Green aventurine is a special type of quartz that’s characterized by sparkling metal fragments embedded within it. It’s found in a variety of colors, but green is the most common (and my personal favorite!). Like its color might indicate, it’s thought to be the luckiest gemstone and is said to bring prosperity and good fortune to those who hold it. I definitely love decorating my shelves and tabletops with it. The subtle green color is just gorgeous.
What is Green Aventurine?
Aventurine is a form of quartz that’s characterized by mineral inclusions that give the crystal a shimmering or glistening appearance. This effect is called “aventurescence.” Different kinds of mineral impurities produce different shades of aventurine.
Green is the most common color and it’s produced when fuchsite particles become trapped in the quartz as it forms. It can also be red, blue, purple, gray, yellow, and more. Today, the majority of green aventurine comes from India.

What is Green Aventurine’s Meaning?
Green Aventurine is considered the luckiest crystal. It’s sometimes called the “Stone of Opportunity.” Many believe it has a variety of metaphysical or spiritual properties, most of which center around positivity, adventure, and good fortune. Some say it helps you get out of your comfort zone, seek new opportunities, and stay calm when faced with uncertainty. Different colors of aventurine are said to have different meanings, but green’s strong association with luck is easy to remember!
Crystal Properties
Aventurines are believed to have many meanings, but here are some of the properties most often associated with green aventurine:
- Luck and good fortune
- Prosperity and wealth
- Self-confidence
- Positivity and optimism
- Sense of adventure
- Settle nerves
What Is Green Aventurine Good For?
Aventurine has been used for centuries around the globe, largely for decorative purposes. It’s prized for its beautiful color and unique shimmering appearance, but also because it is relatively easy to carve. That makes it useful as jewelry and beads, as well as decorative objects, tools, and monuments. For example, Tibetans traditionally carve the eyes of status from aventurine because of its glittering quality. Carved aventurine artifacts have also been found in Ethopia dating back 2.5 million years ago! These days, it’s also used in landscaping, aquariums, and more.
Where to Place Green Aventurine In Your Home
I like to put my aventurine crystals just about anywhere that I can enjoy their sparkly appearance. But some choose to place it strategically in specific rooms of their home to better leverage its various meanings. Here are some ways to do that:
- Wear it as jewelry or keep in your purse to bring you good fortune
- Place it near valuables, like jewelry or your wallet, to invite more prosperity
- Use it in a home office or workspace to promote success
- Place it on a bedside table to end your day calmly and with gratitude
- Put it near makeup, coffee, or other parts of your morning routine to start your day with optimism
Green Aventurine vs Amazonite
Due to their similar coloring, green aventurine and amazonite are often confused or conflated. However, they are two different types of gemstones. Aventurine is a quartz, whereas amazonite is a feldspar. Aventurine is also found in many colors, but amazonite is always a shade of green. While sometimes their greens can be similar, the best way to tell them apart is that aventurine is usually translucent and amazonite is always opaque, as you can see in the two asteroids below:
Amazonite also does not have the glittering flecks that are seen in aventurine. Instead, amazonite usually has white banding or stripes – sort of like veining.
Other Green Aventurine FAQs
Why Is It Called Aventurine?
Aventurine comes from the Italian phrase “a ventura” which means “by chance.” It was first used in the 18th century to describe a happy accident when Italian glassworkers dropped copper filings into molten glass. The resulting sparkle effect was dubbed aventurine glass (or goldstone). The name aventurine was later passed along the gemstone because of its similar shimmering appearance.
What Does Green Aventurine Symbolize?
Green aventurine is a symbol of luck and good fortune, just like its color suggests. It is also said to have a strong connection to nature and can help you feel more grounded to the environment.
How Do I Clean Green Aventurine?
Keep your aventurine looking its best by dusting it with a dry cloth. You can also use a damp cloth to polish it, but prolonged soaking in water is not recommended. Also avoid using household cleaners or chemicals that could damage the crystal structure. Like other quartz crystals, aventurine is relatively hard (6.5 – 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness) so it is fairly, but not totally, scratch-resistant.
How Do I Charge Green Aventurine?
I prefer to charge all of my crystals by placing them in moonlight, overnight during a full moon. For me, this is the easiest way to charge and cleanse every crystal I have in one evening. Alternatively, you can place it in sunlight for up to 30 minutes or hold it under running water for a minute or two.
Can Green Aventurine Go In Water?
Aventurine, like other quartz crystals, is safe to put in water. However, soaking it for long periods of time can change its appearance and damage its crystal structure. You may notice that the color darkens or looks dull if it’s soaked for too long. Like all crystals, it should not be soaked in salt water.
Can Green Aventurine Go In The Sun?
You should not leave aventurine in the sun for very long. Like other colorful quartzes, extended exposure to sunlight can fade your crystal’s color. So avoid displaying green aventurine near direct sunlight and, if you choose to charge your aventurine in the sun, don’t leave it out longer than 30 minutes.
Where To Buy Green Aventurine
I have a lot of places I like to purchase crystals (as well as in person in local crystal shops anywhere that I live or travel to), so here are a few online options for buying green aventurine:
