***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece is an antique armoire that was my great grandmothers that I am in the process of refinishing into a bar cabinet. I’m trying to stay close to its original bones because I fantasize about it being in my future (not yet conceived) daughter’s bedroom.
Meg says
um…er…NOT as a bar cabinet at that point.

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture right now is an antique chest of drawers I found on craigslist for $30. I repainted it a blue gray and polished the handles and key holes and I love it! However, I am on the hunt for a danish dresser like Clara’s to give a new home for my coming third child.

My fave piece is the table and umbrella we got for our deck. It’s given us the use of a space we never spent time in before then. I love it!

We have an upholstered bed from World Market that I am absolutely in love with. It’s timeless and could work with a million design styles, so it can grow and adapt with us, but looks finished and clean. It took some work to get my husband to invest in it, but we had been sleeping on a mattress/box springs on the floor prior to this purchase, so it wasn’t THAT hard of a sell :)

Furnish Me! All of my favorite pieces have been passed down from my Mom and my mother-in-law. :)

FURNISH ME!!My favorite pieces are a Duncan Phyfe dining table and matching hutch. They were my grandmothers. When I open the hutch, the smells remind me of growing up and eating Thanksgiving dinners around that table. I can still see all her dishes and glassware. Loads of memories!!

Right now I’m loving my first piece of “garbage” furniture. I picked up a low accent table from the end of a neighbor’s driveway a couple of weeks ago, spray painted it white, and sat it in our guest room. It’s perfect for a lamp and a few frames.
Kate Ediger says
FURNISH ME! My favorite right now are my new bar stools. They actually met my requirements and my husbands! It took quite a lot of looking to find them!

My two favorite pieces come from my Grandma’s house… We had to move her into a nursing home last summer and I was lucky enough to snatch up a dresser and a chest…both very old and full of character… Love them!!!
Angela says
Furnish me! Sadly, I have no furniture pieces I’m proud of…my house is still in a very hand-me-down state.

FURNISH ME! Before we married, my hubby bought a beautiful tv cabinet that I absolutely adored. We recently had to put it in storage when the tv died (won’t hold a flatscreen) but I’m anxious to re-use it whenever we up-size into a new home someday!

I am in love with the antique dining table my grandma gave me. It’s not huge but works for just my husband and I – the original end leaves still slide out and work perfectly. The finish is beautiful – will definitely be retaining it to pass on to my grandchildren.

My favorite item in my home is a small marble top apothecary table that sat in my great grandma’s house as a telephone stand growing up. It now holds all my favorite jewelry and makeup!
This is a great prize, I think I’ll buy the book regardless of if I win!

I recently purchased a vintage dove-tailed dresser for my daughters nursery off of craigslist for $30. We originally wanted to paint it white to match the rest of her furniture but left it in its original state because it is so beautiful! We love it! & the price tag!
heather buescher says
Furnish Me! My favorite piece by far is an armoire that I got from a steal from Storehouse 8 years ago, before they went belly-up. It holds our TV and everything else, fits the room perfectly and makes sure the TV is only seen when it is in use.
Carrie says
FURNISH ME! I think it would be a tie between the awesome vintage midcentury modern sideboard I am re-finishing or the old mahogany dresser I inherited from my grandmother.

Furnish me…my favorite thing right now is our furniture in our guest room. It was my mom’s when she was a teenager, and she gave it to us. It’s got a pretty, curvy, antique-ish shape to it, but it was made of the dark brown seventies wood veneer. I painted it all off white and now it looks much better and more timeless! Love it!

Most of our furniture is second-hand from parents or other relatives. We’re buying our first house soon (closing at the end of the month!!!!!) and we’re excited to hit up some local thrift stores for dressers and other odds & ends. I’m hoping we find some great treasures!

Hmm, I am not really sure about the best piece in my house?? Maybe sold old shadow boxes that I use to display the magnets we buy from each vacation. I took sheet metal and cut it to fit inside the box, used liquid nails to stick the metal to the fabric, and then put on all of the magnets.
jenn says
FURNISH ME! We actually mostly have cheap furniture, and some handmedowns that weren’t great to begin with, but I love my daughter’s dresser. It is on the edge of not being practical anymore, but I’ll save it. It was my mom’s, then mine, now hers.
tashia says
FURNISH ME!!! I consider my greatest piece to be an armoire that my grandfather built for me. Love it!
Jen says
FURNISH ME! My sofa was my first “big girl” furniture purchase, so I’d have to choose that. But my hope is to start finding some unique, old furniture that I can restore once I move to a place with a garage or basement where I can work!
