Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Greatest piece was a wonderful midcentury teak desk I scored at a garage sale for $40 but then sadly had to give away during a move. Found out later it was an $800 desk. Oh well, at least the charity I donated to scored.

We recently picked up a mcm dresser from craigslist that is being used as our tv stand. It could use a little fixin’ up, but for now we love it and it has great bones!

Our favorite piece is a barrister bookcase my mother-in-law saved for my husband when my father-in-law’s firm was updating. My husband isn’t a laywer but LOVES to read, and he fills it with his favorites.

My favorite piece of furniture I have is my dresser – it’s an old dresser that used to be my dad’s that my grandpa fixed up for me. And since my dad passed away when I was 8 I hold it very dear to my heart.

I have two pieces I love! One an $8 goodwill wing chair that my husband and I revamped with grey flat paint, grey herringbone fabric and brass nail heads. The second a craigslist $15 dollar side board that was dinged up. Another hubby and me project. :) We gave it a nice bright coat of orange paint, vintage knobs, and lined the two drawers with navy chevron paper!
I could so use this book! I like to collect a lot of different pieces and styles and I have a really hard time putting them together. I love finding or revamping pieces but that’s about where it ends. Our master bedroom is the biggest offender! It is suppose to be where I feel at peace and comfortable and it’s all mismatched, cluttered on one side and sparse on the other!
All this to say I would be delighted to win this time!
Thank you for reading, and I still love your blog. :)

I have two different antique wooden trunks that my dad has restored. The one I gave my husband for our 5 year anniversary (traditional gift: wood)is our coffee table in the living room. They’re funky and old and fit in just about anywhere!

We have a chest of drawers that orginally belonged to my mom’s mom’s uncle that I think is pretty awesome. It definitely shows its age, but in a really good way. And my mom and I are arguing (nicely) over who gets to keep an A-Mazing secretary chest that belonged to my great-grandmother.

FURNISH ME! An very old Singer sewing machine table that we found on the curb! Couldn’t believe someone was throwing it out.

Furnish me! We just got this fabulous entry table off Craigslist for $20. I painted it candy apple red and love it to pieces.

My favorite pieces are the ones made by family, I have a quilt that my grandmother handmade for me and a toybox and bench that my dad built. I have embroidered pillows from my aunt and a wool braided rug my great aunt made. While they are all beautiful and sentimental pieces, they make my house a little more country than is my taste, so I am trying to mix in more modern pieces and make it work.

Furnish me! Our neighbors gave us a console table when they retired and moved. We adore it!

The greatest piece I own is a great dining table from the 50’s I picked up for 100 dollars and stripped and refinished myself. I’ll keep it forever.

My favorite pieces are a set of cherry, living room coffee table and side table from my grandma. She bought them new in the 1960’s and got rid of them when she redecorated in the 90’s. I didn’t fully appreciate them in my college dorm room, but I love them now. They are so well made and hipster cool!

FURNISH ME!! We scored a pair of vintage wooden chairs at a moving sale. We stained them and got new pillows for them and they rock!

FURNISH ME!!
By far the best piece in our home is our dining room table, that we scored on clearance at World Market for 200 beans! It has so much character and was marked down from $1000! But what is best about it is that it was the first time we didn’t just by a matchy matchy set, so we got ourselves some great chairs from Target and a leather bench from craigslist!
Sarah says
Furnish Me! Unfortunately I have no pieces I am in love with right now.

I am very proud of the coffee table we got for a major deal at the Savlation Army. It was in terrible shape, water stains and major scratches. A lot of elbow grease later, it is gorgeous and the scratches just add to the character.

Right now, the only “real” furniture I own is my desk, which I bought unfinished and have painted a bunch of times. I’m in college, so I spend lots of time at my desk and love how it makes me feel so grown up!

I am absolutely in love with our dining table. I was able to snag a great deal and get a clearance price while at world market this past year. However, my favorite ‘steal’ is this $8 estate sale find which is a beautiful painting for a beer company on top of an old beer crate lid. It looks stunning hanging above our bar cart.

My favorite piece is the secretary desk I inherited from my grandmother. She certainly didn’t keep arts and crafts supplies in the drawers for a toddler like I do, but it’s a centerpiece in our living room just as it was in hers.
Mary K says
FURNISH ME! I have two. the first is a side table that is about 60 years old. It was a gift given to my aunt by my father that he purchased with his first paycheck. The other is an old treadle sewing machine that was my mother in laws. We brought it all the way from India.

I think one of our best pieces is our TV console we scored at the Crate and Barrel Outlet for a two-digit number. All because someone put one of the sides on upside down and it made the shelves slant.
