***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I just got married and am slowing furnishing our new apartment. We got a really nice dresser that I am proud of at a really good price :)

FURNISH ME!!!
I have a beautiful dresser with a round mirror and sweet curves that I found in a secondhand furniture shop. It was in very very sad condition (the top was cracked, the drawers were lopsided, and so forth) but I took it home and loved it to beauty again! I sanded, filled in cracks, sanded, sanded, fixed, sanded, primed, sanded, primed, sanded, painted, sanded, painted, sanded, painted, and added hardware. It was truly a labor of love! I couldn’t hide it in a bedroom where no one would ever see it, so it sits in a nook in the hallway near the guest bathroom and holds my linens. Everyone loves its beautiful aqua color and its unique shape. I am so proud of it!

I love my desk. It belonged to my great grandfather. It has lots of little shelves and drawers – perfect for keeping some pictures and little trinkets my grandmother left me.

FURNISH ME!
The first piece of furniture my husband and I bought together was an old coffee table. It’s huge, a little warped, and in need of some TLC, but we love it! At one point, it was the ONLY thing we had in our living room.

Furnish me! Our bed…which we made…in the bathroom (!) of our teeny tiny first apartment. Seriously. Oh, and it’s the queen version of the bed Katie Bower made. Yea, you guys are inspiring.

FURNISH ME!!! Right now my fav piece is an ottoman that I am going to refurnish. I just love the shape and size. It would go perfect with the Cadman Chair from Pier 1.

Like so many others, I’m most happy about the furniture pieces in my house that I had a hand in building or refinishing.
I revived an old sling back chair earlier this summer by sewing new cushion covers and painting it a bold blue. Every time I look at it, I think about how much effort I put into it and it makes it feel just that much better!

Our kitchen island is by far the most used piece we have. It is even cooler that my father in law found it for us and thought it would be perfect for our kitchen. He was right!

FURNISH ME!! We have mostly new stuff but are the proud owners of a lovely sounding old wall clock. It hangs in our kitchen/dining room and when I lie in bed at night I can hear it tick.

Oh, I wish I had even one piece of furniture that I thought was worth writing about. Just a bunch of hand-me-down pieces that get us by. A few nice, new, just-ours pieces would be sweet!
Thanks!

I started thinking about the bonus question and I don’t have a favorite piece. I don’t really love any of my furniture. This makes me very sad, time to change it!

Furnish Me! Found a cute little metal outdoor patio table with chairs in a fun turquoise color that easily should have gone for $275 but I snagged it for $70!

Furnish Me! It’s a kitchen table my parents have had FOREVER! It’s old, heavy and metal, but it’s the memories this table brings. As a little girl, I remember perching up my tippie toes trying to see over the top to get a look at what was happening on the table. The table is at least 40+ years old.

I would say the dark wooden table my parents gave as a housewarming gift. I love how the leaf folds up and is stored underneath!

My brother made me a shelf made from the last peice of wood from my grandfather’s workshop. It is a honey gold treasure, from my grandfather, who was a mason, and my brother, who is a gifted woodworker. Could not live without it!

what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own: Most of my home is decorated with estate sale and garage sale finds over the years. I love it when I happen upon a good deal. My fav is my dining room table ~ Oval chrome with yellow formica top ~ with 3 chairs ~ found at one of my fav stores (Country Bumpkins) for a great price =)
Susan says
Furnish me! I have two favorite pieces. One is the PB Montego dining room table my husband and I splurged on after we bought our first house. The other is an old buffet I found on Craigslist and refinished as my first real painting/re-finishing project. Each piece is very sentimental for different reasons.

I am a law student on a budget, so most of my things are hand-me-downs still. That said, I think my favorite, most versatile piece is an overside floor mirror that I currently have hanging horizontally above my bed to create a headboard illusion.

i’m so sorry, i can’t pick just one. we have a striped cream and beige couch that we got on craigslist for only TWENTY BUCKS! everyone who comes over loves it, and though one corner is taped (it’s in corner so no one sees it) and the cushions slide and can get lumpy if we let them, it was so cheap and looks wonderful. the other piece is a handmade entry table made by my husband’s uncle. he is a wonderful cabinet and furniture maker and he made it from different woods as a gift to us. it is so beautiful and was such a surprise!!!

FURNISH ME!!! I found some old coffee table books to paint and refinish for decoration in my new living room end tables.
Carolyne says
Furnish me! The best piece of furniture in my home is a classic mid century bi-level coffee table. It was hidden away in a basement back corner of a mid-century resale shop. The drawers push through and open on both sides so it can also be used as a room divider. The shop owner saw us staring at it and asked us about our plans. When I shared that it would be a perfect TV stand for our flat screen TV you could tell she hadn’t though of selling it as such. We walked with a fantastic price because we had the imagination to make the piece work!
Beth says
FURNISH ME! We have this really cool “coffee table” that used to be used to make sails for ships!
