Wow, you guys really have an appetite for great pieces! After less than 24 hours of giveaway madness, we have crowned our random winner as… joyfulcanary (whose favorite piece is a tie between her $30 thrift store China cabinet and her great grandmother’s Hoosier Cabinet). Congrats on your big win!
You don’t typically think of chemistry students writing home design books, but then we learned one of Sherry’s brother’s old classmates at Columbia wrote “Good Bones, Great Pieces” with her mother. It’s a beautiful book about how to combine seven essential elements, er, pieces of furniture in any room for a stunning result – and they’ve got a blog with even more eye candy too.
So not only are Suzanne and Lauren McGrath giving away a copy of their book this week, they’re also hooking up one of you with over $3,000 worth of furniture and bedding (!!!) so that you’ll be right on your way to achieving some of the looks shown above. Here are some of the “great pieces” you’ll be scoring:
-
The Hazel Settee from Jayson Home & Garden ($1,995)
-
The Navy Shop Chest from CB2 ($399)
- A rectangular Atoll Mirror from Ballard Designs ($199)
-
The Cadman Chair from Pier 1 Imports ($199)
-
A Queen-sized Light Indigo coverlet from John Robshaw ($420)
- The Hydrangea Dec Pillow also from John Robshaw ($155)
- PRIZE: A copy of Good Bones, Great Pieces plus over $3,300 worth of furniture as described above.
- TO ENTER: Comment on this post with the words “FURNISH ME!” and tell us…
- BONUS QUESTION: … what you consider to be the “greatest piece” you currently own. Did you splurge on a killer dresser once upon a time? Or maybe you inherited a vintage demilune table? Perhaps you happened upon the perfect bench at a yard sale one weekend?
- GIVEAWAY CLOSES: Wednesday, July 18th at 8pm EST or at 10,000 entries (whichever comes first)
- NUMBER OF WINNERS: One
- PRIZE SHIPS: The United States (although we do try to wrangle as many international giveaways as possible)
- USUAL STUFF: One entry per e-mail address is permitted. The winner will be selected using random.org and announced on Thursday as an update to this post. That’s right, come right back here on Thursday for the announcement of our winner. Good luck…
Note: We aren’t paid or perked for hosting these giveaways, we just do ‘em to thank you awesome folks for stopping in. See our Giveaway FAQ page for more info. Pics courtesy of Good Bones, Great Pieces.

I have an occasional table salvaged from a building that was about to be demolished after being damaged in the SF 1989 earthquake. It was ugly, black and spraypainted. I stripped and restored it and it is GORGEOUS! Score — and a story!

FURNISH ME! My favorite piece of furniture is a gorgeous oak dresser that my mom got from a neighbor when she was a child in California. It survived the great fire in San Francisco of 1906 AND me sticking gum and glow in the dark stickers on it when I was a kid. I love it and treasure it now. :-)

What a great give-away!
I found a great stone and marble octogonal coffee table at an estate sale. The original price tag was $380 (!) but I ended up knowing the guy who was running the sale and got it for $250.. Don’t mind if I do! :)

FURNISH ME! My all-time favorite piece is an old cherry chest of drawers that we inherited from my husband’s grandfather when he passed away. It was stained a horrible red color and the varnish was awful – but I refurnished it to perfection! It was the first time I’d done something like that, and it started an addiction to DIY!

I inherited a dresser from my grandmother after she passed that is being used as a buffet in the dining room. It’s exquisite! She spent months stripping off the old black paint that once adorned it. Now it’s the most beautiful, richly colored wood and it means the world to me because it was a true labor of love from my Grandma.

FURNISH ME!!!!!! After purchasing our home 2 years ago I’m just now starting to find my love for decorating. I purchased some basic things that were needed for the house but nothing that I can label my “greatest piece”. I’m learning though and I’m loving everything I’m buying now-a-days!!

I found a vintage buffet on craiglist and painted it! I LOVE it and it is definitely my fave piece of furniture that I own. It took awhile to convince my husband when I found it on craigslist because he is one of those men that don’t believe in painting wood:)

Tracey says
FURNISH ME, please! Hmm… That’s a tough one. It’s probably a toss up between these great antique shelves that I got at a flea market and a church pew that we scored for free. My hubby cut the latter in half and we use it as a bench for the dining room table!

We don’t have really any piece that I’m absolutely in love with…so I’m totally digging the idea of getting some new furniture!
Kara Joy says
“FURNISH ME!”
Having to answer this question made me realize that we DON’T have any furniture pieces that I would cry if we replaced them. Our bed was a splurge and I like it (and the fact that it has built in drawers), but when we stored it in a basement for a year I didn’t miss it. I greatly regret not asking for my grandparents’ wrought iron bed when they cleaned out their house. I was in college and didn’t even think of it, but I’d always loved it.
So, basically, I’d love to win this prize.

I have an old wood pew that my grandfather rescued from a church in his little Minnesota town that was being transformed into a restaurant. It lived in the mudroom at my grandparents farmhouse for years, and I took it with me when my grandmother sold the place after my grandfather passed away. It need a little TLC, but it sits proudly in my home and reminds me of my dear grandfather every day.
