***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

um, WOW! awesome giveaway, and the book sounds like an interesting read too. i think my current ‘greatest piece’ is a tie between a large (6-7 feet tall?) ikea mirror that is a little generic but awesome, and two elementary school desks that i found for free on the side of the road a few years ago and painted to use as end tables (after spotting the desks while out for a run and roping my roommate into helping me retrieve them in the POURING rain!).

I have a great trophy case that my grandfather built by hand for me when I was a kid. It’s used more as a storage case now, but it’s gorgeous and I love it to pieces.

I came across this great, mint condition, mid century modern credenza at a local antique mall for $120 and couldn’t wait to take it home! It was such a steal and is by far my favortie piece of furniture… the only problem was finding a way to get it home becuase my little Malibu defintely wasn’t going to cut it… :)

Hmmm…it would be a hard choice between the furniture my grandpa made for me or the mint condition 30’s era table, hutch and buffet that I scored at an antique store years ago. Love all of them for different reasons!
Lauren says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is an old but immaculately made dresser that I’ve updated with drawer pulls from anthropologie. I love it!

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is a student’s desk that my mother used throughout her childhood, her older siblings used it before her, and yet amazingly survived many an awful paint job. My dad stripped it down to the original wood without taking away a bit of the history and character. I love it!
Kristi Lynn says
FURNISH ME! I have a chair that lived in my parent’s neighbor’s mom’s basement in the 70’s and was rarely used. It has great lines and great structure. It lived in my two apartments in college, my first apartment in Chicago and now lives in my current apartment. It’s the piece of furniture I’ve had the longest and I love it! The only problem? The fabric is HIDEOUS! It’s that 70’s orangey-yellow. Now that I actually have the funds to get it reupholstered, I just have to make a fabric choice!

I am proud of my bedroom furniture. It was my grandparents’ waterfall furniture from the 1930s and was abandoned in my parents’ basement before I refinished it.

I just started getting into furniture so I don’t know if I have any “great pieces” yet. Although my dad found this gorgeous vintage console table that I currently under-use for my frog’s tank (he’s living in style)
I would also like to say I desperately hope I win as I’m currently furnishing my living room and everything would go gorgeously in there!! Crossing my fingers!!

I’m sooo severely lacking in any great pieces of furniture (don’t even have a headboard for my bed!). But I have a wood chest that was my grandparents’ that I keep at the foot of my bed, and a weirdly awesome corner chair that was also my grandparents’. It needs a slipcover, but it’s a fixture in our living room.
Ryan says
Furnish me!!! Most proud of a cool bench for my entryway I scored off craigslist…still deciding on a finish to complete my love for it! Thinking of ombre!!
Kelli says

The greatest piece I currently own is what I affectionately refer to as my “peter pan dresser.” It’s a small, antique, refurbished, dovetail dresser complete with goregous little legs. AND… it was $30 at a yardsale. It has a special place in my heart.

Our greatest piece of furniture is a solid pine dresser that we bought and stained ourselves. I know it isn’t much, but given that my husband and I are poor graduate students this is 100% our nicest piece of furniture to date. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s exactly to our taste since we got to pick everything out!

My oldest son’s full bellini bed, our first (only?) furniture splurge. Unfortunately, we are moving into a smaller space and I think we’re going to have to get rid of it and get twin bunk beds for the boys. :(

“FURNISH ME!” I haven’t splurged on anything, but I have inherited several beautiful pieces.

Honestly, we don’t own any great non-big-box-store pieces yet (although, they’re still pretty nice). I think my favorite furnishing is the bed my fiancé and I upholstered ourselves. It’s stunning and looks like we paid good money for it. Plus, knowing he put in so much work to make me happy makes it all the more special.

The greatest piece I own right now is my mid-century credenza. It’s super cute! It’s a solid walnut credenza with brass accents, and those amazing tapered legs. I got it for a steal on Craigslist.
