***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

After far too many years with my hand-me-down college sofa, I finally bought a new one a few months ago. So right now it is winning the competition for greatest piece in my house, if for no other reason than how happy I was to see the old, falling apart sofa leave!

I love the custom headboard table/storage I made out of an old bookcase on its side behind my Malm bed’s headboard – it’s almost the perfect with, and some extra cloth to cover the ugly? – perfect place for my computer, baskets, lamp, and other bedtime nic-nacs. The one they sell at IKEA is about $300, and the only extra convenience to it is roll-out drawers. I keep all my extra blankets and things I don’t want to toss but don’t want sitting out in the storage area.

My favorite piece is the dresser my husband had since his childhood. We finally dusted it off and restored it, painting it black and giving it modern drawer pulls. Now it sits proudly in our guest room and is stunning!
Kaitlin Jenkins says
FURNISH ME! We have zero good furniture (minus our bed) so I really can’t even explain to you how much I could use this!

My favorite pieces in my home are the bedroom set we refinished for my little boy. But I have a house of hand me dows and would love some new things!

Furnish Me! I’m super excited about our new navy blue upholstered bed that I got for a steal from Joss & Main – hopefully it arrives soon, the wait is killer!

We don’t have any “great” pieces. :( All of our stuff is pretty generic. Our house needs A LOT of design help. I always get scared of taking risks. I for sure need this book and the furniture. :)

I love our dining room table, but that was a hand-me-down from my aunt, so not a super splurge! But our biggest, and comfiest, splurge would have to be our couch! It’s super soft, and perfect for some Bravo-TV watching :)

My current favorite piece is a vintage Drexel desk that I got from the free section of craigslist. Now it just awaits a makeover. I’m just a wee bit plagued with indecision as to whether I want to paint it or sand/stain it.
Alison U. says
FURNISH ME! I haven’t refinished it yet, but a hutch and corner piece that we scored on Craiglist are my favorite. I know I’ll love it even more when it’s redone!

My favorite piece is an antique desk that has been passed down through the family. It has cast iron legs, ink wells, and the top lifts open to still bright red original paint in the storage area. It’s a beauty.
Alison says
Furnish me! My favorite piece is actually not technically furniture. I got a huge gold picture frame for free from a garage sale and then added some melamine painted with chalkboard paint to create a massive chalkboard.

FURNISH ME!!!!
My most prized position is my tiny dining room table, because it was my great-great grandmothers table past down to many people in our family. I loves it, lots of family memories in it.

My house is full of beautiful built-ins that a prior owner built. They far surpass any of my IKEA furniture :)

Furnish me, please!
My fave pieces are a toss-up between the antique sewing table I refinished (amazing wrought iron included), and my new (to me) vintage bar cart I scored at Brimfield this weekend. I feel so Mad Men!
Ashleigh says
FURNISH ME! I could SO use this fab freebie. I don’t currently have a favorite piece of furniture besides my piano. We have furnished the house from Craigslist before I had really developed a style, so it’s a bit thrown together.

My greatest piece(s) would be the leather chair & ottoman I bought in 2009. Sort of a “you survived” reward after the two-year-long death rattle of my husband. Extremely comfortable and a much-coveted perch for my dogs.

I was given my great grandmothers buffet and dining table and chairs from the 1910’s! The chairs are on ther last leg (literally), but the buffet is the piece that everyone comments on when in my house. It has quite a history!

Our greatest piece is my late grandma’s china cupboard that my granddad gave her for their 10th anniversary. I LOVE it!

I have several pieces, but probably the best one is this vintage tea chest I inherited. The colors are still incredibly vibrant and it makes an awesome side table (and conversation piece).
Ashley says
Oh dear, please furnish me! The hubs and I have wanted to splurge on great furniture for a while, but other, more important expenses seem to constantly get in the way. Until then, I keep my eye out for deals at garage sales and thrift shops that I can refinish or paint!

My husband and I made a couple of bookshelves and then stained them. They are the focus of our living room and I think they look pretty dang good! They are also a lot better quality then most anything we could buy in the store and they cost a lot less too!
Gigi says
FURNISH ME!! My favorite piece is a 1865 library table passed down from my great-grandmother.
Jennifer says
Furnish Me! I have an old quilt from the civil war made from gun powder bags!

Actually, I have two “best” pieces of furniture. One is an antique mission-style dresser. I paid $400 for it at an antique mall when I was in my twenties and still living with roommates in Boston. It was the first piece of real furniture I owned – everything else was cheap unstained pine, cinderblocks, and futons. The second awesome piece is a mission desk which I got for the amazing price of 2 six-packs of beer! A grad school acquaintance lived in one of those mega houses and the desk was in the hallway, unclaimed. He had plans to cut it up and turn it into a bar. I insisted that I take it away for him, and in exchange provide beverages. Best swap ever.
Enjoying your bright colorful blog; keep it up!

My husband and I actually bought a Paula Dean king size bed that we just love. It is very southern with plantation looking shutters as the headboard. I just love it as it goes with our bedroom vibe of “beach chic!”

My favorite piece in our house right now is a dresser my husband’s parents gave us. I repainted it and use it as a sideboard in our family room.

I am currently in love with the $10 Craigslist dresser that I painted a bold red. It is in the guest room I just finished and it makes me smile every time I walk by that room.

FURNISH ME! One of the best investments we made was some quality furniture for our screened-in porch. We replaced some random, mismatched furniture with a simple, clean sectional and ottoman and it totally transformed the porch into an awesome outdoor living space!

I actually don’t have any vintage pieces (I have an older sister who inherited most of the old furniture from grandparents), but I do love this one upholstered armchair that I bought at a resale shop for $35! It’s a steal! :)

FURNISH ME
My granparents owned a furniture store and made all their own pieces. For every big occasions (graduation, engagement, big birthdays) I’ve gotten pieces of family furniture like a cherry dining room table or a set of dresser drawers! Its so special since my great grandfather made them.
Skylar says
Furnish me – I love our couch that my wife thankfully loved too when we bought it. I’m 6’3, and I wanted a couch that I could stretch out on and sit on without feeling like I was on mini furniture. This one does the trick!

I love this super comfy (and very ugly) chair. It belonged to my grandparents. I can’t wait until I can recover it. Until then, it hangs out in my sewing room where no one can see it.
