Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece of furniture that I currently own is a flat top steamer trunk that we use as an end table. I got it from a family friend when she had a garage sale. It’s beautiful.

My favorite piece of furniture is a table that now lives in my studio. (I am an artist and have a studio at home). I purchased this table years ago, at Diversity Thrift for $15, when I still had my single girl apartment. It has an old wooden base with four legs coming from a center beam, and the top if 50’s formica with typical triangle shapes printed on it. I think that it is actually two pieces from different tables that someone made into a frankenstein round table. Great work table!

The greatest piece of furniture I own has to be our wood coffee table. I was driving home one day and noticed some cabriole legs sticking out of the dumpster. I stopped the car and jumped to it’s rescue. It’s been cleaned up and has a new glass top to protect it’s beautiful brass inlay. It’s quite a show stopper and I will forever be a believer in dumpster diving.

I have an old type-tray that my dad converted into a side table and covered in a piece of glass for me. Inside the little compartments I keep mementos and sweet little things that I love to look at. Everyone that visits loves to check it out for new additions.

The “greatest piece” I currently own is my couch. I splurged on it and will never regret it! If I had a million dollars, this would be the couch I’d STILL buy over! :)

FURNISH ME! My husband built our now 9 month old daughter’s crib before she arrived last fall. It is simply beautiful and built by his own two hands. We hope it’s in the family for years to come and that she loves it as much as we do when her little one’s come around in the VERY distant future.

I love my granny’s vanity made by her father with orange crates. I never knew that detail until I was well in high school. The vanity’s covered in a gorgeous skirt, glass top and decked out with two beautiful lamps with crystal detailing. I have such fond memories of her getting ready for the day at her vanity. Always in my heart!

FURNISH ME… my dresser. My mom bought it for my nursery before I was born and it’s such a sturdy, classic piece that I still use it today!

Furnish me please! :)
Best thing we own? Prob a leather reclining club chair. Looks exactly like one from Pottery Barn but got ours for only $450 instead of $1400. Still a lot of money, especially for us, but it’s a great piece that is timeless and comfortable. Plus it has husband’s seal of approval!

I’m not sure we have any pieces that are killer, to be honest. We’re a fairly young family and we’re military, so we move a lot. That means stuff gets damaged a lot, and we have to try to make our home not just about “things” but how we live with them. Having said that, our distressed farmhouse style dining table keeps getting knocked around with the moves, but still looks great!
Mallory @ R. Simple Life says
FURNISH ME! I think my favorite piece of furniture is the headboard I built for my husband while he was out of town training for the Air Force.

Furnish me: my favorite thing in our house is a pair of round club chairs we found at a thrift store for $5 each!

Our in progress antique desk- Free Ninety Nine off of craigslist from someone who wanted to give it a good home… now hopefully the 6 hours of stripping varnish will be worth it once it’s re-stained!

I got an old office chair at a surplus auction that for years I just sat in the corner. I finally found this great fabric and tried my hand at recovering the old dingy chair and it is now proudly placed out in my living room front and center. It isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I did it and it looks pretty darn good!

We still have an apartment full of hand-me-down furniture and mis-matched pieces, but we finally bought an entire wall of matching bookcases. For two bibliophiles, the six 6′ bookcases were a necessity!

My husband and I just finished building a sofa table and it is currently my favorite piece. Maybe because it took a million hours to finish!!! ;)
Andrea Joy says
FURNISH ME! (What a great giveaway!) My favorite piece in our wee bitty apartment is a consol table I scored, of all places, on Overstock.com! It’s distressed/shabby chic white wood on the legs and body with drawers and a glossy dark finished wood on top. I LOVE it and can’t wait to find a place for it in our new house!

FURNISH ME!
So hard to choose one thing! I think our vintage 1870s upright piano (which almost ended up rolling down the street because they only brought 2 delivery guys to bring it up our long flight of outdoor stairs).
Julie says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is a gorgeous restoration hardware dining table and chairs that we splurged on (though at sale price that made it less than other tables and chairs at places like ethan allen or arhaus were selling at) – it’s beautiful and it’s so nice having christmas dinners around it. Solid as a rock too.
Denise says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I own would have to be the king size 4-poster bed frame my husband and I got from Craigslist for super cheap. Initially painted white, we spend 3 full weekends, stripping paint, sanding down to the original wood, then restaining a rich dark cherry. Definitely worth all the extra effort.
Kami says
“FURNISH ME!” the armoire and platform bed are cherished pieces.

My husband actually just inherited our “greatest piece” from his mother — a centuries-old buffet from Holland that she purchased as an antique when they were living there. For us, the value is not in its age or its beauty (although it is both old and beautiful). It’s the memories it brings us of many, many meals in her dining room with all of the family gathered there.
Julie says
FURNISH ME! I honestly don’t think I could pick a favorite piece!

We love the cedar chest that was handed down to us from my husband’s grandma, and I also love the arm chairs/ottoman that my grandparents handed down to us…they need some slipcovering, but they are comfortable, well-shaped, and meaningful!
