When it comes to showcasing photos and prints around the house, figuring out how to hang them doesn’t have to hurt your brain. We grabbed our video camera and walked from room to room to break down some of the frame arrangements that are living it up here at Casa Petersik. Hope it helps you master the frame game! Watch below or here on YouTube.
But what are framing arrangements if you have nothing to hang? Here are a few of our favorite DIY art ideas along with a fun pooch project for anyone with a willing four-legged participant. You can also find a slew of other cheap & easy suggestions on our How To page under the “Artsy Ideas” header. Happy creating!

Another quick question about the frame arrangement above your couch… are the photos real pictures of ones you took or are they different pictures/prints you found. I have always struggled to do a frame arrangement because I felt the photos had to be significant to each other in some manner.
Also.. recreated the “magazine P” that you showed us how to do, my “R” is a bit blurred so I may have to try again!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Katie,
They’re photos we took and had CVS print out in black and white for a few cents each. We dropped a white “mat” behind them and called it a day. So easy- plus they’re meaningful! Here’s a post all about it. Hope it helps!

Hi – Do you happen to remember the name of the target frames you use for the asymmetrical arrangement? Online – the very greatly in price from their “Gallery Fame” collection on the high-end.. to others.. and with out touching the frame I am worried about the quality on the low end.
Thanks!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Jeff,
We got them in store instead of online and they probably varied from $9 to $15- maybe $20 at the most. They definitely look great and do the trick. Hope it helps!

I am wanting to create an asymmetrical design on one of my walls. It looks like all the frames you guys used to create yours are about the same thickness. Do you think they need to sit the same or a very similar distance from the wall or could some sit out further than others? I hope this makes sense! Thanks in advance.
Belinda :)
YoungHouseLove says
Actually a lot of our frames were thicker, chunkier, or more delicate than each other so it’s just the white color that ties them all together! Definitely go for it even if you have frames that are of different thicknesses or depths. We’ve even seen gorgeous asymmetrical frame collages done with different colored frames (in that case usually the framed art is similar tone, either black & white or vivid & colorful to help tie everything together) but the beauty of such an informal arrangement is that nothing feels too perfect. Hope it helps!

I love this video! Having just hung about 7 pictures in various spots, my instincts were mostly validated — and in some cases, well-informed by this piece, I went back and MOVED the work around.
Thanks so much! :-)

I just wanted to let you both know I picked up a copy of BH&G 100 Ideas, Real Rooms today…… aaaaaaaaand right there, on page 28, is a picture of the sentimental framed keys Sherry made for John. I recognized it right off the bat since I just watched this video this past week. Congratulations on another magazine appearance!

I really liked this post because it fed into an idea that I’ve been cooking up for my own place. My husband and I live in a 2 bedroom condo in Northern Virginia and have started to think about starting a family in another year or so. We are unable to move anytime soon due to the tremendous drop in housing prices here. The trouble is, I am terrified of making a nursery and giving up our guest room. Do you think it would be possible to incorporate a sleeper sofa into a nursery (rather than a traditional rocker to nurse on) so that guests could use it and the baby could stay in mom and dad’s room for a night or so? I wish I had your creativity gene, Sherry!
YoungHouseLove says
Yes yes yes! I nurse waaaay more on the sofa bed in our office than in the chair in the nursery (since nighttime feedings always end up happening in bed since John brings Clara into the room for me). So that would be a super smart merging of rooms. We say go for it!

Sherry,
I found the cubby picture Alise was looking for at AllPosters.com or you can get it at Art.com.
It is called Provence by Camille Soulayrol. She also has similar ones with different color themes.
I hope this helps her.

Thanks for that info for Alise!

I loved your “symmetrical with a twist” display so much that I ran out and got all the frames I needed for my wedding wall display. But apparently I am not that great with scale, my frames are definitely too small. Would you please tell me the frame sizes so that I too can have such a glorious arrangement? Thanks!!!
YoungHouseLove says
Hey Vanessa,
All the frames are from Ikea and the small ones are 5 x 7, the second smallest ones are 8 x 10, the larger ones are 11 x15 and the big one in the middle is 15 x 19 (these are the openings of the frames, so obviously the chunky frame in the middle’s outside measurements are more like 19 x 23). Hope it helps!

Just watched this and it answered so many of my questions about how to structure different sorts of arrangements. Thanks for the tips. You guys never disappoint!

