Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I came across an amazing Craigslist find a few months ago. It’s a midcentury modern long dresser that has incredibly unique carvings. By far my favorite piece in the house! Best of all? $30!!!

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is an iron and wood kitchen island my boyfriend actually made me for Valentine’s Day this year. He did all the woodworking and welding himself and it looks exactly like one we saw at World Market but I love it so much more since it was made just for me!

Furnish Me! My favorite piece is my husbands great grandmother’s hall tree/bench. The vintage piece goes well with our modern decor. My other favorite piece is my sons crib. I spent so much time searching for the PERFECT crib and I love it.

Furnish me! Wow, what an amazing giveaway. My favorite piece is a Rajasthani “antique” painted cabinet what we got while we were living in India. I’m not sure it’s more than a few years old but the colors and paintings on it are amazing!

I have a dresser that was one of those “back of the store, corner scratched, clearance, all sales final” that is perfect in our bedroom! That corner scratch? The company threw in a brown marker that covered it up!

My favorite piece is what we use as a very large coffee table. We got it at a junk store and they had said it was an egg incubator. It’s as long as the couch and about 4′ wide, has two doors with windows on one side that fold down. It’s such a large piece it takes a large room. Love it.

My favorite piece of furniture that I own is a cheap, handmade old pie safe that I bought for $7 at a yard sale. I painted it white and navy, bought some vintage knobs for it, and filled it with our dvds. I think it’s my favorite because I’ve never seen anyone else use a pie safe in that way. :)

I own two greatest pieces, both from my grandmother who passed away (expectedly) last year. One is the silverware she got on her wedding day, which was her wedding gift to me!
…and the other is a display I made of a love-knot pin of hers that, after she passed, we found among her treasures with a note. The note explained that the pin was a forget-me-not present that her then-boyfriend, my future grandpa, gave her before he shipped out with the Navy during WW2!

I’m loving the 1880 Dutch buffet that I recently picked up from an antique store…I’m still listening to pleadings from family and friends not to paint it–so we’ll see where it ends up!

We have a great big giant old desk that we found at a yard sale for $15. The owner had removed all the finish from the top and got tired of it after that. Made it easy to slap some new stain on the top and call it good. It’s beautiful and full of character.
Nichole says
FURNISH ME! A wood table & white pitcher from my grandmother that used to be at the bottom of the stairs in her house. It always reminds me of her & my grandpa & the house my mother grew up in.

My current favorite has to be our new Rowe sleeper sofa. It is beautiful, and reportedly very comfortable for our guests. I love it because it’s been our one big furniture purchase since getting married, and it helps us encourage friends and family to visit us in DC!

Favorite furniture so far is my kitchen table/chairs. Scored them for $100 on Criagslist – for solid wood, I could justify it – and painted a nice glossy white top on it with cool grey legs. The chairs ended up a BRIGHT, high gloss teal and I was able to convert them to upholstered seats with a crisp white/teal graphic pattern. It’s love.

Furnish me! I have funky old arm chair passed down from my aunt that was originally my grandparents. So comfy!

My favorite piece right now is a dresser-turned-entertainment center in my bedroom. My husband and I searched for the perfect piece — long somewhat tall, chunky with clean lines and lots of storage room, and white. We found nothing in the $300 and under range that we were looking for, until we found one that was perfect in every way except it was a little banged up and it was cherry-stained. It was marked off big time because of the scratches and odd little pockmarks. The regular price was $450, but we got it for $200. We repaired the relatively minor damage and painted it white following the furniture painting instructions here on YHL! It’s the first thing we ever attempted to refinish, and we love it!

FURNISH ME! I was lucky enough to inherit my great grandparents’ dressers, which are beautiful.

I’m still loving the free nightstand that I found on the side of the road. It was an old sewing table discarded when some local college kids moved out. A quick coat of white paint and a few minutes later, it turned into a great nightstand for my loving husband. Free = best thing ever.
Susan says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is a large cabinet/sideboard/credenza that I bought when my friends were furnishing their new winery tasting room. They bought very rustic, handmade pieces on the cheap and I claimed one – I get so many compliments on it! Over the years, I considered painting it but I like it more in all its rustic-ness.

Furnish Me! I inherited my grandmother’s secretary with oodles of little nooks and crannies. I love it’s lines and that it was loved by my granny too.

My favorite piece of furniture is my three quarter Jenny Lind bed that was my 95 year old great aunt’s when she was growing up. It was my childhood bed as well, and my mother recently passed it down to me for my guest room.

FURNISH ME!!! yes, please!!
My favorite piece of furniture I own right now is the bow-front-glass china cabinet I inherited from my grandmother. Always loved the piece in her kitchen and love it in my dining room still! It still contains the same dishes she had in it when I was a little girl! Gotta love that tradition … :)

FURNISH ME!
It is an Ottoman, the furniture not the Empire. It is a gray and green fuzzy paisley fabric with a dark gray X-frame bottom. The green is a bright and happy and matches green in the curtains we bought from IKEA nearly perfectly. My wife picked it out from Home Goods and I liked shortly after I saw it. It makes the couch feel like a recliner without it actually having a recliner. And I have to say, as a guy, a guy needs a recliner. And it doubles as extra seating if we ever have friends over. I love it.

My favorite piece would be my 1970’s that ripped the guts out of and covered in fabric for interior storage. It is such a cool looking piece.
Laure says
Furnish me! I’m a poor grad student, so I live off thrifted and Craigslist finds. Right now I’m particularly happy with my nightstand which I found at the local ReStore. Still need to refinish it, but it definitely has good “bones”!

I think our greatest piece of furniture is the funky sofa we bought for our formal living room. It gets no use but I just adore it!
