With Halloween finally upon us we’re wondering if you guys plan to host parties, attend them, attend them in costume or just answer the door and shove fistfulls of Butterfingers at the three-foot-tall ghosts and goblins ringing your bell. Something about Halloween is especially intriguing to us this year. Maybe because it’s sort of a before and after fest when it comes to your house (our porch and our living room had a little spooky makeover) and even when it comes to yourself (if you’re dressing up there’s a definite transformation that takes place). So tell us all about who or what you’ll be for the night (any Jon & Kate Plus 8s? Or how about those cute kids from the movie Juno?) along with what kind of parties you’re hosting or attending, and most of all, what your kiddos (four-legged or two) are dressing up as. There have been many (many) requests for photos of Burger in his costume so without further ado we present to you… Hamburger the hot dog:
We picked up this little ditty to the tune of $9.99 at Target. And two out of three Petersiks were super excited about the purchase.
If Burger had his way he’d wear it like this…

My hubby and I finally are in town at the same time at Halloween (our first in 4 years of marriage) and I made matching costumes…he’s going to be an Operation game (pretty easy with a box, yellow and black spray paint, flesh colored acrylic paint, Sculpey for the pieces, and a printer…and kitchen tongs in hand!) and I’m going to be the game of Twister (bright turtleneck and tights, and a Twister towel I had on hand wrapped around a few times and held up by rainbow suspenders I inherited from my mom’s fashion sense from the 1970s)…and we’re going to a party with our work (Army) friends…should be amusing!

We arent dressing up this year, but here are some pictures of our dogs’ costumes!

I love burger’s outfit, though I thing he would look even better as a taco. My dog was batman last year, at 15 years old he was not too excited about but had a good time anyway. Unfortunately he passed away earlier this year :( and won’t have to put up with my costume concoction anymore – now he is forever a little beagle angel.

Not sure what we’re going to be yet, but our kitten, Bert is going as a goldfish! He gets in the shower with us every single morning, so we think he was a goldfish in a previous life…or at least wishes he was.
He actually just made his TV debut on the Martha Stewart show in his (handmade)costume! Check it out! (skip to 3:10 to see us)

So cute! Thanks for all the links and descriptions about what you guys (and your pets) will be tomorrow. Sounds like we have a lot of hysterical readers (and possibly pissed off pets) and we wish you all a very happy Halloween!

We are taking our 10-month-old daughter trick-or-treating for UNICEF. We would feel kind of guilty if we used her to get tons of candy. LOL Besides, isn’t that what the day-after-Halloween candy sales are for?
As for a party, we are having a pumpkin-shaped pepperoni pizza and having our daughter’s best buddy, also 10 months, and his mom over. After the kids go down for a nap, it’s scary movie time!

Hahahahaha! I love it! Burger looks too cute all hot dogged up :) Gus lucked out this year – only got one costume for him this year (in contrast to the normal 3 or 4 of years past ;)

We’re renovating our new house, and the concrete front walkway is so old and chipped away that I’m scared the trick-or-treaters will hurt themselves! Any ideas for a fun & spooky barricade we can place the candy bowl in front of?
YoungHouseLove says
Hey J,
Haha, that’s a pretty creative solution. How about sitting a skeleton or some sort of stuffed “creature” (a ghost? an evil scarecrow?) on a chair at the front of the walkway with a bowl of candy and a sign that says “Halt, take your treat and enjoy!” or something? That or you could dress up like a scary creature of some sort and sit perfectly still with a bowl of candy and scare the dickens out of kids when they reach into the bowl by moving and groaning or something!

Love Burger’s costume. Too cute!! We have a mini dachshund, but he’d just try to rip it off. Maybe when he’s out of his puppy phase he’ll be mature enough to handle wearing a costume.

We are handing out candy with our neighbors and drinking some beers :)
And our dog is going to be a shark!

We’re walking in the American Cancer Society walk today, then coming home for a soup buffet with our team. No dressing up for us. Our pooch already had his “howl”aween party last week. He posted a link to his photo in Burger’s blog.

oh you guys are super cute! ha! love it.
my boyfriend and I went to a fun party last night and I think we’re going to see haunted caves in Stillwater, MN tonight!

