Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I love the dresser I got at an antique store in Maine when I lived up there. It’s simple but well built, and I have big plans to refinish it one of these days.

We have some reclaimed wood pieces that we LOVE. They were made years ago, (before reclaimed wood was trendy!) by my Grandfather out of wood from a barn in PA.

I’ve been using the same antique dresser for pretty much my whole life – it’s “well-loved” rather than well preserved, but it was my changing table when I was a baby and is still in my bedroom today.

I have a cookie jar that is the most sentimental and important piece in my home. Not so much bones, but heart.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece is the bed my husband and I picked out when we got married. It was a splurge, but I still love it.
Georgie says
Furnish me! Our best pieces are probably our coffee table and matching endtable. They have drawers and also storage under the top of the table but above the drawers. So things like remotes, our Skyrim player’s guide, etc. that we use all the time (and therefore don’t want in a drawer) don’t have to litter the top of the table unless they’re currently in-use.

We recently splurged on a custom upholstered u-shaped sectional after having mismatched hand me down couches from our college days. We couldn’t love it more!
Lindsay says
Furnish ME!!!! My favorite piece is an old dresser that my husband got from his great-grandmother. It’s very 50’s retro cool.

FURNISH ME! I have a love for what my family calls “early attic/late basement” furniture. All our furniture has some from family members or thrift find with a few store bough pieces sprinkled in….my FAVORITE piece is my grandmother’s custom made Chippendale sofa. When I inherited it the fabric was formal and faded. I had it slipcovered in a fun cranberry twill so it would go with all my stuff. LOVE IT!

Furnish me! I love our Italian leather sofa.

Being such a reading nerd, I gotta go with the bookcases. Walls and walls of them!

The greatest piece of furniture we own is a farmhouse table. It was my husband’s grandmother’s when she was a child growing up on her family’s farm in Ohio. The table has never been refinished and has tons of character (scratches, dents) – I can only imagine the family dinners that were had around this table!

I have a great solid wood roll-top desk that my brother found at a flea market. It was passed around among my siblings before I snagged it, and I don’t plan on giving it back =).

My favorite piece is probably an old dresser I got on craigslist and completely re-did it. sanded, painted, added embossed wood pieces on the drawers, even fixed one of the drawers that was missing a big slice out of its front, and of course added some cute knobs!

My husband inherited his grandparents’ bedroom set, which his late grandfather refinished. All of our other furniture is hand-me-down, craigslisted, or on loan from friends who didn’t want to pay for storage units. :)
Wow- what a great giveaway this week!

FURNISH ME! My greatest piece is one I bought right after we were married, my first real wood piece, that didn’t need to be assembled, its a buffet/sideboard/ beauty to behold that I try to make the statement in what ever room it ends up in.

FURNISH ME! We have two! One is the old book case my grandmother gave us that sat in my grandfather’s office for as long as I can remember. The other is the old china hutch my other grandmother gave us. We have nice new stuff too, but these two old family pieces mean more :)

I go back and forth with my favortism every few days. Currently, I’m in love with an awesome chest I found at a thirft store years ago. I painted it a deep red and faux-aged it to look exactly like a PB piece that was selling at the time for $400. We paid $5 for it. It was worth every penny. It’s boiunced around our house serving so many purposes, I wish it had twin sisters.
melissa says
ooooh! FURNISH ME, please! My very favorite furnishing is an old window that I turned into a mirror. It’s fun, practical, and sentimental!

When I was first married, I found an antique twin iron bed that was completely rusty & dirty. We took it home, cleaned it up and both of my sons spent part of their childhoods in it. Now they are grown, but I look forward to sleepy grandchildren dreaming the night away in it someday.

Without question, my favorite piece of furniture that I own is a baby dresser that my great-great grandfather made about 80 years ago. It even has a mini wardrobe with a wooden rod to hang baby clothes. I am obsessed with it and can’t wait to use it for my future baby one day! :)
Abby says
FURNISH ME! My favorite pieces are still at my parents’ home… their handmade dining and bedroom furniture kill me (in the best way). One day!

We scored a great dining room set by helping a family member move. They no longer needed it and said we could have it if we helped load up the moving truck and unload it at their new place. Totally worth it. I am loving the mission style table and 8 chairs and buffet. And the best part is that the fabric on the chair seats matches the plum walls in our dining room. I couldn’t have picked out anything better myself!

I love my old dining table. It’s from my mother, her family used it through her childhood. It has marks, dings & even paint on it….tons of character. I love it!

Our house came with these not so good looking chairs for the kitchen bar- light wood, hunter green, gold, etc. My husband decided to tackle renovating them to more our taste- wouldn’t hurt to give it a whirl since they were free. They turned out lovely and we adore them!
