Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece I currently own is probably my desk. It’s a very basic school desk with a little cubby and little wood piece that pulls out for extra writing space. It even has a little desk number tile still attached and some initials scratched into the wood. I love it.
Christine says
Furnish Me!!! We have a great dining room set, its look is very classic but its basic enough that it goes with many different things!
leah says
Furnish ME! No really, I mean it. Furnish me! I love my barnwood desk that I refinished and I love my grandmothers armchair that I inhereted. The rest of my furniture does its job, but is not anything I am in LOVE with. I loooooove all of those pieces above. Please please let it be me!

I have an old chest that I found at a yard sale when I was 12 years old. With a little paint and some hard work, it still serves it’s purpose after all of these years.

I was given a rocking chair that has wood on the ends of the arms and wooden rockers – the rest is covered with a striped fabric. I love it because it’s wide and comfy and can be re-upholstered in any kind of fabric.

We purchased a 3 piece entertainment/bookcase set on Craigslist about 5 years ago. It has moved with us many times and worked well in just about any floor plan we were currently living in. We ditched the piece that was meant to hide our TV when we recetly upgraded to a flat screen but the couple who bought it were going to repurpose it into a sewing/crafting armoire. The 2 bookcases are going strong. They have been pine, and then we painted them a dark brown and I’ve been contemplating painting them white recently. They’re wonderful for children because they’re ultra sturdy (no tipping those things). The lower half is closed cabinetry so small children can’t unearth the contents inside when secured with a childproof lock :) I’m sure we’ll have them for at least a few more years :)

I just got my new custom rocker for our new baby on the way and I just love it~ it’s fully upholstered and you can’t even tell it’s a rocker! Gorgeous chartreuse moroccan fabric…I can’t wait to spend many an hour in it with my little lady.

Furnish me!!! Pretty pretty please!
I am actually in love with the changing table my husband made for our daughter’s room. He made a potting bench style piece that I painted to go in her garden themed nursery. It’s a super cute and sentimental piece!

Furnish me! The best thing we have in our house is a handmade oriental rug from Saudi Arabia…althought I am not sure it is called oriental if it is from the middle east. My dad gave a friend of his a signed glossy of himself when he was in the USAF Thunderbirds (worth the price of photo paper) and he received in return this rug that is worth thousand of dollars. And now it resides in our house because my parents didn’t have a place for it. Their loss is my gain!

When we got married (almost five years ago!), we used some wedding money for a very affordable leather couch. It was a sound investment, because two kids and (almost) five years later, it’s still in great shape!
Anna says

My favorite piece was accidental. We bought a dining set for $80 on Craigslist(yes, $80) on the condition that we take a buffet as well. It really needs refinishing but in the meantime we painted it metallic gold and are smitten with it’s old lines, new color and functionality.
Brianna says

My favorite piece I own is my new crate and barrel lounge sectional I just ordered. Hasn’t been delivered yet, but it’s already my favorite.
Adrienne says
Furnish Me! WOW what an amazing giveaway! My current prized piece of furniture is a purple velvet wing chair that was a hand me down from my mom. I actually took a picture of it when I was moving out of an apartment once (it looked sad and lonely against a yellow wall) and now the photo is hanging up in my current appartment right across the room from the chair itself.
Sarah B. says

My favorite piece is a french country style chair that I pulled out of the dumpster outside a nearby apartment complex. I fixed up the hot mess (paint job + new cushions + custom throw/accent pillow) and now it is a b-e-a-utiful masterpiece that reigns supreme in my living room.
