Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

Right now my favorite pieces are 2 armless loveseats from my grandmother’s house. After a tornado they were about to be loaded in the trash truck when my aunt saved them for me. My mom got them recovered for me as a suprise birthday present. They are so sentimental and look great too.

I love the work bench my husband built for my kitchen. It creates so much needed space that we didn’t have before. Plus, it’s the one piece of furniture friends often ask where it was purchased or how can they get one.

I’m not overly attached to any of our furniture–my fiance and I have moved at least once a year, and we’ve learned to keep things sparse. But we did recently sink a few hundred bucks into a bed frame. It’s nothing special. Just an Ikea bed. But it was the first big purchase we made together as a household of two, and we’re about to move it to the home where we’ll spend the months between now and our wedding!

I think my favorite piece of furniture is my dining table. It’s not fancy but it was the first piece of new furniture I ever bought. As our new empty-living-roomed house can attest, I need to be furnished! But that table and the four thrift store chairs work great for now.

I have these 2 really cool mid-century loveseats from my grandmother. They still have the original green & gold jacquard fabric on them, but I am having them recovered soon to use in my bedroom. Pieces of the original fabric will be framed as art and a way to remember my grandmother. :)
Anna-Lisa says
FURNISH ME! We just moved cross country and craigslisted most of our furniture beforehand, so now we’re working to furnish our new apartment with only things we love! Just found a beautiful midcentury buffet on craigslist which we adore.

I just love an inlaid ebony and mother-of-pearl hutch I picked up on the cheap many moons ago. It has inspired me over the years in different rooms!
Melissa Breau says
Furnish me! I don’t currently owe much furniture, since I sold almost everything I owned before moving and am slowing re-furnishing my place but the best thing we DO own is either our Comfortpedic mattress or our awesome couch (a sectional found on CL for next to nothing, in excellent shape).

My favorite piece is probably our bed frame with 4 huge drawers underneath. It’s from Ikea but is it the Only piece we really bought for our apartment! Everything else is just a collection of hand-me downs. We were so freaked out when we bought it that we kept the boxes for 2 weeks before we decided we were in fact adult enough to own it! We still love it.
Katie says
FURNISH ME! Our house if full of “inherited” furniture, but my favorite thing currently is my upholstered headboard. I snagged it from a designer friend (along with some custom raw silk drapery panels), and it makes our bedroom sing! It is totally custom, and still was cheaper than buying a plain one anywhere else. I know I will love it for years to come!

I have a great sofa with wicker panels that I was given my uncle. It needs some TLC, but it is beautiful. Great ‘bones’ as the book would say.

My favorites are a set of Lane dovetailed coffee and end tables from the 60s found on Craigslist.
Rachel says
Furnish me! The greatest piece that I own is a burgundy velvet sofa for our sunroom. The cats also love it and we have to frequently de-fur it, but it is still absolutely fabulous.

FURNISH ME! My favorite furniture is a dining set that belonged to my great grandmother.

FURNISH ME! Last summer we found this amazing coffee table at our favorite vintage store for about 1/3 of what we had seen other, roughly comparable tables selling for. It’s sort of hard to describe, but it basically looks like someone vertically sliced a giant tree, laid the slab sideways, and attached simple trinagular iron legs to it. The finish is a little dark, but the wood itself is gorgeous. Absolutely love it.
Ashlee says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece is my pottery barn couch. It was a hand-me-down from my sister but it is the most comfortable thing ever! Never getting rid of it.

This could not be more perfectly timed – just this weekend we rearranged our bedroom completely, and need a loveseat size chair – the The Hazel Settee would be a PERFECT fit. And, the other items would go great in various spots throughout our home. My current favorite piece of furniture is our DIY desk, for two people, utilizing our awesome/functional (but ugly) filing cabinets, hidden behind new glass-front doors. My husband built it, and it is the best!
Kaitlyn says
FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is a 60’s couch that was left when we bought our house from it’s original owners!

FURNISH ME!
I have a small, cozy love seat that was in my grandparents’ house growing up. I would always fall asleep there after family dinner or on holidays. When they moved out of the house, I got the love seat, and my Dad re-covered it for me with an even softer green fabric (the old fabric was wearing out) as a college graduation gift. It is SUCH a lovely place to sit and read or watch a movie, and I love the memories attached to it as well.
Kathryn Good says
“FURNISH ME!” I love furniture and have a lot of pieces that I love. I am currently sitting on my down stuffed green velvet loveseat, which is not only the most comfortable loveseat ever, but it is also stunning and I scored it for $89.

FURNISH ME! I was garage saling and came across an antique post box that’s wooden and turquoise. So pretty much perfect! I bought it for $20 and it’s hanging in my son’s nursery. Love finding those treasures!

Hubby has a mantle clock that belonged to his fave Grandma.
I have my mom’s pressed glass collection and her square brownie pan. Both of these amazing women are now gone, but we remember and honor them by using their “everyday” things in our lives.
Both my twins have moved into new places and could use that furniture! Fingers crossed for winning here :)