Hi! I loooove your frame arrangement above your couch! Just had a quick question…. are the photos 5×7 or 4×6 in a 8×10 frame?
Thanks,
Libby
YoungHouseLove says
They’re 4 x 6 photos with a large mat in 8 x 10 frames. Hope it helps!

Hi! I just stumbled upon your site last Friday and I’m so lovin it. Too bad there’s not enough time in the day to browse through all your awesome projects! You two are such generous people, sharing all your awesome creative ideas and devoting so much time in doing so.
I have a question– I love the asymmetrical way of hanging frames but i’m planning to do it on my dining area wall. I also wanted to buy a sideboard/buffet to put against that wall. (when i have the budget for it) Do you think that a symmetrical group of frames looks better above a sideboard? I see that you used the asymmetrical method on a blank wall with no piece of furniture.
I’m a new mommy as well and I haven’t spent time working on our one-year old house (the walls are still white and empty). I’ve spent too much time on mommy blogs. I’m glad i came across yours..I needed this boost of inspiration! Thanks much!

Good question! We actually think an asymmetric arrangement would look just as good so definitely go for it!

I’m thinking of doing an arrangement with frames and 3 shelves of varying widths (10, 14, 18 inches). Bad idea? Any advice on arranging? Any place you know of that I might find pictures of this done?
YoungHouseLove says
Sounds like fun! Maybe just google around for “staggered shelves” or “picture frames shelves” (click the “images” button to see a bunch of photos at once and scroll through them for inspiration). Good luck!

Thanks for the nifty tips and tricks! I came across your blog because I was searching for ideas on room remodeling. The little lady in our house just turned 2 and we’re planning a little room makeover for her. Out with the baby stuff and in with little girl whatnots! :) Your video gave us some ideas about how to display some of our most favorite photos. Thanks!!

LOVE your site and everything you have done to your homes!! I am completely hooked onto it… gosh cant work at work!!!
I have random Ikea frames which I need to paint black to get them go become cohesive… What kind of paint do you suggest??
YoungHouseLove says
I would spray paint them with high quality semi-gloss Rustoleum spray paint. Good luck!

Most of the pictures you have are black and white… how would you suggest using colored pictures?

Here’s a post with a big arrangement with lots of colorful art. Just play around and see what you like. Hope it helps!

I’m planning to hang a long, narrow vertical poster on a big wall and wanted to figure out an arrangement. This is really really helpful as I’m toying with shapes and arrangements. Thank you for talking through your thought process!

thank you thank you thank you for this! we have a million frames stacked on the floor in the bedroom and a ton of bare wall because we never can decide where to hang stuff.

Neat tips. Love the video too. A cute and easy way to digest info. I always had ‘frame fear’ and left tons of prints in my basement for years. Here to a new tackle!

Thanks SO much for all of your advice. I totally copied your paint color (BM Moonshine) and took a leap of faith using it in my living room down through my hallway. That being said, I was hoping you could give me a little advice with my living room: I have a small ranch house with a *tiny* living room that we use every day (no den or basement yet!). It is the first room you walk into when you enter the house. There is a large picture window on the front wall (almost the whole wall) that I was thinking of putting an accent chair and small table in front of. The wall that is next to that has the fireplace with our huge tv (thanks to hubby) but a decent amount of room on either side that is just blank. There is a small wall across from the window that is blank, as well as the small wall behind the couch (the couch is floating in the room…a loveseat + chaise). I am lost with how to decorate the walls. I do have a framed picture I am in love with (approx 23X20) to use, but that’s it. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated, as I LOVE your style! :)
YoungHouseLove says
I would just check out places like local art shops, Etsy, art.com and other places with art and see what you like. Just collect it over time to save money – and you can also hang a mirror since those reflect light and make a room feel bigger!

Your website has really inspired me to start my own blog, so thank you! Just like you I find great satisfaction in designing on a budget! Your video tutorial is great, really shows your humour and personality! I’ve done a asymmetrical arrangement in my living room… mostly of our photos, but the frames are mismatched. After watching your tutorial, I’m thinking ours would look much better with white frames. (they could still be mismatched frames, of course!).
Thanks for blogging!

Hey Sherry, Any idea on a rough estimate as to what size those three frames are in the last shot? I think you called it left-flushed. I have a similar open space and I’m having trouble finding three size frames that work.
YoungHouseLove says
I would guess the little one’s 8 x 10, the middle one is 11 x 17, and the large one is 30 x 24. They’re all from Ikea I think. Hope it helps!
