Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite is my dresser that I refinshed to look like a Pottery Barn piece a few years ago. I’ve had the same dresser my whole life and it’s had several coats of paint over the years… but I think this look will stick for a while!

Furnish me!!!! My gave piece was a total splurge – a turn of the century dental cabinet that sits in our dining room. A total “saw it and had to have it” but one of the best purchases ever!

An end table I bought on CL that was super ugly, but the perfect size and look I wanted. After painting it white and shining the drawer pulls, it gets compliments and is the sturdiest piece of furniture we own! I’ve got before-and-afters of course:

Our greatest piece of furniture is our dining room table – it was my husband’s great grandmother’s table. I love thinking of the generations that have enjoyed meals, played games, prayed together, cried together, celebrated, done homework, rolled cookies, and just plain lived around it!

I have a wood desk I inherited from my mom, who had it in her room as a teen–I even found a pay stub from her high school job behind one of the drawers! When it came to me, it had a very unfortunate and sloppy white paint job over the entire surface, so I stripped the top and stained it a dark walnut, then brushed a coat of turquoise over the rest of the desk and sanded the heck out of it. It sits in my entry and I love it. I’m still on the hunt for a vintage industrial metal chair for it, but I’m patient.

FURNISH ME!! The piece of furniture I am most proud of is this beautiful pedestal table that I got off craigslist when I was first moving into my apartment in Boston. Two chairs, and a round, solid wood top that folded down on both sides, it was a bit loved but great overall. for $30 bucks! My boyfriend & I refinished it and it looks beautiful today — makes me proud of my first “real” DIY project!

FURNISH ME!!!! . . .please?
My favorite piece is actually a bench I recently purchased. Maybe it’s because it’s new and not something I typically would have purchased, but I did it and I love it. :)

I think my favorite piece in our home right now is a recliner that used to be in my dad’s office and now lives in our living room. My husband laughed at me when I said I wanted to take it, but was then so happy that we had somewhere to sit furniture in our otherwise empty apartment. We used to take turns sitting in the real chair!

One of my favorite pieces is a small table that was given to me by my grandparents. It is anything but perfect condition and that is what I love so much about it. I love the chipped wood, scuff marks and every other imperfection about it!

I have an antique library table I use as a dining room table that was passed down from my mother. She found it in the back corner of an antique shop and refininshed it herself. I have so many memories of family dinners and game nights at that table. Since putting it in my dining room – I don’t even use my office when I work from home. Something about seeing papers all over it just seems right. And, it has a drawer that I keep extra notepads and pens in.

I still live like a recent college grad – ikea furniture & what not, mostly because I live in a 6th floor walk-up and the idea of carrying new furniture upstairs and old furniture downstairs gives me the shakes!
That being said,I have a fun beaded chandelier that has a prominent place in my tiny apartment! Who knew a chandelier could make a great end-table lamp? :)
