Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

FURNISH ME!! I can honestly say that I don’t really have any pieces of great furniture at all! We’re just starting out, so it’s mismatched hand-me-downs for us :(
Alicia says
FurNiSH Me PLEASE!!! I have no great pieces of furniture. Hubby’s still in grad school so that means my clothes are still in plastic bin drawers and we have a mattress in our living room because we can’t afford a second couch. Please don’t get me started on the gold and glass monstrosity that our tv sits on. Oh how I long for real furniture… Please bless I win. :)

Furnish me! The piece of furniture I love the most is a cherry vanity and bench that first belonged to my great, great aunt. My daughters and I use it nearly every day.

FURNISH ME!! My fave piece we have currently is an ottoman in our son’s nursery. I picked up 2 by someone’s trash in our neighborhood ond day and made a slipcover to match his nursery. It is so relaxing to prop my feet up when rocking him or feeding him a 4AM bottle and can barely stay conscious myself!
We have been searching for an antique dresser/sideboard with a curved front and some drawer storage for a few months for our entry, and I bet it will become my new fave when we find “The One.”

The greatest piece of furniture we currently own is a blue upholstered rocking chair and ottoman. It was our first purchase for our baby’s nursery. We found it second-hand and immediately fell in love with it! Our due date is Wednesday (July 18th) and we can’t wait to spend many nights cozying up in it with the little guy!
Kallie Brelsford says
Furnish me baby! My favorite piece of furniture is our kitchen table. It was the first piece of furniture that we bought as a married couple and to add the awesomeness, it was exactly what we were looking for and only 30 dollars! We love thrifting!

We have a lovely antique sideboard that was handed down to us from my husband’s grandparents. It is in need of a little bit of TLC and on my project list, but it is so gorgeous even in it’s current well-loved form.

I inherited a gorgeous “French Provincial” 1930s bedroom set from my grandmother. It is so fabulous and there are so many pieces, We’ve mixed it into different rooms with our more contemporary furniture: We have a couple of dressers in our bedroom, a chair and vanity I threw in our guestroom, we hope to find a use someday for the full sized bed which is currently in storage in our attic. It’s just some really special pieces.

My favorite piece is a huge buffet that our tv sits on. I got it at this place called the Potato Barn, It’s a dusty dirty dark place, but has great stuff. And when I was cleaning it up, I may or may not have discovered mouse droppings, eeewww! (side note, the Potato Barn moved to a new location, I kinda miss the ol’ barn, mouse dropping and all)
Rachael says
Furnish me! I think our best pieces are the huge sleigh bed and nightstands we bought from friends and refinished in a nontraditional color to match our style.

I love my nightstands that I found for only $15 for the set at a rummage sale a few years ago. The finish on them was starting to wear off so I just spray painted them a crisp white, added some lace detailing on top, and splurged on a couple new drawer knobs from Anthro. They turned out better than I ever could have imagined.

FURNISH ME!
My most sentimental piece is clearly the rocking chair that my mom got when she was pregnant with my older sister. My mother-in-law recovered the cushions (with my mom’s blessing) to make it more our taste and I look forward to rocking my own little ones in it some day.

My single favorite piece of furniture is the tv console table we splurged on 2 years ago. It’s perfect for the living room, although we had to take the doors off with a toddler around (he tried to break them!). It’s a perfect place for a few photo frames, candles, holiday decor, etc.
