Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I found a $10.00 old Victory record consol table at a community yard sale that is the centerpiece in our living room. It is old, well worn, but blends the old and new with its charm and history.

Our bed! It’s the first think we bought when my wife and I moved in together and is special because it’s the first “big” purchase we made together!

My Crate and Barrel couch that I scored brand new for $500 because my brother-in-law works in the furniture business!

Furnish Me! My favorite piece is this lingerie chest I bought from an auction. I was right after high school and it was my first piece of real furniture.

FURNISH ME!
I love our leather couch that we got at the Restoration Hardware outlet. It’s base price was discounted since it was at the outlet, with another 30% off because of a summer sale, and then another final discount because the style had been discontinued/redesigned. It was a score!
Mary Lou says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture right now is a dresser that my parents got from my grandmothers house when they bought their first house.
I’ve had it my entire life and has seen me grow up and go off to college. It’s come with me to my first apartment and then made the trek when I moved away. It made the cut when I moved in with my then boyfriend and now it’s been restored (DIYed painted and refinished the hardware) and is living with my husband and I in our brand new-to-us house. It’s been abused, neglected, loved, and now redone and I absolutely love it!
Carrie says
Furnish Me!! My favorite piece(s) are my crib and changing table. We actually splurged and bought them new and I just love them. Baby four will start using the set soon so it has been worth the investment!!
Stacy says
Furnish me! I scored a curvy couch on Craigslist that is perfect for our family of 5 – reading, snuggling and napping friendly!

FURNISH ME! I found an old RCA radio cabinet on the curb. After a good cleaning I have a beautiful TV stand. My favorite family piece is the Duncan Phyfe dining room set of my grandmothers.

I love desk that my husband and I made!

Furnish me! My current best is a roll top desk my folks bought at Costco when I was a kid. It wasn’t finished so they stained and protected it, and now I want to make it colorful…

I love our couches, we splurged on them about a year after we got married and used up our left-over wedding money. We spent months and months looking for the perfect couches, and we finally found them (and for a great price!). My only regret is that we got them in a boring safe beige. I really wish we went for dark grey now, but I guess I didn’t know that then. Oh well, live and learn! At least it’s a safe color, and not something ridiculous!

One of my favorite pieces would have to be my 8 light crystal empire chandelier i found on craigslist for $20! I get so many compliments and it looks so unique over my my dark farmhouse style table!

My husband recently made a pendant light for our dining room using crystals from our wedding and some super cool industrial like light bulbs – he calls it industrial chic. :-) He wants to make a few tweeks still, but I love it!

FURNISH ME!
Once, I would have said our dining table, which was the first thing we purchased together when we got engaged. Sadly, it has seen better days!
At this moment, I guess that means I love the crib the most, because that is where my darling kiddo is(finally)napping!

FURNISH ME!
I have an heirloom trunk dated back from the 1920s with secret compartments. It travelled across the Atlantic to Ellis Island with my great-grandparents. Been in my family for ages. Can’t wait to hand it down to my kids when their adults!

furnish me!
oh man. this is tough. probably my favorite piece of furniture is the vietnam era military trunk i found at goodwill 15 years ago (back when i was young, and had questionable taste). the previous owners painted red and turquoise over the black, but the intervening years saw most of that paint worn off. so it’s a perfectly black, red, and turquoise trunk with so much character. it needs more simple pieces paired with it, so i have to use it carefully.
Anne says
FURNISH ME! My husband and I are actually getting rid of most of our sub-par furniture in preparation for a move next week. We’re inheriting his grandparents’ dining table, though, which we’re very excited about! It’s been around forever and is in great shape.
AMI V says
FURNISH ME!!!!!!!
I bought a picture frame once, and that thing has been painted every color of the rainbow, and used for so many various projects – its debuted as my sisters placecard holder at her wedding, a empty photo frame, leaning up against the wall, chalkboard, and continues to be used for new projects. LOVE IT!!!

Furnish me!
I think our best piece of furniture is a Pottery Barn Bed that we saved up for at the beginning of our marriage. In our tiny house, it looked nice, gave us tons of storage (in baskets), and managed to survive our move. Now we’ve changed our style, but it still looks great.
Karly Watkins says
FURNISH ME! I love this tall boy dresser i got from an antique store. It has such rich color and so many drawers and lines.

FURNISH ME!!
My favorite piece of furniture is a trunk from my great-grandfather, which my mom bravely gave us a few years ago, that we use as a coffee table. My mom has a house full of amazing antiques that she has found over the years, I have started requesting that all gifts just come from inside her home :)
Alex Cosgrove says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is an IKEA Karlstaad couch I found on craigslist for $30! I’m moving into a new apt this weekend and can’t wait to set everything up! You guys are a total inspiration for all my DIY projects :)

Furnish Me!
My favorite piece is an antique oak teacher desk from the early 1900’s that I think my Dad picked up at an estate sale, and my grandparent’s antique art-deco bed (even though it’s slats and it falls apart all the time). They don’t match at all but they’ve both traveled with me through college and beyond to my many homes along the way.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is a 1960’s original-upholstery Dux couch that we bargain-scored right before moving from Phoenix to Seattle. It looked super dreary and hideous when we bought it and we figured that we’d have to invest in some new upholstery, but to our surprise and joy, the gross-in-Phoenix color and texture looks made-for-Seattle perfect in our new place! Plus, it’s comfortable, well-built and the perfect height and width for 4’11 me and my also short hubby!

I would say the most useful piece of furniture I own is my bed. It’s a platform bed from CB2 with a headboard that serves as a nightstand too. It’s just perfect!

I love my headboard with attached side tables that my dad built in the ’80s.

FURNISH ME!
My best piece is my dining room table – found it on Craigslist, convinced my dad and some strangers to help me move it into my place – it’s cherry, handmade, about 20 years old, very simple, and woe to anyone who puts a drink on it without a coaster!
erin says
FURNISH ME!! i don’t know if we have one particular piece of furniture that i can ooh and ahh over. within the past few years, my husband unfortunately lost his last 3 grandparents. we inherited a lot of solid wood tables and dressers which cam at the perfect time since we just bought a house last year and had to furnish it. definitely not the way i would want to get so much solid wood furniture, but now he’ll have his grandparents with us always.
Jacque says
FURNISH ME! Pretty attached to my bamboo papasan chair – nothing too spectacular, but it was the first piece of furniture I ever bought in college, and it fits so nicely now with my east asian themed tv room.

FURNISH ME! An antique deacon’s bench
Teresa says
FURNISH ME! Can’t say I have any real favorite pieces, most are hand me downs from my in-laws. However, one day this summer while going for a walk I came across a pretty neat small three legged table. Thinking it would be at least five, I asked the owners and they said they’d sell it to me for a buck! I took some fabric that I had, flung it over and put a lantern on it. Now it sits on our deck. There you go, I guess my favorite piece is worth a dollar. FURNISH ME!

Furnish Me!!!
My greatest piece of furniture is a 1940’s dresser I recently received from my parents as a birthday gift. Once it was repainted it fit perfectly with the other furniture in my house!

I don’t have a greatest piece, but I would love to add one (or several) to my collection of otherwise unimpressive furniture!
Sarah M. says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is the coffee table that I got ridiculously on sale at one of the Hickory, NC furniture outlets. My mom refinished it for me, and it looks awesome!

Furnish me! My favorite pieces are the things I’ve inherited from family. I love anything with a story and a history.

The piece I love the most is the nursery crib we bought for our son. It wasn’t expensive, nothing amazing about it, but it means a lot to us since it was for our sweet baby boy.
