Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Our huge dining room table used to be in the kitchen at my parent’s house. If you look at the wood, you can see my siblings names, math problems, etc. because we used to do our homework on it as well. I love it!

Furnish me!!! We just purchased a new couch from Macy’s after a YEAR of using fold out chairs from Target (think college dorm). The sectional is so much more comfortable!

FURNISH ME!
My husband and I love the dual leather recliner sofa we purchased off of Craigslist (for a steal!) for our downstairs “theater room”. It’s amazingly comfortable, and we prefer watching movies at home rather than paying for an uncomfortable, overpriced seat at the movie theater, so we’ve also saved a lot of money that way!

FURNISH ME!
I was quite happy with this coffee table I had back in college. It was sturdy enough to hold 5 people dancing on top and had a nice distressed look about it. Should have never left it behind with all that broke Ikea junk. *sigh*

FURNISH ME! I bought a Mission style coffee table at a garage sale for $20, It is signed and dated and big and I love it!
Norma says
FURNISH ME!!!!!! My prize piece is a old wash stand that was in a big ranch house my parents moved into in the late 1040’s. I have had it for around 40 years and it has been painted many times. It now has a red, distressed paint job and I have it in my kitchen a I love it.

FURNISH ME! The best ‘pieces’ I own are some craigslist-scored armoires currently in my son’s nursery. They were originally just plain finished oak, trimmed with beadboard. Got them for $400. Found the original price online ($1200!). They have corkboard and chalkboards on the inside of the doors. To fit within the nursery decor, we painted the outside(s) white and distressed them and the insides a seaglass green. Found cool vintage-style knobs from Hobby Lobby. Just so proud of those pieces!

FURNISH ME! My favorite is the big, comfy sectional my husband and I just bought for our new house.:)

The first piece of furniture I refinished years ago is a drop-leaf coffee table, which we still use. It’s not the most pricy piece we have, but it’s the most valuable.

FURNISH ME! I think the best piece we own is a bright red rocking chair that my husband refinished for our daughter’s room. It was old and just needed a lot of work. He sanded it down and painted it the gorgeous gloss red. We get more compliments on that than anything else.

My absolute favorite piece is a standing mirror known only as the “hall mirror” in my family – I took it from my parents who bought it when they first got married. It’s been in the entry of every place I’ve ever lived! It’s got an attached tray for keys and mail – indispensible!

My favorite piece of furniture in our home is my great grandparent’s beautiful teak dining table. It is small compared to today’s standards, but it seats 6 regularly and two wings slide out from underneath to double its size for up to 10 seats! truly amazing!

FURNISH ME!
A few years ago right out of college, I lived in a tiny bedroom (that I suspect was originally a small office) with only enough room for my full-sized bed and ONE piece of furniture. Since I had no closet (I kept a lot of my clothes hanging in a hallway coat closet), I had to find the perfect chest of drawers that would fit between the walls, an oddly-placed radiator, and my bed. I spent weeks snooping around second-hand shops and living out of a suitcase before finding my lovely teak Danish modern chest of drawers. Needless to say, it was worth the search, and I am never getting rid of it! I am also out of that apartment and could use more furniture (the irony!) to fill up my new place.

I’m partial to several pieces I rescued from my grandmother’s house. One I painted, one I stripped & refinished and another I just used rejuvenating oil on. I love giving old things a new life :)

I actually have two! One is an antique white dresser (that has amazing curves!) that I successfully haggled down to $20 at a thrift store. The other is an entertainment center that I built for my husband for his DVD collection (he has hundreds!) for Christmas a couple years ago.
Leigh Anne says
FURNISH ME!
This is a doozy of a giveaway! I’d say our entertainment center is the one that we get the most compliments on. It’s a focal point of the room and a piece of art in it’s own right.
