Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I am in such great need of furniture! My favorite piece was my bed… unfortunately when I moved about a year ago I had to sell it, and now that I’m back I need to start the search all over again (*tears).

FURNISH ME…a turquoise side table from a thrift store my husband and I bought together.

The greatest piece of furniture we own is our desk. It is a Hooker Partner’s desk so we each get to sit on one side. It is huge and ornate and beautiful and we found out after our horrendous efforts to haul this into our house on our own that the total weight was like 600 pounds. When we buy our next house, we will definitely be hiring professionals to take apart and move this desk for us.

Furnish me! Please :) I have an old table my grandmother used to use to store fabric and sewing supplies. It’s still functional and beautiful! Thanks!

My favorite piece of furniture is a large (and I mean large!) jewelry cabinet my grandma had made specially made for me. We share a love of having way too much jewelry! Knowing she took the time to have it made will always make it something I will treasure dearly.

My favorite piece is our china cabinet. It was a wedding gift (our first real piece of furniture together) and it provides so much storage.

Furnish me! My husband and I sleep in the same antique wrought iron bed that I have been sleeping in since I was 4 years old. My parents bought it at a garage sale for $20 – a steal of a deal for a bed frame that now is worth over a thousand dollars!
Lorelle says
Furnish me! I bought an antique dresser on Craigslist and refinished it. It was my first big DIY project and I’m so happy with how it turned out!

FURNISH ME!!!
Most of my furniture is from Ikea, so I don’t have too many really unique pieces. I do have one night stand that I have had all my life. It’s not particularly vintage or expensive, but I have lovingly painted and repainted it several times. It’s like a giant art experiment that I keep doing and, like the rings of a tree, the layers of paint each tell a different stage of my life (and what my favorite color was at each repainting!)

I have a sweet, vintage vanity chair. Love it!

FURNISH ME!
I have a large fabric print that my parents bought in San Fransisco on their honeymoon that has an awesome retro vibe (a geniune retro vibe, as it was bought in the 70’s!), and always looks great no matter where we put it.

Furnish me! My favorite is a dry sink that I inherited from my great-grandmother. I guess technically my parents inherited it and I sweet-talked them out of it. :)

My best piece is definitely the buffet I found that’s dark and mint green. It’s got great structure, and the coloring has just the right amount of fun!
Michele G. says
FURNISH ME! Probably the piece that means the most to me is my tv stand – not because its so fabulous (its from crate and barrel) but because it reduced me to tears when putting it together on my own but I persevered and got it together in the end!

My most favorite piece of furniture that I own is my son’s crib. I love how it will transition into a daybed when he grows more and then into framing for a twin bed! That is an excellent buy in my book!
Katherine says
FURNISH ME! We have a large vintage roll-top desk that is completely out of scale to our modest sized house, but we love it and could never give it up!

For my wife’s sake “FURNISH ME!”
We’ve got a house full of hand-me-downs and I’d love her to have some things I know she’d love!

Furnish me! The best piece of furniture in my family is definitely the vintage china cabinet my dad brought home one day. He paid about 80 bucks for this monstrosity that had been black lacquered with green neon interior. After many moons of stripping (seven layers of paint, y’all) he got it down to the bones: two toned wood -a gorgeous cherry exterior with blonde drawers and doors.
The day he brought it home, I thought it was the ugliest thing I had ever seem him buy -boy was I wrong!

I love the pieces my dad makes. He’s a great woodworker
Tanya says
“FURNISH ME!!” To date, my best piece has to be my 70’s style velvety avacado-meets-lime couch. I needed furnishings and a work friend’s gramma was getting ride of stuff. I scored the couch and a cheesy late 70’s(?) love seat for $125. That was about 8 years ago and it’s still the comfiest! I love the color so much that it was the inspiration for my walls. It’s amazing how so much of my decor already goes so well with the green.

The only piece of furniture I’ve bought new is my red couch…which I love, but is now 6 years old and showing some wear.

We have an old Danish modern buffet that is pretty fantastic, even if it needs some TLC.
Thanks, Sherry and John.
Missy in NoVa says
Furnish me! I love my hand-me-down dining room table–even if it’s just from Ikea–because of all the fun memories made sitting around it eating with friends and family. My least favorite is my “break-up couch” that has been the scene of my last two break-ups…
Alyssa Sheldon says
FURNISH ME!
I got an amazing 1957 mid-century modern wood desk that used to be in a hospital for cheaper than most new desks at IKEA.
Emily M says
FURNISH ME! The greatest piece of furniture I ever bought I don’t actually own – I gifted it to my mom. It was an awesome lacquered wood folding screen with brass feet that I scored at a tag sale. It’s the highlight of my parents dining room now. I really don’t have any decent furniture in my own home, mostly hand-me downs that are standing in until we have money to buy what we really want. So of course this giveaway would be a dream come true.
Ansley says
Furnish me!We have a beautiful antique book case that we just love. On the other end of the spectrum, I also love a cubby storage piece from West Elm that has really cleaned up our family room!

FURNISH ME! My husband and I found a small round table and two chairs for $15 at a local flea market. It’s perfect for our kitchen nook and I have plans to paint and maybe add a fun stencil on it.