I love Burger’s costume. So cute!
This year I made a taco costume for my chihuahua mix, Whiskey. I put a tutorial up on my blog, so when you get a chance take a look:
http://smallhomebigstart.blogspot.com/2009/10/tutorial-dog-taco-costume.html
We’re heading out to a friend’s housewarming/Halloween party, and I’m going as a fortune teller for all the kiddies, but I’m pretty sure that Whiskey is going to be the one to steal the show.
Have a great Halloween!

We just bought a house last winter and our basement has an incredible bar that looks like it’s straight out of 1962… so we’re throwing a Mad Men-themed party with all our friends. My wife found a great Betty Draper dress on Etsy.com and stole an old suit from my father. We’ll be serving Old Fashioned drinks and tried to find candy cigarettes (we couldn’t get the order in early enough). We’ll have pictures up on our blog (www.sandpail.blogspot.com) before the end of the weekend.

Oh…poor Burger…don’t tell him about all the folks laughing, or if you do, tell him we’re laughing WITH him, not AT him!
This year my 8 & 12 yo sons are going to be an Evil Dentist and his Evil Assistant…and my Sheltie is going to be the patient! I also posted a Halloween blast from the past entry, and noticed that those hand made costumes tend to get worn year after year – yay! for recycling!

That’s a great choice for Burger’s Target costume! I used to work at Target HQ in Minneapolis in the pet’s department. I helped source THAT costume(among other ridiculous yet functional apparel)!!! Our new little mutt donned the Target squirrel option this year. And I already picked up the Santa hat and beard combo that I helped source too. Hope you had a great Halloween!
YoungHouseLove says
No way Erica! Thanks so much for selecting such a delectable Halloween option for Burger. I’m sure he doesn’t appreciate it one bit, but we do!

Love the pics of your dog! Too cute! We have 2 six month old chi’s. We bought a dragon costume and a bumblebee costume for them, but they HATED them! Haha!

My boyfriend’s little sister saw Julie & Julia earlier in the year, and decided to go as Julia Childs for Halloween. She was so cute! Too bad most people had no idea who she was and thought she was a “just” a cook or something. We didn’t stay out long since she had 4 (yes, FOUR) soccer games earlier in the day and was tired. It was still lots of fun, though. I hope you two enjoyed yourselves!
P.S. Burger’s costume is/was too cute! If I ever decide to do something similar with my rather large and fluffy cat, I’ll be sure to send you the results!
Courtney says
Our little dog was a hot dog too!! Like Burger, she would rather eat a hot dog than wear one! Here is a link to a pic of her: http://redheadscraftmorefun.blogspot.com/2009/11/halloween-hot-dog.html Happy Halloween! PS: Love the blog!!

My brother and sis-in-law hosted a fab Halloween Party – loads of alcoholic drinks and much laughing at costumes – leprechaun, robin hood, Dennis the Menace, Dorothy from Wizard of Oz etc……Great, great night but what a hangover on Sunday.
Erica says
Hi Sherry,
You’re going to think I’m a total whacko for asking this…but when you guys travel with Burger and you’re out for the day, do you ever worry that someone will steal him from your room? My husband and I have an 8 month old Tibetan Spaniel puppy and he’s quickly become the apple of our eyes.
This coming weekend is our 1 year wedding anniversary and we’d like to do a quick weekend getaway. We’d like to bring Ernie with us, but I have all of these bad thoughts about the housekeeper or one of the hotel employees (who have key access to the rooms) stealing our little guy. We get so many compliments on him and of course, as parents we’re biased but we think he’s the cutest puppy ever and I’m so afraid that someone will steal him! (Has this dog turned me into a crazy person or what??) I would be more than devastated if anything happened to him.

Hey Erica,
Here’s a video all about how we travel with little Burger. One of the tips that works for us is to leave the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door, which prohibits housekeeping and other service people from entering the room while you’re away (thereby calming your nerves along with your pooches). Hope it helps!

Erica says
PS. I just wanted to add that Ernie is fully potty trained and he only barks when someone knocks at the door. We plan on following your advice of leaving the tv on so he has some background noise.

Since I am a dog parent, the closest I get to trick or treating is going to a charity Halloween Pet Parade. We walk around the block. At each corner there are people handing out treats for the dogs and candy for the people. My dog Blitzkrieg went as Balloon Boy http://condo-blues.blogspot.com/2009/10/blitzkriegs-balloon-boy-costume.html.

Hilarious! We have 2 chi-weenies and we love to dress them up for Halloween. They don’t love it as much but they pose for the pictures!
