Allow me to share a few hints: y-e-l-l-o-w-d-o-o-r
Yup, I’m painting our front door the happiest of shades: rain boot yellow! That’s not the real name of the paint swatch that we settled on, I just think it’s the perfect way to describe the glossy sunny yellow that we chose.
I was hoping to share some after pics, but alas, this is real life and all the prep work took longer than I thought. Boo.
The good news is that I’m done with the drilling, the spackling, the sanding, and the deglossing. So all that general readying stuff is out of the way. And if all goes well I’ll be back with a ton of deets and photos of the entire took-longer-than-I-thought process as soon as the paint’s dry enough to photograph (the goal is sometime this afternoon).
Oh and in random yellow door news, guess what color we painted our first house’s front door in May of 2006?
Wait… why are you scrolling? You have to guess first…
… I wonder what color you’re going to guess…
… I’m just putting words here so you don’t see the answer before you can guess…
… words…

…ok, now you can scroll…
Yup, it was a very similar happy yellow color. And we loved it gobs more than the glossy black look that we later went with…
… and it was probably tied with the bold fire engine red door that we ended up with after a paint/hardware makeover here and a big porch makeover here.
For some strange reason we just couldn’t see the front door of our new house being any other color than bright sunny yellow, especially when we held up a ton of other swatches and felt nothing but blah. So yellow it is. Here’s hoping my little door makeover will help us build curb appeal momentum since there are about 500 other things we’d love to tackle outside. Especially since you can hardly see our door from the street these days thanks to the jungle that is our front yard. Le sigh.
Have you painted a front door four times in five years like me? Have you gone back to the first color you chose as if it were “the one”? Are you wondering why we only buy brick ranches with monkey grass and walls of shrubbery? I’m beginning to sense a pattern…

I didn’t get a chance read your blog yesterday and as soon as I clicked and it loaded I noticed the top header photo had a yellow door! Looks good! We have a brick ranch and I always thought that yellow clashed, but y’all make it look good!

Talk to me – I love your website! You guys are so much fun :) Door is awesome!! Wondering where you got your curtains they are so cool!

Ha. When the post said, “Guess what I’m up to?” and I looked at the pictures, I totally guessed you were adding house numbers. It didn’t even occur to me that all the doors in the pictures were yellow.

I painted our front door just the other day, and it’s a bright yellow as well! Yellow must be in – I used some of the same inspiration photos as you did. Our house is a light blue with a hint of gray and green, and I went with a yellow with a hint of green after much deliberation (originally I thought I wanted a chartreuse). It’s Martha Stewart’s Dusty Gold.
Cool!

We can’t paint the door of our condo, but I can’t wait to buy a house in the next few years and pick a unique door color! I love the trend of yellow doors these days. It’s much more fun and cheery, than the red trend. My sister wants to paint her door yellow too.

The door looks great! Did you paint the back of the door? If not, what color did you paint the side of the door (the same as the front, or the same as the back)? If not, do you think the front of the door needs to match the inside of the house, since it will show when the door is opened? Thank you!

The back of the door stayed white like our interior doors. As for the sides, they were maroon like the front so we just painted them yellow like the front. Looks good to us!

I just had to do a quick post on your bright, happy yellow front door — I love it! It adds so much personality to the front of your house and looks like it really pops when viewed from a distance. A great choice of color and Sherry, your paint job is fabulous! I definitely need better painting skills!

How funny – I also have (somewhere) the 4th photo down, house #120, in my overflowing folder of decorating/home improvement ideas. Love your taste!

Was there a post somewhere about someone’s front door that had a “hello” decal on it? I tried searching it and this post came up.
YoungHouseLove says
Hmm, I don’t recall that. Maybe try searching google images for “hello decal door” to see where it leads?

my ugly little ranch looks a lot like y’alls. same piddly columns on the front porch and all. mine is a lighter, peachy-er brick, though. black shudders. do you think that some colors could clash with brick? does that happen?
YoungHouseLove says
I bet it would look really nice! Good luck!

Hi,
Just brought my dream home and I want my front door to pop. I have gold brick. It is definately in the fall color family. Right now the door is a pumpkin orange and it looks good, but no pop. I plan on getting oil rubbed bronze for the fixtures. What do you think. Thanks.

Sounds gorgeous! You could also go for a more bold orange if you’d like (think a Hermes box, really crisp and bold). Hope it helps!

This is probably a silly question but when you paint the door yellow do you just paint the outside (the part seen from the street) or do you paint the inside yellow as well (the part seen in the house)? I am in love with the idea of the yellow door I’m just not sure if I should be doing the entire thing yellow or not.
YoungHouseLove says
We kept the inside white and went yellow with the front, although you can also do the back the same bold color or even keep it wood if that’s what it currently is and you like that look inside.
