Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…

The only piece of furniture I’ve ever splurged on is a beautiful dark wood dresser with cedar drawers. Everything else in my home is from the thrift store or Ikea.

My favorite piece of furniture and one that I will never get rid of is a dresser I bought from an estate sale of the aunt of one of my parents friends. It has the perfect patina and shows wear around the draw pulls. It has a story and is good storage in my family room.

90 percent of the furniture in my house is inherited or recycled, and each piece is a treasure (to me). If I had to pick one piece it would be the maple secretary my parents bought for their first house.
Liz S. says
FURNISH ME!!! My greatest piece is probably an armchair. My husband and I bought it when we were engaged, so it was our first real piece of furniture. It’s also quality-built, which doesn’t categorize most of our other pieces! ;)

Mine is a antique clawfoot buffet I found for a steal on Craigslist a few years back. It is huge, heavy, and a bear to move, but gorgeous and I adore it.

Though ugly as all get out, I really love my dad’s old La-z-boy recliner from the mid 1970s. In true 70s fashion it’s gold with rust colored flecks, but it’s comfortable, and it reminds me of my dad.
Rosie says
FURNISH ME! We have a great antique oak column desk that belonged to my so’s grandfather – it definitly makes our apartment seem more grownup!
Mandy says
FURNISH ME: It’s not the greatest piece, but for sentimental value, I have my grandmother’s china cabinet, which holds my Great Grandmother’s China. It’s a nice reminder of them each time I have dinner.

FURNISH ME!! One of my favorite pieces is a gorgeous Acacia wood media stand that we scored from the Dump, not like garbage dump, the The Dump The Dump The Dump Dump Dump…you know :) for about 75% off. Every inch is hard wood and super heavy! It was a bit of a headache to transport but well worth it!

I actually don’t have anything I’m proud of. Everything is basically from Walmart or Ikea. Wow, that’s pretty sad. I NEED THIS!

FURNISH ME…. The greatest piece I ever bought was my first grown-up dresser. Way back in 2004, Eddie Bauer had a furniture store and it was going out of business (at least, the one on Michigan Ave in Chicago was). I stalked this gorgeous black dresser for days, weeks, even. No one was buying it. It was originally $2000.
One day on my lunch break I went into the store it was gone and I was really upset and fretting all over the store and a salesperson asked me what was wrong. I told her that “my dresser” was gone. She replied that it had been sent to their suburban location because that store had more floor space. I ran back to work and called the suburban store, where it was now $499 and the tax was 2% less as well. Woo-hoo. I bought it over the phone and politely ordered my boyfriend to go and pick it up with his truck after work. (he had been telling me to, just buy it, for weeks I still have it and love it. It has survived a puppy gnawing on the lower knobs and it may get a makeover soon, but it is still going strong.
Sometimes, it pays to wait, literally.

My husband and I were looking for an Eames lounge chair and ottoman — and one lucky Saturday morning, happened upon a late 60s imitation outside of one of our favorite mid-century shops in Atlanta. It was a bit worn, but applied Restore-A-Finish to the back, gave it a good vacuuming, and wiped down the chrome with steel wool. It’s perfect. It makes the room. Basically, it has good bones. :)

which store? I live in Atlanta and would love to keep my eye out for it

We inheirited a bedroom set that has a FANTASTIC dresser. I always love the look of refinished dressers painted a poppy color, but I can’t bring myself to risk toying with the gorgeous color of this solid wood dresser. Maybe someday…
