Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece I currently own is a metallic painted mirror that hangs above my sectional. Somehow that made my apartment space feel like more homey and it doesn’t hurt that reflects my view so I can enjoy it from the kitchen.

My favorite item is a little five drawer dresser that my Dad built for my brother’s nursery and was handed down to me when I was born. I have it in our house now and though it isn’t a “wow” dresser to most people, it’s got a lot of sentimental value.

FURNISH ME! My first nice furniture purchase was an oak ball and claw dining table 25 years ago and I still love it.

I love a lot of things in my house right now, but my favorite is easily the dark wood “hope chest” my dad made for me when I moved out of my parents’ house and got my first real home. Not only is it beautiful, but it was made with love!

The greatest piece that I own is a dresser that I’ve had since infancy. In fact, as an infant, it also served as my first bed. My mother used to put me to sleep in one of the drawers (not closed! It was out of the dresser and on it’s own, no worries).
Erin says
FURNISH ME! The best piece we own is a weathered-looking wooden cabinet that we ran into unexpectedly at a local antique store here in Atlanta. Love it!
Ashley says

We inherited a lot of furniture from my husband’s grandmother but our favorite is our oak china cabinet with the inside painted Tiffany blue. It was like that when we inherited it! And we also love the sloped wingback chair with a bird pattern. Who knew his grandma was so stylish?

It’s hard to say which is the best piece since I’ve scored some cool furniture pretty cheaply. Maybe the Thaden Jordan sideboard made of bent plywood that was on super clearance at a vintage store.

I just re-did my bedroom and this stuff would look phenomenal in it! My favorite piece of furniture is my antique desk I just recently scored for 20 buckeroos. It makes the best little office.
BrassyDel says
FURNISH ME! I love my office trestle table desk, though the paint job is a titch shoddy (wears through easily), probably because it’s a Target piece. But I saved up at a crappy job for it, and it’s got a great shape!
Katie says
FURNISH ME! I found a dresser chest on a curb that was in great shape except for a loose drawer – easy fix & it’s free!
Jennifer says

The old kitchen table I ate breakfast at every day growing up.

“FURNISH ME!” The greatest piece of furniture that I currently own is an old wooden chair that my grandfather used to sit on at work. He took him home with him after he retired and it is a beautiful perfectly blue painted chipped rustic chair. I am very in love with the history, charm and sentimental value.

FURNISH ME!
(ask me how big my eyes got when I realized how big this giveaway was)
My greatest haul so far I think is this yet to be touched dresser that I was given by a dear friend. It was covered in a fabric that had leopards hiding in the jungle. That quickly came down and I have yet to refurbish it. But one day soon, one day soon…
My best, Lynn
*this is the one, I can feel it!
laurel says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is a buffet I bought at goodwill for $40 and use as a media center. Someday I’ll paint it and replace the door insets with radiator sheet metal (with the pretty cutouts), but for now I appreciate it’s dark walnut stain and it’s usefulness.

Lisa says
Furnish me!!! My favorite piece of furniture I own is probably my bed. I had a twin bed my WHOLE life until I got married, and even though i don’t get to sprawl out across our queen since I obviously have to share with my husband, it helps me feel like I’m finally an adult!
Janet Parker says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is a cherry, four poster bed from Harden. It was quite a splurge 30 years ago, but so worth it.
Jennifer says
FURNISH ME!!!
My fave piece is a perfectly aged small jewelry chest that I got from a re-sale shop (she found it at an estate sale) for $6. It has mint green paint and gold leaf and is authentically worn down so it looks lovely!

My favorite piece is a DIY piece. My husband and I built our king sized bed a couple years ago over the christmas holidays. It took us a week working in an unheated workshop (in freezing temps!) to cut/sand/stain and construct our behemoth of a bed, but we love it and I love that we built it together.
Kristi F says
Furnish me!! My fav piece of furniture was $4 at a garage sale. A little paint and it looks like a million bucks :)
Tiffany says
Furnish me! To be honest, our furniture is a mix of yard sale finds and Ikea junk and there isn’t one piece that I am particularly fond of. After giving this question some thought i realize that i would really like to get some good quality furniture! But, we do have some great artwork that we’ve collected over the years that I love.
