Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

My favorite piece… Sentimentally, my grandma’s vanity purchased in 1942. We refinished the red hued veneer and it is now black. I most love the huge circular mirror. Makes me feel cozy when I look at it. :-) Practically, our grown-up splurge on a nice mattress.

Nearly everything in our house is hand-me-downs. Our bedroom furniture is from IKEA, which we bought with money received for our wedding four years ago. My favorite item is actually our dining table, which is a family piece and was part of one of my great or great-great grandmothers’ dowries.

FURNISH ME!!!!
My favorite piece is as mirror that my grandmother left me when she passed. It’s not really my style as it’s very ornate but I think of her every time I see it. I very recently painted it a teal ombre and I LOVE it.

My favorite piece is a Morris chair I inherited from my grandmother. It was re-upholstered with a garish chevron pattern in the mid-70s, so someday soon I hope to re-re-upholster it in rich red leather.
Nichole says
FURNISH ME!! I’m most proud of a cheapo laminate chest of drawers I refinished for my daughter’s room. I primed and painted the frame a bright satin white and covered the drawers with swirly-patterned (I think I made that phrase up) paintable wallpaper which I also painted bright white.
Alisha H says
FURNISH ME!!! I bought a $40 mirror and spray painted the frame cherry red! I love it and it works so perfectly in my daughters’ room.

I am currently in love with my new dining light. A chandelier made from clear, glass milk bottles turned upside down and placed in three tiered circles on a wire sort of rack. Looks like a glamorous crystal piece from far away and as you get closer you see what is made of which brings on country flare and is a conversation piece.

FURNISH ME!
I am in love with my newish bedroom suite. I looked at numerous stores before convincing myself that quality wood furniture at a decent price does not exist anymore. My dad made the bed frame using plans from Ana White’s website (the chestwick platform bed). The dresser was a hand-me-down from my boyfriend’s grandmother. He actually used the dresser most of his childhood so it needed major love. I stripped it down only to find out the top two drawers were past repair. Trash it… I think not. I removed those drawers and tracks, cut some Lauan to fit, and drilled some holes in the back. It now holds our television/dvd player as wells as miscellaneous things (socks, deodorant, etc.) in the bottom drawers. I painted both a high gloss black. Now we have real furniture that has meaning. It fits my style so much better than anything I could have picked out of a catalog and at 21 it’s nice to know it’s paid for too.

Our greatest piece is a tiny little Eames table we received as a wedding gift from a friend. At the time, I didn’t even realize what a gem it was, but it didn’t take me long and now I dream of having some more Eames pieces to tuck around our house here and there.
