Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

One of my favorite pieces is a lamp I found at Goodwill for $3.99. I didn’t even know if it worked, but it had great lines and a beautiful finish. I lucked out when I brought it home… it works and perfectly balances the buffet it’s on.

I’m most proud of a club chair, inherited from my great aunt, that I reupholstered with help from my grandmother, who was in a nursing home. She instructed me on my technique and helped pick out the fabric and finish. Unfortunately, she passed away before seeing the finished project. Everyone tells me it looks professionally done- I couldn’t have done it without her help!

Pretty please! I think my favorite piece is an antique singer sewing machine and table that my sister’s MIL bought and refinished for me. My husband and I saw a similar one a few years ago at a yard sale, but it had a SOLD tag on it. Minutes later, my sister’s MIL pulls up in her truck – she was the buyer! When I told her that we were excited to see the piece and woudld have bought it ourselves, she started looking for a second one. It took her a few years to find the right one, which she bought and then restored for us. How sweet is that? Side note – we need a settee for our study or living room, and our dog’s name is Hazel, so the Hazel settee would be perfect for us :)

FURNISH ME! At my student work-study job in college, an old wooden office chair from the 60s was being thrown out. The chair was in great condition, and was beautifully shaped. I got the proper permissions and had my boyfriend pick me up in downtown Chicago. Lugging the chair down the elevator, over two blocks to the car, and up to our flat on the third floor was a work-out, but it was well-worth the effort. I love our “free” chair, and we get tons of compliments on it from guests.
Plus the chair has a great story.

I love both a long shelving unit and a dresser that I took from a yellow/pink/orange sponged montrosity (the shelf) and a bright red (the dresser) to a pretty muted down green. They’re both used to section off an area of my room to create a “closet” space in my otherwise closet-less room. :)

The coolest piece of furniture that we own is an antique dresser that we found on Craigslist. It’s the kind with the wavy front? I’m not sure what the correct term is for that.. but it’s super cool except for the one drawer that is broken.

FURNISH ME!! Our favorite piece of thrifted furniture is our Ethan Allen coffee table that we scored for $5 from a yard sale in our old neighborhood when we moved into our first house together. It has a glass top with open storage underneath and two drawers as well. It’ll have to go in storage or a different room than the living room soon since we have a little one on the way but we’re gonna enjoy it until then!

The best piece of furniture I own is a beautiful bookcase made from old barn board and cedar planks. The fact that it was made by an ex means it is slightly sentimental, but even if it weren’t, it’s just a beautiful and functional piece of furniture!

Its so sad that I don’t have a lot to be proud of, but I have a few mirrors (West Elm and a total Ballard copy from Home Goods) that make me soooo happy when I look at them, so I guess I’m most proud of those. I also have grown to like our “farmhouse” looking table that my husband built years ago from srap barn wood he salvaged during a teardown from a Habitat for Humanity volunteer project.
