn I found a fabulous metal sculpture sitting on the curb waiting for trash pickup. I loved it and took it home. After googling the name on the sculpture I found out it is by a Haitian artist who makes art out of metal oil drums, and similiar pieces are going for $500-1000. I love it and wonder who was crazy enough to throw it away!

Our luckiest home-related venture was lucking into some FABULOUS mid-century modern furniture. A neighbor of a friend was selling his parents’ house stocked full of original mid-century gems. My friend connected us with her neighbor and we helped him sell some of the furniture on Craigslist and for payment, he gave us our favorites (a Paul McCobb dining set among them!) We still can’t believe our good fortune every time we re-tell the story.

My luckiest moment was finding my great grandmother’s vintage Vogue cover poster book when we were cleaning out her house. She left them to me and I felt so lucky! These Vogue magazine covers from the 20s and earlier look so beautiful minimally framed all over my house.
