Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME! I treasure the pieces we have with some personal story — the rocker my mom used to rock me in as a baby that I now use with my own daughter, and a console table handbuilt for us by a good friend’s father. They make me smile whenever I see them.

FURNISH ME! I love my bed. Married for almost twenty years when we finally found the the one that made our hearts sing. That was 14 years ago and I have no desire to change. Think I will keep my husband, too.

I have an antique dresser from my Great Grandmother that was painted dark brown and I stripped it with intentions of white washing it, but when I stripped it the color was beautiful and definately one of a kind. It’s a statement piece!

Our son’s changing table is my favorite piece of furniture in our house. We scored it at a local antique shop a week before he was born. That old (1884!) bath cabinet just happened to be the perfect fit for a baby changing pad.

FURNISH ME!
I’m fond of the 15 dollar bench that fits at the end of our bed PERFECTLY, as well as the 4 dollar typing table, that currently serves as a rolling tool table for my boyfriend, but that I hope to turn into a super DIY project someday.

Our greatest piece is the sectional we searched for for 2 years that finally fits our long narrow living room.

FURNISH ME! I’m getting ready to move to NYC and those would all be great starter pieces. :-)
The greatest piece of furniture I have is a ratty old kitchen table that is slowly dying. My mother bought it when she was my age (27) at a garage sale for $10.00. It saw me through my childhood and was eventually handed down to me when I moved out. I love it and all of its problems because of the memories surrounding it.

My greatest piece of furniture is probably the beautiful sofa we bought from Crate & Barrel, saving over $600 with coupons and wedding gift cards!
Kate C. says

The greatest pieces I own is a pair of vintage glass-front bookcases that I bought for a song at a flea market. Not only are they beautiful, but they anchored our living room and gave me a jumping off point for furnishing the rest of the room. Every time I walk through the room, I smile at the memory of such a fantastic find… needless to say, they have great bones and are good pieces! :)

My hubby and I have a ‘built-in’ desk from pottery barn: the two corner desks and a few cabinets in the middle fit perfectly in our office. We both love the space to spread out and not let our office work take over the rest of the house.

Hmmm…I don’t know if I have a favorite, but my husband and I just got done making wooden stump end tables for our bedroom. Next we are going to restore a mid-century modern dresser :) I LOVE scoring a nice piece of furniture that just needs a little TLC.

The sad truth is that most of my stuff is hand-me-downs and none of it is amazing.
I think the piece I like the most is my kitchen table, which we stripped from a dark shade of stain and sealed once we reached the natural wood shade. Then we repainted the legs from a horrifying forest green to a milk-chocolately brown.
Karen says
“FURNISH ME!” I have an old Duncan Fyphe table that my mom bought when I was 11 or 12. It isn’t the prettiest, but it can fit 4 leaves for family and friend gatherings.
Kathryn V. says
FURNISH ME!
My fella and I love the hand me down dresser that my great-grandfather made with his own two hands. It is ornately carved on the top drawer with a floral motif. A farmer and a poet, apparently! We have plans to stain it a deep mocha color in the near future to match the rest of our furniture, but it is an heirloom piece for sure :)
Sarah S. says
FURNISH ME! My fiance and I got a bright red chair, thinking it would be a great pop of color for our living room. Unfortunately, the cats took it over, so now it has to be covered with a sheet to keep the cat hair under control!

FURNISH ME!!
My husband and I have (and always will) adore our daughter’s crib. My husband made it himself before she was born! She just outgrew her crib and upgraded to a big girl bed this weekend. *Tears* Guess that means we should start working on Baby #2! ;)
Emily says
Furnish me. My favorite piece of furniture is our bookcases. Though I love them because of what they hold, not for how they look.
Elizabeth Long says
FURNISH ME!! My favorite thing is my IKEA sectional. The kids love bouncing and running all over it and then I can just strip the slip covers off and clean them!

Best piece so far are two campaign style armoires I scored last summer. They are my entertainment center and although I’ve painted them black, I’m thinking they may need a makeover with a pop of color.

FURNISH ME!
I moved into my own apartment last summer. Being on a budget, I didn’t splurge on expensive pieces of furniture but I do love my sectional. I get so many compliments and several friends who always fall asleep on it. I dressed it up with a few inexpensive pillows. Definitely a piece I will be holding onto until it absolutely can’t hold up any longer!
Leah says
What a killer giveaway! FURNISH ME! I feel like I have ZERO great furniture. Most of it is ikea or craigslist or pressboard junk from college or hand-me-downs of no value.
