Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece I own is a mid century modern buffet that was my grandmothers. It’s chic today, and has great childhood memories too!

I’m a little jealous of my little girl’s room in general, but especially a wrought iron bed I found on Craigslist in an antique green finish that is like new.

FURNISH ME!! What a great prize! My best find so far was a chair i fell in love with one day at a local antique shop. Not only was it a beautiful French chair, with upholstery in great shape, and beautiful dark wood accents, but the upholstery is this lovely, soft velvet in my favorite shade of bright, springy green. For $175 I couldn’t let it go! It took a few months to finally make it home (thanks to losing my job a few days later) but the shop was great and held onto my deposit on it and I finally brought it home for my birthday in April :) It looks a little out of place though with only an old futon and an ancient TV to keep it company!
Kelsy says
FURNISH ME! I am quite attached to a beautiful piece of artwork that my photography professor made. I have it framed in our bedroom. (As far as furniture goes, there is nothing I would cry over if it went missing).

My favorite piece of furniture is the greena and blue floral chair I got for my living room last summer!

My greatest piece is a sofa table my husband made me for Christmas. The best part is the top is made from an old mantle from a fireplace we had to demo. Perfect, huh?? :)

My Mom recently gave me a 9 drawer bedroom dresser. It was mine when I was a kid and is still completely usable (and acceptable to use) at 29!

My choice would have to be our dining room table. It’s a solid farmhouse-style table that my husband and I fell in love with after we bought our house. It was built in North Carolina on special order, and my grandfather bought it for us just before he passed away. We had it for over 18 months before we could find chairs we liked to go with it, and I didn’t care, because I knew I had the perfect table and the chairs would come later.

My most treasured piece of furniture – though more of an accent piece than actual furniture – is an antique radio that my grandpa refinished for me. He took the guts out, too, but fitted it with room to put a radio or, in more recent developments, an ipod dock. The remote for the ipod dock even works through the mesh on the front of the radio, so it’s like the radio really works!!

We have several lovely antiques handed down from my Husband’s grandfather’s ranch. They add a sense of history to the room, and will fit in almost any room!
Jess says
FURNISH ME!! My refurbished antique headboard and vanity that I found on the side of the road for $100 near my parent’s house. Really pull a thrown-together-first-apartment-bedroom together!

My greatest furniture piece is my teal colored couch. Everyone said to go with beige but thank goodness I didn’t listen. 15 years later and it is still in style and looks great!
Rachel says
Furnish me! I have an antique shipping crate I inherited- I use it to store extra blankets, etc in the living room. I like imagining what all it might have been used for in the past!

My favorite piece is my craiglisted hutch. It could use some love with some new stain or paint, but my wine glasses look pretty in it as-is too!

My best furniture pieces are from my great-grandfather. He was a furniture builder (he even built our summer cottage) and I’m lucky to have a carved mirror and a hanging 2 shelf wall system he made out of some beautiful wood.

My husband and I each bought dressers from rummage sales from the 1940s. We stained them to match and they are our most treasured pieces!

My favorite piece was an ugly dresser we found at a yardsale for $20 bucks (the stain was ugly, not the dresser). we took it home and sanded off most of the stain, but left just enough so that it would look weathered. 6 years later it’s still our favorite piece of furniture.

The greatest piece of furniture I own has to be an old dresser that belonged to my boyfriend’s dad as a kid, then survived a fire in my boyfriend’s apartment, then my dad and I fixed it up and refinished it! It was a labor of love, but so worth it :)
Josha says
FURNISH ME! My husband and I were given a vintage danish modern dining room set featuring a table and six chairs. Not only does it have great lines but it was free! I absolutely love it.

I had been coveting this long, wooden farm table that I had seen. So, my sweet dad/woodworker ninja took on the task of making a look alike for me. Truth be told, my dad’s version is even better than the original one I was lusting after. (Though, he did mention that I wasn’t allowed to dance on it, when he gave it to me. I can handle that, I guess.) : )

Furnish me! My fave piece has to be one I got off of Craigslist–an old buffet that is currently being converted into a bathroom vanity. Love it!

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece that we have right now is actually a totally free (to us) giant arm chair that my sister was willing to part with so that she didn’t have to move it. I am in love with it right now because it is soooo comfortable and is screaming to be reupholstered in some FABULOUS print. I love the possibilities that it has in store for us…and the fact that we would NEVER have been able to afford it without her generosity :)

I don’t have many special pieces in my home, but I’m pretty proud of the bunkbeds that I built for my daughters with MY OWN TWO HANDS!!!
Callie says
Furnish me!! This spring I re-did the all-wood vanity in our bathroom, and its rich mocha tones are still my favourite in our house :)
Fran says
FURNISH ME! I found a great drop leaf table for the dining room for $25!!!! – store thought it was broke, but turned out to “operator error” :)
Paige says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is an antique mahogany shelf we picked up at a yard sale for $3! It looks like it used to sit on top of a buffet or something. It’s the only piece of furniture in our potty/shower room (connected to our master bath) and it gives the whole room that vintage/eclectic vibe.

The solid wood buffet in our dining nook – our one and only furniture splurge (so far :))…definitely a timeless ‘forever’ piece.
Penni McNamara says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece I own is a black bookcase with glass doors from Crate Barrel. It’s the most expensive thing in my house (not why I love it) it just truly makes me happy every time I walk by. It’s like we are old friends :)

My favorite piece I own is a 10 foot tall bookcase I inherited from my parents. I love it!
Amanda says
Furnish Me! I am most proud of our coffee table. I found it on the side of the road for the trash and the glass top was broken so we made a new one and after a nice coat of paint it changed the feel of our living room.

I don’t have any piece of furniture that I just love — isn’t that sad? I do adore the little French bench I got at Target last year – not very original though!

“FURNISH ME!”
Rachel says
FURNISH ME!! The best little piece of furniture I scored was a coffee table I found on Craiglist. Now, don’t be fooled by thinking just a rectangle-shaped coffee table, I’m talking like an solid wood english country- carved table legs in an off white, with a maple top, a middle drawer with 6 small (decorative knobs) and two “secret” hatches on either side of the top of the table so you can stash board games or books inside the table for a WOPPING $25 dollars!! Such a steal, its my pride and joy :)
Mindi says
FURNISH ME! I love my daughter’s dresser that we scoured months and months for when I was pregnant. Finally found the perfect one with just the right “bones.” Painted it and found lovely knobs and it is an original in her room. I love it.
