Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I am completely in love with a library card cabinet my hubs found for me on Craigslist. I have wanted one since I was in elementary school (weird child), and he surprised me with it for our anniversary. It’s from the 1940s and has a great patina on the brass and wood. And each of the 72 drawers is the perfect size for storing wine bottles. Bonus: We didn’t know when he bought it that it originated from Southern Methodist University, where we both got ours master’s degrees. Found a sticker underneath noting that it was from the SMU library. Amazing!

Furnish Me! I love the dry sink my husband and I got at a flea market…it has a great copper basin and provides lots of good storage. And it just looks neat!

FURNISH ME! I think my favorite piece is the pair of adirondack chairs sitting on our deck. They were free – white and very yucky. We scrubbed them down and painted them a lovely royal blue. They’re my favorite place to sit and read, and I think they look amazing!

My favorite piece is a dresser that used to belong to a childhood friend’s older brother. It is long and deep and was the perfect size for me during grad school. Right now my younger sister has it in her first post-college apartment, but once my husband and I have kids I think we will repurpose it as a changing table.

I am just moving into my first place so I have nothing yet lol but I found this Ah-mazing 70’s couch on craigslist. Its blue, green & yellow plaid but in that non-yucky total statement piece way. I just hope it hasn’t been sold yet :S
Steph says
Furnish Me! For my sixteenth birthday, I received an unfinished bedroom set (dresser, bookshelf, bedside table) which I spent weeks sanding, staining and varnishing. I still use the same set in every bedroom I’ve lived in since.

I found a gorgeous French armoire on craigslist – this thing is 8′ long – and it is by far my favorite piece of furniture. Of course it helps that I was able to convince my husband to move all his clothes into it so I could have the closet to myself :)

The greatest piece that I own is the dining room table + chairs that the hubby and I picked up on Craigslist. It was another family’s first apartment table when they were just starting out, and they were selling it to make room for their growing needs. We’re just starting out, too, and I love that the piece came with a history and good future vibes.

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is a $10 headboard I purchased and painted off of CL….great find!

I am ridiculously fond of a console-table-height black bookcase we bought from Room & Board. It was a splurge, sure, but I just love it. No particular reason; maybe because it just speaks to me somehow.
Maureen says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is a pine Lexington hutch that I purchased for my new home following a divorce. I recently had to move into a much smaller home and gave away a lot of furniture. Several of my friends said they hoped I hadn’t given that hutch away (which I hadn’t). Now it seems I got rid of too much and would love to win this giveaway!

We have my bf’s parent’s bedroom set that I found buried while cleaning out their house. He lost both of his parents in a matter of two years, so sentimental items mean a ton more than they once did. They are timeless pieces with great bones that have that now aged to a ‘lovely’ yellowish-green stain with broken and missing gold handles and pulls. I plan to refinish the highboy and wide dresses, replace the hardware, and stain them a deep chocolate brown to coordinate with our sleigh bed without being too matchy, matchy. & then we can finally get rid of my two MALM dressers that I bought in college! haha.
Amy W says
FURNISH ME! What an amazing giveaway! My father-in-law built us a bed frame, dresser, and two nightstands. They are such great quality pieces and ones that mean a lot to us.

My greatest “piece” is actually a piece of art my sister made me for my college graduation. It has hung in every place I’ve lived since then (OMG, 20 years ago), and, after my dog, it’s the thing I’d grab if there were a fire.

FURNISH ME!
My favorite piece of furniture is an antique sewing machine/table that was my great grandma’s! It still has the bobbins and needles! It looks like a kind of sidle table, and then you flip open the top table slab and out pops the sewing machine!
Kristy says
FURNISH me!!!
I’m in love with this awesome solid wood dresser that I found on Craigslist for $40.. when I first came across it, I could hardly believe my eyes, and it looks even better in person! I almost felt BAD buying it because it could’ve easily sold for so much more. But it now lives happily in our guest bedroom and my husband and I always get compliments on it when people come over.

I love my dining table and 4 chairs which I purchased at a yard sale six years ago for $75. My friend’s mother who was at the same sale was also eyeing the goods…but I got to them first! She still asks me if I’m ready to sell them to her every time I see her.

A dresser that my mom and I scored for $75 for my very first apartment in college. We refinished it, changed the hardware, and it was a project we did together. I still have it, and it’s gone through some changes! Love the memories of it, because it was a project we did together my last summer at home. Miss those days!

I scored a great formal dining room table on craigslist. It came with 6 chairs, and has a leaf that will seat up to 8. I love it because its more dressy than a kitchen table, but not as stuffy as you see in some formal dining rooms.
Erika says
FURNISH ME! I have an awesome antique corner cabinet I found on Craigslist for 50 bucks. Got big plans for sprucing it up!
