***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Furnish me! We picked up a great 1950s couch from Salvation Army for $75 a few years ago. It’s extra long, which makes it perfect for tall people, like my husband, to nap on.

FURNISH ME! My best peice is a 50’s mid century modern console table in my entryway.I’m about to paint it grey and add some updated hardware. I’m thinking I may paint the interior apple green, just for fun.

I’m pretty proud of a table that I picked up at the thrift store and refinished… it’s solid white oak, mission style, with a butterfly leaf, that makes it square when fully opened. It seats 12 at a pinch and I love it. Love it.

I have a few hand me downs that my mother refinished in the 70s. They are both beautiful and sentimental. The best combo!

FURNISH ME! I gotta give love to our giant couch. It’s probably too big for our little apartment, but it’s so comfy and it’s a nice neutral tone – so hopefully it will adorn our living space for years to come!

FURNISH ME! I adore this simple desk that my aunt gave away for free when I was in college. I stripped of the veneer and gave it a make over!

Not a furniture item, but my living room curtains are my favorite item in my house right now. I made them out of some West Elm shower curtains and paired them with some West Elm sheers I got on sale years back for $7 a panel. Love them.

FURNISH ME!!! Most of my furniture still hails from Ikea but I have a small cupboard that belonged to my Great Great Aunt. It was on it’s way to the dump when I rescued it- I can’t believe no one else in my family saw it’s potential before me!

My favorite piece of furniture is our marble top buffet. My husband and I are just starting out so we don’t have a lot, but this piece makes any room feel elegant. I inherited it from my childhood bedroom where I used it as a vanity. Now it is a buffet in the dining room. We don’t have a dining set yet, so this piece is showcased for now :)
Elyssa says
FURNISH ME! I have a great mid-century modern chair that I got at a consignment shop for $25. All that I need to do to make it even more perfect is reupholster it!
Barbara says
FURNISH ME!!! I have an antique Hoosier cabinet that took me almost six months to refinish. But now, I love it – and it’s one of four pieces of furniture that made the move to Hawaii and back with us!

My grandfather had an old iron cart from the Pennsylvania Railroad sitting in his barn for many years. My dad cleaned and oiled it, put new rough hewn wood shelves on it, and gave it to us as a housewarming present. It’s our media console and our favorite piece in the house, because it’s the real deal and not a repro, because it’s super sturdy, and because it’s a family “heirloom” of sorts.
Abby Thome says
FURNISH ME!!!!
My fav piece of furniture we own is our “craigslist find” patio set. It is a dusty blue/gray, wide plank wood set. With a great bench. We are smitten by it every time we enjoy eating outside!

The best piece in my house is a mid-century modern Goodwill find. $35 and a can of spray paint later, and my turquoise buffet is the showpiece of my entire house!
Mary Buckelew says
FURNISH ME!
My most favorite piece of furniture is a buffet and hutch made in that Mexican pine, BUT painted white. It is adorable. The hutch has cabinets without glass; I substituted a black fabric with tiny white polka dots… it’s the cutest ever! This piece tickles me every time I look at it. My daughter has already called dibs on when I (ahem) am no longer here!

I’m pretty proud of the media cabinet I refinishd. It started out as the base to a china cabinet. I found it at Goodwill for 20 bucks. Evryone thought I was crazy when I brought it home, but I could see the potential. I took the drawers out, cut out the drawer supports and trim around them…. added a shelf for the electronics… painted it all white and added some great knobs from Hobby Lobby. Now everyone loves it and they can’t believe it started life as an old, beat up brown buffet.
Brooke says
FURNISH ME! I have two small mid-century dressers that we use as nightstands. They need some work still, but I love them!

My favorite would be our awesome (first) antique cabinet that was falling apart from termites but then rescued by a local amish man who does woodworking! :)

FURNISH ME! I have at least one favorite piece in every room, so it’s hard to narrow the selection down. However, the antique washstand in our entryway carries the most memories. It came from my grandparents house. I remember hiding my “treasures” in the cabinet side meant for the pitcher and basin as a little girl.

My husband and I recently splurged on new couches from West Elm. We love them! Would be nice to have these pieces too to spice up our house!
Sarah P. says

My best purchase was a 2 piece set of mid-century modern dressers from craigslist… not quite a steal, but a great deal for 2, and they had the original receipt in a drawer from an old department store downtown in the 60’s! so cool!
mandy says
FURNISH ME! Current furniture could use an update, some are decent, but others need to go!

The greatest pieace I own is probably our dining table. It’s stylish, huge and has stood up to so much abuse.
Casey says
FURNISH ME!!
Nearly every piece of furniture in my apartment was either a hand-me-down, craigslist find, or a thrift store purchase…nothing spectacular, but I’d have to say my great-grandpa’s old dingy blue reading chair is my favorite.
Carole says
Furnish me! I’m a fairly new college graduate so most of my furniture is from Ikea via Craigslist, but I did manage to score a very neat vintage desk from Craigslist. It’s the only thing I’m going to take with me when I move next month. The rest will be resold.

I inherited my husband’s grandmother’s antique blue secretary that I keep in my home office. It’s in perfect condition and I absolutely love it.

I bought an antique couch at Goodwill for $35. It will need reupholstering someday, but I love its curvaceous wooden trim lines and fancy wooden feet. It has lovely bones, and the original upholstery is neither obnoxious or torn up, so we’re going to enjoy it as-is as long as possible before redoing it!
Kelly says
FURNISH ME! My greatest piece of furniture is a solid wood dresser made in denmark that i inherited from my great aunt.
