***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

We recently inherited an old wood dining table with 6 chairs from the “Tacoma Chair Co” which can go from (literally) 2.5 feet long to 9 feet long. It is amazing!

FURNISH ME! My husband and I are just starting out, so we don’t have a lot of great pieces, and I refuse to waste money on cheap furniture that will eventually need to be upgraded. One of my prized possessions is a little round table from my grandmother that needs refinishing, but it’s a classic and very well-built.

The most special piece of furniture we have is a rocking chair that was built by one of my ancestors and I am now rocking the 7th generation in it. Sometimes I just sit and wonder what the world was like for the first mother that used it!

My favorite piece of furniture is outside – our fire pit! We have 4 big comfy chairs to sit around and enjoy the fresh air with great company! Nothing beats a bottle of wine, friends (or family), and a fire on a cool evening.
Susan says
FURNISH ME!! I have an old curved slingback chair that is an 70’s orange velour which was inheritated from my great grandmother! It is just devine the way it snugs you in – the perfect reading, relaxing, feeding the babygirl chair which has followed me since college. It is in need of a reupholster yet I can’t bring myself to do it, feeling it will wash a bit of nostalgia away with it…

My favorite piece is my dresser I bought at a yard sale. It is a beautiful solid wood dresser with a gorgeous inlay from Italy. The original owners told me they paid nearly $5000 for it and had it shipped from their honeymoon. (I paid $80)

FURNISH ME!! My (current) favorite piece is a huge antique buffet. It’s from the 1920’s and embodies all the fabulouness (yes, that is a word!) of the time period.

Furnish me!!! I love my dining room hutch that we were lucky enough to have been passed down from my husband’s great grandmother.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece in my house is an antique dresser (complete with wire netting underneath) that I found at a thrift store for $30. It is this amazing dark walnut color, with all the dings and scratches of age. It goes perfectly in my living room to house our games, etc and is topped with modern accessories to give it a little mix.

Furnish me! I just love our new wrap around sectional! Finally our whole family can kick back and watch a movie all at once.

Furnish me! We have bought 3 pieces of furniture (couch, chair, and bookcase/bar) together since being married and they’re all my favorite of that we own … Probably because they’re not hand me downs :)
Maggie Rose says
FURNISH ME! We don’t have a ton of “forever pieces” right now, but I do LOVE our jute rug and try to take good care of it. We’ve also had our glass and chrome coffee table for about four years and no plans to replace it! It goes with everything.

I would probably have to say the piano that my parents gave to me when I bought my place. It was the one they bought when I was little that I learned and practiced on for years.

My favorite pieces are my dining room set- although they were new, we got them at a really cool store that sells very eclectic vintage and new items. I love them (although they’re probably too big for the room)!
Ashleigh says
FURNISH ME! I splurged on an antique painted china cabinet before I married my husband and I love it. Its one of the only pieces of furniture that we have that I actually paid good money for.

FURNISH ME!!
I have a lot of hand me downs/freebies, my favorite is a wingback type chair with wood trim that was rescued from an older man’s house (everything was getting thrown out b/c the older man was moving into a nursing home/assisted living – I don’t think the family had the patience to sell everything on craiglist). It has great curves and is super comfortable for sitting in and the fabric is a beautiful green pattern. Someday, I’ll reupholster it… I was quoted upwards of $600 to have it professionally done. I’m not there yet and I keep thinking I’ll reupholster it myself!

You are such a wealth of inspiration, information & always so generous sharing inspiring ideas from so many places. The only problem is there are not enough hours in the day to read and do accordingly. I am thinking there are two Sherry’s and two John’s at your house.:) Love Clara & Burger & their take as well. Thank you! Thank you! Continue to soar!

FURNISH ME!!
My husband and I absolutely fell in love-at-first-sight with our console table. Initially it felt like such an adult piece of furniture so when we first moved in we couldn’t really envision being the type of people (or mature enough!) for that type of furntiture. SO… we saved our pennies and watched for the furniture company to have a sale and YAY! finally (many months later) got it delivered this mother’s day. Happy Mother’s Day to me! And it’s beyond perfect in the space!

the this end up couch and chairs purchases 23 years ago would be my best investment pieces! aside from getting new foam cushions and covers occasionally these pieces have stood the test of time.
Marika says
Furnish me! Wow – I am already mentally rearranging my house with these items. One of my most loved items is a craigslist mirror (that involved going into a sketchy trailor to get – perhaps not the best decision though it worked out) and then my first spray painting project and my first sandpaper distressing. I love it. Even though I have now learned how I could have bettered the process. But I love its (and my) imperfections.

My couch is my favorite piece of furniture. It was my first big purchase and I stressed that I was spending too much, but I love it! I am thankful I decided to buy it!
Sarah says
Furnish me! 90% of our furniture is hand-me-down from my parents, in-laws, friends, and garage sales. We did buy a bedroom set after we got married, and hope to have it forever.
Nicole says
Furnish Me…..years ago, my mother inherited numerous vintage items from my grandparent’s house after their passing, although she never really found the right spot for showing them off. Recently, I asked if I could have the gold vintage convex wall mirror. I couldn’t be more in love with the placement of this mirror on my bedroom wall.

Currently my best piece of furniture is an old Montgomery Ward sideboard my husband gave me for my birthday. I had been eyeing it for months, but couldn’t convince myself to spend the money, so it was a huge surprise when he came home with it! It needs a little TLC, but I really love it.

My husband and I used our wedding-gift money to buy a custom table made out of reclaimed wood. We love it’s one-of-a-kind charm and the fact that it keeps our dining area a little less formal!
