***This giveaways has reached it’s cap of 10,000 and is now closed – see who won below!***
Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

The greatest piece I own is this fugly pink winged back chair and ottoman in my bedroom. My sister says I need to get rid of it, but it was my mother’s (a garage sale find) and both my husband and I love it. Someday I’d love to reupholster it as a DIY project. When I’m brave enough. It is really ugly. Just needing to someday find its swan clothes.

I love my antique dresser and antique Jenny Lind bed. Now to only have an extra bedroom to set them up in again (our second bedroom got repurposed into the kiddo’s room when he was born – baby and antiques didn’t quite go together).

My best and favorite deal is a pair of Coach flats that I scored on clearance at the end of the season from Macys. I’ve worn them so much in the past 9 years that I’ve had to get them re-soled twice.

Our house is still filled with hand-me-downs. I do love our ridiculously comfortable mattress. It was definitely a splurge, but well worth it.

One of my best pieces is an abstract art piece about 5′ wide that I got for FREE. Someone brought it down for an auction and no one bid on it and they didn’t want to take them home because it was so big so I got to take it.

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is the dresser in my daughter’s room. It was in my uncle’s bedroom when he was a kid (and he’s 66). We don’t know how old it is exactly, but it’s small, solid and has very clean lines.

FURNISH ME! My favorite is the modern cocoa leather chair-and-a-half we bought at a furniture store a few years ago. We had bought a table that turned out to be defective, and we spotted this beauty in the markdowns when picking out our exchange.

FURNISH ME! FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture we have is an antique, solid wood, corner hutch cabinet with rounded glass doors. It was handed down to us from my parents. It is a perfect place to display special photos of our loved ones. Hopefully it gets handed down for generations to come.

FURNISH ME!!! One of my best scores was a beautiful china hitch for $28. I had been looking for a hitch to display my grandmothers china and part of the fun for me is personalizing it so I was on the hunt for months. I finally found it about two months ago and painted, glazed and made it mine. It now houses her china beautifully, I LOVE IT!!

The greatest piece of furniture I own is a tie between the $1,800 Room & Board sofa I got off of Craigslist 3 years ago for $300 and the 1960’s mid-century modern dresser I got off of Craigslist a month ago for $150. I looked it up online and similar dressers are going for $500+! Craigslist for the win!

Hard question…if the house was burning and I could only save one thing, it would be the rocking chair my husband bought for me to rock our first son. It’s small and sweet and has a wicker seat. (didn’t mean to rhyme).

I don’t have any real furniture yet, because I just graduated from college and can’t buy furniture without a paycheck. However, I have picked up some awesome accessories during my undergrad years, including a silver bud vase and pair of candlesticks I got at the open-air market in Vienna during my semester abroad. They are so beautiful, and a great reminder of my time overseas–plus, they’re small enough that I can take them with me wherever I move!
Alyssa says
FURNISH ME! We have an amazing vintage sofa that was a hand me down. It clashes with pretty much everything in our apt. at the moment but I’m looking forward to designing a room around it someday.

Missy Holden says
FURNISH ME! The kitchen table and chairs that we happened upon in Canada and couldn’t stop thinking about are probably the best pieces in our house. A pain to get over the border, but have had them for about 10 years and still love them. Crossing my fingers for the above batch of goodies!!!
Candice says
FURNISH ME! Technically, they’re two pieces, but my favorite is our set of large square wooden storage boxes. Right now, we’re using them as side tables. We’ve also used them as toy boxes, blanket storage, and a window seat (pushed together with a blanket over them). They’re a rich dark wood with lots of texture. Plus the hinges on them are safety grade and don’t slam on toddler fingers.
Laura C says
FURNISH ME! We have a house full of grad school handmedowns that I pretty much hate and can’t wait to have the money to replace…but I’ll never get rid of my cedar chest or three big real wood bookshelves, handmade by my late grandpa.

FURNISH ME! My favorite pieces right now are two adirondack chairs that we just spray painted orange. They were pretty beat up and we were ready to get rid of them. But after some inspiration from YOUR site, I proposed the idea of spray painting them to my husband. Throughout the project my mantra was “light and even coats.” They look fabulous and I can’t stop looking at them! Thank you for the help!

My favorite piece in my new home (only 2 mortgage payments so far!) is an antique, solid-wood HUGE mirror that was removed from the wall behind a bathroom vanity in an old farm house. It’s beat up and half-painted over, but I love it and it fits the character of my 1923 home! Besides complementing my 10-ft ceilings!

My husband and I just moved back from 2 years in Madrid, Spain, so we don’t have much furniture at this point! But, one thing I was sure to put in storage was an oak baby changing table that my grandfather made for me when I was born. He was a carpenter and an architect, and his work inspired me to become an architect as well! He has passed on, but I am so grateful that I have this simple piece he created as a small legacy of his work and love of family.
